Outbound Service Quality at Wan Hai Lines

Ha Nam Khanh Giao,Bao Trung,Pham Quang Truong 한국유통과학회 2019 The Journal of Asian Finance, Economics and Busine Vol.6 No.1

Service quality is still a new concept to those who works in shipping lines services since it has not been identified as a mandatory factor to increase competitiveness. Most carriers are currently offering services at the same level of price, transit time, equipment, etc. Thus offering a high quality service is the best way for a carrier to differentiate itself from its competitors in the market. The research aims to conduct an assessment on service quality at Wan Hai Lines (WHL) outbound services based on the SERVQUAL model, form of dimension-bydimension analysis. This study was based on a survey of 135 people. The outcome is the service quality of WHL outbound services can be identified by three dimension(s): Empathy and Responsiveness, Assurance, and Reliability. It would help management to have an overall picture about the current service quality, and to find solutions to improve service quality following the recommendations. WHL managers need to recognize that “Reliability” has the strongest influence on customers’ expectations, then come “Empathy and Responsiveness” and “Assurance”. Therefore, board of managers should spend time looking carefully at each of the three dimensions, especially for the biggest gap between perceptions and expectations of three dimensions as well. Then the recommendations were raised.

Exploring Productivity of Concrete Truck for Multistory Building Projects Using Discrete Event Simulation

Ha Duy Khanh,김수영 대한토목학회 2020 KSCE JOURNAL OF CIVIL ENGINEERING Vol.24 No.12

Concrete pouring activity is essential for the schedule and quality of the structural work construction. In practice, the process of concrete pouring is frequently congested and interrupted due to many unforeseeable reasons. The primary purpose of this study is to explore the productivity of concrete trucks for multistory building projects. The interview technique and work sampling method have been employed to collect the necessary data. Based on the literature review and experts' opinions, twenty-five factors affecting the productivity of pouring concrete have been found and discussed. Among them, there are seven factors identified as different from previous studies. Through two case studies of the hospital project, the actual average productivity of one concrete truck used to pour concrete into columns and walls is 0.184 m3/min by using a truck-mounted pump and 0.087 m3/min by using a tower crane. These productivities have been then determined based on discrete event simulation (DES). The simulation results indicated that the simulated productivity is higher than the actual productivity of approximately 16% and 13% for truck-mounted pump and tower crane, respectively. It is concluded that DES is a handy simulation tool for construction operations before the period of implementation. Based on the relationship between events of the process of concrete pouring, two relevant solutions have been proposed to enhance the productivity of concrete trucks. The results of this study may help practitioners manage the concreting activities in their projects with higher productivity.

      • Barriers of Last Planner System: A Survey in Vietnam Construction Industry

Khanh, Ha Duy,Kim, Soo Yong Korea Institute of Construction Engineering and Ma 2013 Journal of construction engineering and project ma Vol.3 No.4

Construction industry is overwhelmed by delay and often has suffered cost and time overrun. In this context, Last Planner System (LPS) has been considered as a very useful tool for the management of the construction process. Many previous studies have reported its effectiveness in construction performance. This study aims to evaluate the level of importance of the Last Planner processes in the Vietnam construction industry (VCI), and analyze the existing barriers when implementing these processes in construction management. These barriers were collected based on previous studies from International Group for Lean Construction (IGLC). A survey was carried out through questionnaire. The respondents are been experienced people in construction project management. There are four processes of LPS that were investigated including master schedule, phase schedule, lookahead plan, and weekly work plan. The results showed that master schedule is the most important item when performing a construction project in the VCI. The highest degree of agreement belongs to 'owner - contractor' pair with 77.1% importance indices; whereas the lowest belongs to 'consultants - contractors' pair with 63.8% importance indices. Eventually, three barrier factors were extracted from factor analysis technique with 62.2% of variance explained.

Determining Labor Productivity Diagram in High-Rise Building using Straight-Line Model

Ha Duy Khanh,김수용 대한토목학회 2014 KSCE JOURNAL OF CIVIL ENGINEERING Vol.18 No.4

Formwork setting, rebar fabrication/ installation, and concrete casting are often repetitive in high-rise building projects. In thebeginning, this paper has examined four design characteristics of high-rise building to find out the overall properties of surveyedpopulation. Later, the paper has described how straight-line models are developed and applied to estimate labor productivity in floorto-floor of high-rise building projects, and then has determined average labor productivity diagrams for three activities as mentionedabove. A survey was carried out through a structured questionnaire method. The respondents are been experienced people inconstruction and management of high-rise projects. The results have shown that the learning rate for each straight-line model isapproximately 0.9. The hypothesis about critical floor, which labor productivity of floors above this floor is probably fixed orconstant, is quite adequate. The position of critical floor for formwork activity is identified to be approximately 23% of all typicalfloors, and approximately 23% and 19% for rebar activity and concrete activity respectively. The validity of the proposed diagramshas tested by using a realistic case study. The findings of analysis show that the Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE) isapproximately 5%, and R-squared is greater than 80%.

Evaluating Impact of Waste Factors on Project Performance Cost in Vietnam

Ha Duy Khanh,김수영 대한토목학회 2014 KSCE JOURNAL OF CIVIL ENGINEERING Vol.18 No.7

Non value-adding activities, also known as wastes, have not been paid much attention in the current construction management. Previous studies have shown that significant amounts of project values were lost due to these wastes. This study mainly aims toexamine the effect of waste factors on project performance cost. A survey was carried out through a structured questionnaire. Therespondents are been experienced people in construction and management of building projects. The results of factor analysis showedthat there are five principal components extracted with 56.7% of variance explained for all waste factors in construction projects. Themean value of increased project cost due to these wastes is approximately 9.36% of total project cost. An artificial neural networkmodel was developed to estimate the impact of waste factors on project performance cost. The results of analysis showed that thedifference between predicted value and actual value is quite small. The Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE) is 1.35%, and theR-squared index is 91.1%. Based on elasticity test, five main waste factors were also discovered in this study. A comparison betweensome selected countries was then performed to gain a general view about waste problem in construction.

      • Practitioners' Perception on Relationship between Production Planning and Waste Occurrence in Construction Projects

Khanh, Ha Duy,Kim, Soo Yong Korea Institute of Construction Engineering and Ma 2014 Journal of construction engineering and project ma Vol.4 No.3

Construction management has been suffering from many problems, which need to be solved or better understood. Most of construction projects have not achieved efficiency as expected. In this context, waste was also considered as a problem of efficiency decrease, and poor production planning was considered as a cause for waste. This study was conducted on the basis of waste concepts and production planning processes based on the philosophies of Lean Construction. A survey to find out the relationship between them was carried out through questionnaire, which was answered by experienced people in construction projects. The results have shown that frequency of wastes occurrence is quite high, and production planning processes are superficially performed in construction phase. There is a significant negative relationship between production planning and waste occurrence (r = -0.262). Weekly Work Plan (WWP) is the most dominant plan for waste control with seventeen in total of nineteen waste factors, and phase plan is the most dominant plan for two remaining waste factors. A case study was adopted to validate the relationship between production planning and waste occurrence. The results showed that the better the project was planned, the fewer the waste would occur on construction sites.

A Survey on Production Planning System in Construction Projects Based on Last Planner System

Ha Duy Khanh,김수용 대한토목학회 2016 KSCE JOURNAL OF CIVIL ENGINEERING Vol.20 No.1

Production planning has a critical role in obtaining project success through improving the reliability of workflow. Previous studies have shown the effectiveness of production planning in construction projects. This study aims to examine the current practice of production planning system in Vietnam Construction Industry (VCI) based on the Last Planner System (LPS). An assessment framework for production planning procedures has been employed according to the previous studies. Questionnaire survey, case study and expert survey were employed in this study. The results of analysis have indicated that most of production planning procedures at team workshop step and weekly work plan step in VCI are well performed; whereas most of procedures at lookahead plan step are superficially performed. Master schedule and weekly work plan are the most used plans when executing a construction project. Tool for constraints analysis and tool for measurement of percent plan completed are highly employed. ‘Low understanding of the concepts of LPS’ and ‘language and culture issues’ are the largest and smallest barriers respectively. ‘Indirect cost savings’ is the most beneficial factor if the present barriers are removed. This study then proposed some relevant solutions to enhance the performance of production planning processes in VCI.
