        This essay explores cultural interactions between Korea and Japan by focusing on Korean translations of Japanese fiction in the early 1910s. It considers the translation of Japanese texts in colonial Korea as a contested field of culture where Japanese assimilationist ideologies were promoted and challenged. The translation of Japanese romance novels in the 1910s in the colonial newspaper, Maeil sinbo (The Daily News) is a striking example of the ideological function that imperial literature played in colonial Korea, demonstrating the uneven cultural exchange between the colony and the metropole. However, the ways native translators appropriated the original texts, while negotiating the colonial forces around them, deserve our attention for the embodiment of their political agency, reflecting native interests and cultural sentiments in the translations. I contextualize the cultural significance of the translation of romance novels and analyze a Korean translation of a Japanese novel, The Gold Demon, as a case study. In this work, the translator, Cho Chunghwan, negotiates colonial power through the notion of collective suffering and salvation, and by employing a Christian and patriarchal rhetoric of love.

      • Against the Nihilism of Suffering and Death: Richard E. K. Kim and His Works

        This article examines the life and works of Richard E. K. Kim (1932–2009), a first-generation Korean diasporic writer in the United States. It focuses on how Kim struggled to overcome the nihilism of suffering and death that derived from colonialism and the Korean War through his literary works. Kim witnessed firsthand these two major historical events, which caused irrevocable psychological and physical damage to many people of his generation. In his autobiographical fiction, he conveys painful memories of the events by reviving the voices of people in that era. What his works offer us goes beyond vivid memories of the past, however; they also present the power of forgiveness as a condition to overcome the nihilism of suffering and death. Remembrance and forgiveness are, therefore, two major thematic pillars of his works that enable us to connect to these difficult and traumatic times. These themes are portrayed in such a gripping way mainly because Kim tried to maintain a certain distance—an emotional and linguistic distance—from the familiar, in order to elucidate the reality of the human condition: an ontological position of the exile from which he produced his works. This article argues that Kim’s works provide us the possibility to transcend the nihilism of historical trauma through articulating the meaning of remembrance and forgiveness from his self-assumed position of exile.

        Culinary Intimacy in Fukazawa Ushio’s The Matchmaker and “When Yi Tongae Eats”

        Since her debut in 2012, Fukazawa Ushio has become a critical voice in the Japanese literary scene, writing about social issues including hate speech against Zainichi Koreans, abuse of migrant workers, gender inequality, and misogyny. One of the significant aesthetic features of her work is the use of food and foodways to explore these issues. This article examines the short story collection The Matchmaker and the five-part food essay “When Yi Tongae Eats,” focusing on their sensorial elaboration of Zainichi Koreans’ experiences of discrimination and desire to belong, sitting both at the intersection of gender and ethnicity. Fukazawa’s sensorial contemplation of the affective values associated with cooking, eating, and drinking, I argue, generates a sense of intimacy among characters and between text and reader that ultimately enables us to expand our understanding of the complexities of Zainichi Korean identity and their place in contemporary Japan.
