Numerical Study on the Influence of the Width of the SBM Disc Cutter on Rock Breaking

        Yiqiang Kang,Yang-shuai Shu,Li-yun Yang,Ren-shu Yang,Yi-chuan Xu,Zheng Xie,Ke-yao Ren 대한토목학회 2023 KSCE Journal of Civil Engineering Vol.27 No.9

The study of the rock-breaking pattern of shaft boring machine (SBM) cutters is the basis for cutter design. In order to reveal the influence of the cutter blade width on the rock-breaking effect, this study established a discrete-continuous coupled rock mass numerical model. By setting different blade widths and types, the variation patterns of cutter forces, rock-breaking area, and specific energy with the blade width were revealed. The influence of the blade type on the breaking coefficient was further quantified according to the fractal dimension. The results show that under the cutting action, the rock mass can be divided into dense core, fractured zone, and elastic deformation zone, with the fractured zones mainly located on the lower side of the cutter's central axis. As the width of the cutter increases, the cutter penetration force and side force increase linearly with the increase in blade width, the breaking area increases and then tends to remain constant, the specific energy decreases first and then increases, and the rock fragmentation factor increases linearly. After scaling the width of the flat blade up to 18 mm and the arc blade to 24 mm, further increase in the blade width does not improve the breaking efficiency but only results in a smaller slag granularity.

      • Recent development of biotin conjugation in biological imaging, sensing, and target delivery

        Ren, Wen Xiu,Han, Jiyou,Uhm, Soojin,Jang, Yu Jin,Kang, Chulhun,Kim, Jong-Hoon,Kim, Jong Seung The Royal Society of Chemistry 2015 Chemical communications Vol.51 No.52

<P>Despite encouraging results from preliminary studies of anticancer therapies, the lack of tumor specificity remains an important issue in the modern pharmaceutical industry. New findings indicate that biotin or biotin-conjugates could be favorably assimilated by tumor cells that over-express biotin-selective transporters. Furthermore, biotin can form stable complexes with avidin and its bacterial counterpart streptavidin. The strong bridging between avidin and biotin moieties on other molecules is a proven adaptable tool with broad biological applications. Under these circumstances, a biotin moiety is certainly an attractive choice for live-cell imaging, biosensing, and target delivery.</P> <P>Graphic Abstract</P><P>Biotin is a promising targeting unit for carcinoma cell lines and the avidin–biotin technology is an exceedingly flexible tool for pretargeting and vector targeting. • Long-term Efficacy of Microwave Hyperthermia Combined with Chemoradiotherapy in Treatment of Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma with Cervical Lymph Node Metastases

Kang, Min,Liu, Wen-Qi,Qin, Yu-Tao,Wei, Zhu-Xin,Wang, Ren-Sheng Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2013 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.14 No.12

Objective: The long-term efficacy of microwave hyperthermia combined with chemoradiotherapy in treating nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) with metastatic foci in cervical lymph nodes was evaluated. Methods: A total of 154 cases of N2 or N3 stage NPC were randomized into two groups: hyperthermia group (76 cases) and control group (78 cases). Both received cisplatin chemotherapy and radiotherapy. In addition, the hyperthermia group further received microwave hyperthermia to the metastatic cervical nodes with different patterns (before or after radiotherapy), heating temperatures (T90< $43^{\circ}C$ and $T90{\geq}43^{\circ}C$) and hyperthermia episodes (< 4 times, 4-10 times and > 10 times). Results: The 3-month and 5-year complete response (CR) rates of cervical lymph nodes in the hyperthermia group were significantly higher than those in the control group. The 5-year disease-free survival (DFS) rate and the 3-year / 5-year overall survival rate in the hyperthermia group were also significantly higher. There was no significant difference in 5-year metastatic rates. In the hyperthermia group, the 3-month and 5-year CR rates of T90< $43^{\circ}C$ treatment were significantly lower than with $T90{\geq}43^{\circ}C$ treatment. The CR rate was highest when the hyperthermia was performed 4-10 times. There were no significant differences in 3-month and 5-year CR rates between hyperthermia before or after radiotherapy treatment. Conclusion: Microwave hyperthermia combined with chemoradiotherapy can increase local control, DFS and 3, 5-year overall survival rates of patients with N2 ~ N3 stage NPC. The heating temperature should be over $43^{\circ}C$ with hyperthermia repeated 4-10 times.

      • Selective Molecular Separation on Ti3C2T<i>x</i>–Graphene Oxide Membranes during Pressure-Driven Filtration: Comparison with Graphene Oxide and MXenes

        Kang, Kyoung Min,Kim, Dae Woo,Ren, Chang E.,Cho, Kyeong Min,Kim, Seon Joon,Choi, Jung Hoon,Nam, Yoon Tae,Gogotsi, Yury,Jung, Hee-Tae American Chemical Society 2017 ACS APPLIED MATERIALS & INTERFACES Vol.9 No.51

<P>In this work, we prepared 90 nm thick Ti3C2Tx-graphene oxide (GO) membranes laminated on a porous support by mixing GO with Ti3C2Tx. This process was chosen to prevent the penetration of target molecules through inter-edge defects or voids with poor packing. The lattice period of the prepared membrane was 14.28 angstrom, as being swelled with water, resulting in an effective interlayer spacing of around 5 angstrom, which corresponds to two layers of water molecules. The composite membranes effectively rejected dye molecules with hydrated radii above 5 angstrom, as well as positively charged dye molecules, during pressure-driven filtration at bar. Rejection rates were 68% for methyl red, 99.5% for methylene blue, 93.5% for rose Bengal, and 100% for brilliant blue (hydrated radii of 4.87, 5.04, 5.88, and 7.98 angstrom, respectively). Additionally, the rejections of composite membrane were compared with GO membrane and Ti3C2Tx membrane.</P>

Persistent infection of a gammaherpesvirus in the central nervous system

        Kang, Hye-Ri,Cho, Hye-Jeong,Kim, Sungbum,Song, In Ho,Lee, Tae Sup,Hwang, Seungmin,Sun, Ren,Song, Moon Jung Elsevier 2012 Virology Vol.423 No.1

<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>Human gammaherpesvirus infections of the central nervous system (CNS) have been linked to various neurological diseases. Murine gammaherpesvirus 68 (MHV-68), genetically related and biologically similar to human gammaherpesviruses, infects the CNS in laboratory mice. However, viral persistency of MHV-68 has not been studied following CNS infection. In this study, we undertook the noninvasive bioluminescence imaging of a recombinant MHV-68 expressing the firefly luciferase (M3FL) to monitor virus progression after CNS infection. The M3FL virus inoculated in the brain systemically spread to the abdominal area in bioluminescence imaging, which was further confirmed by detection of viral genome and transcripts. The disseminated wild-type virus established latency in the spleen. Moreover, the treatment of the infected mice with CsA induced reactivation of latent MHV-68 from the brain and the spleen. Our results suggest that MHV-68 may persist both inside and outside the CNS once it gains access to the CNS.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P><P>► Noninvasive bioluminescence imaging of MHV-68 inoculated into the CNS. ► MHV-68 replicates in the brain and is systemically disseminated into the organs. ► Disseminated MHV-68 subsequently establishes latency in the spleen. ► Immunosuppression induces reactivation of MHV-68 from the brain and the spleen. ► MHV-68 may persist inside and outside of the brain once it gains access to the CNS.</P>

The Effects of Swiping Orientation on Preference and Willingness to Pay: The Interaction Between Touch Interface and Need-For-Touch

Ren, Han,Kang, Hyunmin,Ryu, Soohyun,Han, Kwanghee Korean Society for Emotion and Sensibility 2017 감성과학 Vol.20 No.4

The current study examined the influence of individual trait such as Need-For-Touch level (NFT; high vs. low) and swiping orientation (vertical vs. horizontal) on product evaluation and preference when using touch-screen interface like a smart phone and a tablet. Swiping is one of the most common interaction techniques for changing pages or searching some aligned pictures on touch-screen interface and it can be used in vertical and horizontal orientations. The experiment revealed a significant interaction between swiping orientation and NFT on preference, however the interaction on change-in-price of given products was only marginally significant. To be specific, high NFT participants reported higher preference for horizontal-swipe than vertical-swipe products, but such difference did not occur with low NFT participants. The current study illustrates the influence of swiping orientation and NFT on product preference and it provides a new perspective of design principles especially for online shopping websites.

        치과용 콤퍼머의 마찰·마멸거동

        임정일,강만석,김교한,김석삼 대한치과기재학회 1999 대한치과재료학회지 Vol.26 No.4

The friction and wear characteristics and wear mechanisms of dental compomers were investigated. Compomers such as Compoglass, F2000, Elan and Dyract AP were selected as specimens. Surface characteristics was examined by SEM and contents of glass fillers in specimens were determinated in order to analyze the effect of the fillers in fraction and wear characteristics. Ball on flat wear tester was used for a wear test. Friction and wear tests are carried out at room temperature. The friction coefficient of F2000 was quite high relatively, and the wear resistance of Compoglass and Dyract AP was better than that of F2000 and other specimens at the same experimental condition. The main wear mechanism is brittle fatigue of glass fillers, plastic flow and abrasive wear by crack propagation.

Meta-analysis of the effect of the overexpression of aquaporin family genes on the drought stress response

        Ren Jianhong,Yang Xiaoxiao,Ma Chunying,Wang Yuling,Zhao Juan,Kang Le 한국식물생명공학회 2021 Plant biotechnology reports Vol.15 No.2

Aquaporin (AQP) plays an essential role in water uptake and transport in plants, especially in the response to drought stress, which suggests the use of AQP expression to regulate plant water-use efciency. The overexpression of various AQP genes in a variety of plants has been reported, but inconsistencies in the experimental variables (such as stress type, gene donor, and recipient genus) and physiological parameters used to evaluate transgenic plants have made it difcult to elucidate the complex mechanisms by which AQPs afect drought tolerance. In this study, we performed a meta-analysis to categorize the responses of physiological parameters involved in drought tolerance in AQP-overexpressing plants and to evaluate the experimental variables that afect transgenic plant performance. The results of various studies indicated that two primary physiological processes (osmotic adjustment and alleviation of oxidative damage) were signifcantly afected by AQP overexpression. Among the examined experimental variables, treatment media (soil), stress type (no watering), stress duration (long-term), recipient genus (Nicotiana), donor species (Musaceae), and gene family (PIP2) had positive impacts on drought tolerance in transgenic plants. These fndings may help to guide future studies investigating the function of AQPs in the response of plants to water defcit stress.
