        Nitric oxide alleviates lead toxicity by inhibiting lead translocation and regulating root growth in watermelon seedlings

        Lead (Pb) is one of the most abundant toxic heavy metals, which have a serious impact on the growth and yield of crop plants. Nitric oxide (NO) is a natural signaling molecule that regulates the growth and productivity of plants. Here, exogenous NOwas found to enhance Pb tolerance in watermelon, which resulted in more Pb restriction in roots and less up-translocatedPb to aerial parts. Pb stress, however, led to an increase in shoot dry weight, root biomass, root relative water content, leafmalondialdehyde (MDA) content, and the total soluble protein content in leaves and roots. By contrast, shoot height andfresh weight, leaf biomass, and root MDA content were decreased under Pb stress. NO treatments alleviated Pb toxicity bydecreasing Pb translocation, enhancing root growth (elongation and biomass), inducing antioxidant enzymes activities, andreducing root MDA contents in watermelon seedlings. In conclusion, our results provide useful insights into the mechanismof Pb tolerance in cucurbit crops and information for the cultivation management of watermelon in the presence of thisheavy metal (Pb).

        How Vegetation Spatially Alters the Response of Precipitation and Air Temperature? Evidence from Pakistan

        Precipitation, air temperature and Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) data of 32 sites for a period of 1983 to till date in Pakistan were collected with the objective of studying the effects of vegetation on precipitation and air temperature in Pakistan. Spatial trends were assessed for NDVI, precipitation and air temperature (maximum and minimum). Increasing trends were observed at 18, 20, 24 and 26 number of monitoring stations for NDVI, precipitation and maximum and minimum temperature respectively. The trends of NDVI were compared with the trends of precipitation and maximum and minimum temperature in hilly and urban areas. NDVI and precipitation showed parallel trends in hilly areas at 64% of the monitoring stations. Whereas, only 53% of the stations displayed parallel trends in urban areas. 71% of the stations showed opposite NDVI and maximum temperature trends and 79% of the stations showed opposite NDVI and minimum temperature trends in hilly areas. However, in urban areas only 47% and 41% of the stations showed opposite trends of NDVI and maximum temperature and NDVI and minimum temperature respectively. Pearson’s correlation coefficients were calculated to determine the effects of vegetation on precipitation and air temperature (maximum and minimum) in hilly and urban areas. The results showed that there exists positive relationship between NDVI and precipitation and negative relationship between NDVI and temperature (maximum and minimum) in most of the hilly areas. However, in urban areas, the positive relationship between NDVI and precipitation exists only in 47% of the stations and negative relationships between NDVI and maximum temperature and between NDVI and minimum temperature exist only in 47% and 41% of the stations respectively. Results of the current study suggest afforestation practices at country level to reduce climate change effects.

        The Impact of Ethical Leadership on Employees Turnover Intention: An Empirical Study of the Banking Sector in Malaysia

        The purpose of this paper is to investigate the influence of ethical leadership in determining the organizations’ individual-type ethical climate (self-interest, friendship, and personal morality ethical climate) in reducing employee turnover intention. It seeks to identify the role of individual-type climate in mediating the association between ethical leadership and employee turnover intention. Moreover, the moderation effect of emotional exhaustion among employees on the relationship between ethical leadership and turnover intention has been researched to establish the ethical degree of leadership. Using a sample of 260 questionnaires from employees working full-time in the banking sector, the results were analyzed in PLS-SEM. The results of the social exchange theory indicated that ethical leadership is vital in shaping the workplace’s individual-type ethical climate and reducing employees’ turnover intention. The findings demonstrate that the relationship between ethical leadership and turnover intention is mediated by an individual-type ethical climate, which means that employees in a positive ethical climate do not wish to leave immediately. Furthermore, emotional exhaustion was found to moderate the association between ethical leadership and employees’ turnover intention under high emotional exhaustion, where low ethical leadership is experienced, reporting higher levels of turnover intention.
