In this paper, we report the synthesis, growth and characterization of a new organic NLO single crystal of NMPMN (N0-[(Z)-(4-methylphenyl)methylidene]-4-nitrobenzohydrazide), for the first time. The single crystal was grown by slow evaporation method at room temperature. The cell dimensions obtained by single crystal XRD studies reveal that the crystal belongs to triclinic system. It was characterized by different techniques like powder XRD, UV, FTIR, TGA and DSC. The Knoop microhardness test was carried out to measure the mechanical strength of the crystal. Its refractive index was determined by the Brewster’s angle method. The laser damage threshold studies have been carried out for the crystal using a Q-switched Nd:YAG laser of ns pulses at a wavelength of 532 nm. The Kurtz Powder Second Harmonic Generation revealed that the SHG efficiency of the grown crystal is about 50% that of KDP and is found to be phase matchable. The intermolecular O-H···O, O-H···N and C-H···O hydrogen bonds and a π–π stacking interaction between the nitrobenzene and tolyl rings helps to create a delicate balance between the molecular and supramolecular charge transfer processes by creating a noncentrosymmetric structure.
Errata : Piscidenone and Piscidinol G, Two New Protolimonoids from Walsura piscidia
K. Balakrishna,E. Sukumar,J. D. Connolly 한국생약학회 2003 Natural Product Sciences Vol.9 No.4
Two new protolimonoids, piscidenone (1) and piscidinol G (2) were isolated from the leaves of the plant Walsura piscidia together with piscidinol A and C. The structurers were assigned based on spectral evidences (IR, HNMR, 13CNMR and MS).

In the present study, the alcoholic extract of Terminalia arjuna (TA) and Arjunolic acid (AA) were studied for its anti-asthmatic and anaphylactic activity. Treatment with TA (250 & 500 mg/kg) and AA (50&100 mg/kg) has shown significant protection against mast cell disruption in rats induced by compound 48/80. TA and AA also protected the guinea pig against histamine as well as acetylcholine induced bronchospasm. Both TA & AA exhibited better protection against histamine release than against acetylcholine release. Anti-asthmatic and anaphylactic activity may be possibly due to membrane stabilizing potential and inhibition of antigen induced histamine and acetylcholine release.

Breakwaters are the coastal structures constructed either perpendicular (shore connected) or parallel (detached) to the coast. The main function of breakwater is to create a tranquil medium on its leeside by reflecting the waves and also dissipating the wave energy arriving from seaside, resulting in ease of manoeuvrability to boats or ships to their berthing places. Different types of breakwaters are being used at present, such as rubble mound breakwater, vertical wall type breakwater and composite breakwater. The objective of this paper is to investigate reflection coefficients (Kr) and dissipation (loss) coefficients (Kl) for physical models of Quarter circle caisson breakwater of three different radii of 0.550 m, 0.575 m and 0.600 m with S/D ratio of 2.5 (S=spacing between perforations, D=diameter of perforations). The models were tested in the monochromatic wave flume of the department, for different incident wave heights (Hi), Wave periods (T) and water depths (d). It was observed that reflection coefficient increased with increase in the wave steepness (Hi/gT2) and decreased with increase in depth parameter (d/gT2) and hs/d (Height of structure including rubble base/depth of water). The loss coefficient decreased with increase in the wave steepness and increased with increase in depth parameter and hs/d.
Inhibitory Effect of Bacopa monniera on morphine Induced PharmacologicalEffects in Mice
T. Sumathi,K. Balakrishna,G. Veluchamy,S. Niranjali Devaraj 한국생약학회 2007 Natural Product Sciences Vol.13 No.1
effects of the alcoholic extract of Bacopa monniera (BMA) on morphine-induced pharmaco-logical activities were studied in mice. Oral administration of the extract (40 mg/kg) significantly inhibitedmorphine-induced analgesic tolerance, withdrawal symptoms, hyperactivity, reverse tolerance, Dopamine receptorsupersensitivity and apo-morphine-induced climbing behaviour in mice. The results of this study showed that, alcoholic extract of Bacopa monniera (BMA) exerted inhibitory efect against morphine-induced pharma-cological effects, suggesting that the extract could be useful in the treatment of morphine toxicity.KeywordsBacopa monniera, morphine toxicity, hyperactivity, analgesic tolerance, supersensitivity, climbingbehaviour
Phytochemical Investigation of the Leaves of Flaveria trinervia
S. Umadevi,G.P. Mohanta,K. Balakrishna,R. Manavalan 한국생약학회 2005 Natural Product Sciences Vol.11 No.1
Phytochemical study of the methanolic extract of Flaveria trinerviaisolation of three constituents characterised as 3,5,7,4tetrahydroxy-6-methoxy flavone (6-methoxy kaempferol),oleanolic acid and β-sitosterol-β-D-glucoside. The identities of the compounds were confirmed by the physicaland spectroscopic data and by comparison with authentic samples.
Anti-oxidant and Hepatoprotective Activities ofAlcoholic Extract of Terminalia arjuna
N. Anbalagan,Mallika M,Sara Kuruvilla,M.V.V. Prasad,A. Patra,K. Balakrishna 한국생약학회 2007 Natural Product Sciences Vol.13 No.2
extract of Terminalia arjuna [TA] was evaluated for its hepatoprotective activity againstcarbon tetrachloride (CCl4)-induced hepatic damage in rats. The hepatoprotective activity of TA was evaluated byglutamate pyruvate transaminase (SGPT), serum alkaline phosphatase (SALP). The serum levels of total proteins(TP), total albumins (TAL) and bilirubin (BILN) were also estimated. The histological studies were also carriedout to support the above parameters. Silymarin (SM) was used as standard drug. Administration of TA (250 and500 mg/kg/po) markedly prevented CCl4-induced elevation of levels of SGOT, SGPT, SALP, TP, TAL and BILN.These biochemical observations were supplemented by histopathological examination of liver sections. Alcoholicextract of TA also shown significant in-vitro free radical scavenging activity against 1, 1-diphenyl-2-picryltraditional use of this plant in the management of liver diseases.KeywordsTerminalia arjuna, In-vitro anti-oxidant, hepatoprotective, Liv 52, CCl4.
