A Comparison of Visual Occlusion Methods

Vol.30 No.5

Objective: This study compares two visual occlusion methods for the evaluation of in-vehicle interfaces. Background: Visual occlusion is a visual demand measuring technique which uses periodic vision/occlusion cycle to simulate a driving(or mobile) environment. It has been widely used for the evaluation of in-vehicle interfaces. There are two major implementation methods for this technique: (1) occlusion using PLATO(portable liquid crystal apparatus for tachistoscopic occlusion) goggles; (2) occlusion using a software application on a touchscreen device. Method: An experiment was conducted to examine the visual demand of an in-vehicle interface prototype using the goggle-based and the touchscreen-based occlusion methods. Address input and radio tuning tasks were evaluated in the experiment. Results: The results showed that, for the radio tuning task, there were no significant differences in total shutter open time and resumability ratio between the two occlusion conditions. However, it took longer for the participants to input addresses with the touchscreen-based occlusion. Conclusion & Application: The results suggest that touchscreen-based method could be used as an alternative to traditional, goggle-based visual occlusion especially in less demanding visual tasks such as radio tuning.

      • Developing a Quantitative Performance Model of the Use of Adaptive and Adaptable Menu Interfaces

Vol.2014 No.-

This study proposes a quantitative model to estimate the performance of using adaptive and adaptable menus. Modeling of the usage pattern of the target user using the device developed enables the quantitative evaluation of design alternatives without incorporating a usability test, which may not be possible due to the limitation of budget and/or time, confidentiality of the development project, and the unavailability of the participants representing the target population. This study develops quantitative models based on multiple linear regression analysis for traditional, adaptive, and adaptable menu interfaces. Modification of the interface by the user or the system itself may potentially have positive or negative effects on the usability. Models which represent both the perceptual/motor and cognitive performance of using adaptable and adaptive menus are developed by analyzing the quantitative results of an experiment involving users. The positive and negative effects such as shorter or longer menu selection time, more or less frequent number of errors, and increased or decreased ease of learning, can be defined as the benefits and the costs of the adaptation. The effectiveness of the different adaptation strategies adopted by a user and a system are evaluated by comparing their adaptation behavior with the optimal one suggested by the model.

        Jungchul Park,Seung-Kwon Hong,Jongbae Baek,Ingie Hong,Keun Won Lee,Woosub Han 대한인간공학회 2013 대한인간공학회 학술대회논문집 Vol.2013 No.10

Objective: The aim of this study is to develop a human error classification framework for chemical facilities and to apply it to major industrial accidents in chemical facilities in Korea. Background: Human errors can be classified with various criteria such as human information processing procedure by which the error was caused, explicit form of the error behaviour, and the consequence of the error. Method: Three human error classification criteria was chosen to classify human errors in major industrial accidents in chemical facilities: active vs. latent errors, external (behavior-based) classification, and internal (information processing-based) classification. Major industrial accidents which occurred in chemical facilities in Korea from 1997 to 2011 were analysed. Results: A total of 177 human errors were identified from 85 accident cases, and classified using the three criteria. Conclusion: Change in the number of human errors and frequencies of related facilities and industries were analysed. Application: The results provide insight on the pattern of human errors related to major industrial accidents in chemical facilities. In addition, they suggest that the accident investigation protocol is need to be improved.

      • Factors influencing the proprioceptive acuity of hazard button pressing

Vol.2015 No.10

Vol.28 No.3

Visual occlusion method is a visual demand measuring technique which uses periodic vision/occlusion cycle to simulate driving environment. It became one of the most popular techniques for the evaluation of in-vehicle interfaces due to its robustness and cost-effectiveness. However, it has a limitation in that the vision/occlusion cycle forces the user to use the IVIS at a predetermined pace, while a driver decides when to use the device on his/her own in actual driving. This paper proposes a user-driven visual occlusion method for measuring the visual demand of in-vehicle interfaces. An experiment was conducted to examine the visual demand of an in-vehicle interface prototype using both the existing (system-driven) occlusion method and the proposed (user-driven) one. Two in-vehicle tasks were evaluated: address input and radio tuning. The results showed that, for the radio tuning task, there were significant differences in total shutter open time and resumability ratio between the methods. The user-driven visual occlusion method not only allows a better representation of drivers' behavior, but it also seems to provide more information on the chunkability of a task.

Vol.36 No.6

Objective: The aim of this study is to review the existing studies on the user interface of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), especially focusing on the transitions of control authority. It also suggests some implications for the interface design. Background: With the advent of autonomous driving and the increasing adoption of ADAS, the importance of ergonomic design for the driver interface of ADAS is increasingly emphasized. Method: In this study, recent studies on the ADAS interface were reviewed in three aspects (the effect of automation level, the display design/evaluation, and control design/evaluation). Existing models of the allocation of control authority between driver and vehicle were also examined. Results: Various results have been obtained due to differences in experimental conditions and environments. However, in general, as the level of automation by ADAS increases, the workload decreases, while the level of situation awareness decreases and the response time increases. Motivations for the control authority transition and implications for the interface design are discussed. Conclusion: The interface that effectively monitors and presents the performance and conditions of the driver and the system is expected to provide assistance in various situations of authority transition. Application: The results of this study might help to explore, understand, and refine related research topics.
