        Determinants of the burden and positivity of family caregivers of terminally ill cancer patients in Korea

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P><P><I>Objective</I>: Caregivers may experience positive or negative feelings about their role. The study investigated the determinants of the burden and positivity of family caregivers of Korean terminal cancer patients.</P><P><I>Methods</I>: A multicenter cross‐sectional survey was conducted with 139 family caregivers. Determinants of caregiver's burden and positivity were assessed by the Caregiver Reaction Assessment Scale and by three questions based on a previous study, respectively. Two separate hierarchical multiple regression models were used.</P><P><I>Results</I>: Each domain of the caregiver's burden and positivity was explained by different factors, with the total explained variance ranging between 14.4–33.6% and 2.6–18.3%, respectively. Caregivers who were unmarried, less educated, and/or had low incomes were more likely to be negatively affected, while those who shared caregiving responsibilities were less prone to negative consequences. Caregivers who were male, religious practitioners, and who perceived a higher burden of schedule disruptions were more likely to have a positive perception of their role, while those who perceived a lack of family support were less likely.</P><P><I>Conclusions</I>: Our results highlight the importance of sharing the caregiving burden with the other family members. Organizing a family meeting can provide an opportunity for other family members to acknowledge the feelings and reactions of the primary caregivers, and can prompt the sharing of caregiving responsibilities.         Comparison of Digital PCR and Quantitative PCR with Various SARS-CoV-2 Primer-Probe Sets

        The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) as an international health emergency. Current diagnostic tests are based on the reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) method, which is the gold standard test that involves the amplification of viral RNA. However, the RT-qPCR assay has limitations in terms of sensitivity and quantification. In this study, we tested both qPCR and droplet digital PCR (ddPCR) to detect low amounts of viral RNA. The cycle threshold (CT) of the viral RNA by RT-PCR significantly varied according to the sequences of the primer and probe sets with in vitro transcript (IVT) RNA or viral RNA as templates, whereas the copy number of the viral RNA by ddPCR was effectively quantified with IVT RNA, cultured viral RNA, and RNA from clinical samples. Furthermore, the clinical samples were assayed via both methods, and the sensitivity of the ddPCR was determined to be equal to or more than that of the RT-qPCR. However, the ddPCR assay is more suitable for determining the copy number of reference materials. These findings suggest that the qPCR assay with the ddPCR defined reference materials could be used as a highly sensitive and compatible diagnostic method for viral RNA detection.

      • 박휘락의 『한국 미술교육사: 미술교육 100년의 흐름(1895-1995)』를 읽고

        디자인사는 미술, 건축은 물론 역사학, 철학, 사회학이나 심리학까지 관련지어 연구해야 한다. 하지만 초중등학교 제도교육에서 미술과목 안에 있는 디자인 교과나 특성화 고등학교, 또는 교육대학에 속한 미술교육 내 디자인교육 전공은 한국디자인사 연구에 포함되고 있을까? 박휘락은 『한국 미술교육사: 미술교육 100년의 흐름(1895-1995)』에서 1895–1995년까지 한국 근대 디자인교육의 변천과정을 저술했다. 이를 통해 깨달은 것은 한국 디자인교육의 ‘배치(Agencement)’이다. ‘배치’는 공시적인 차원에서 만들어지는 ‘사건’으로 이루어진 ‘계열’이라고 할 수 있으며 그 자체로 역사성을 갖는다. 배치된 세계는 시간과 공간 속에 놓이고, 각각의 대상은 ‘포함’과 ‘배제’의 논의에 종속된다. 박휘락은 미술교육의 맥락에서 디자인교육사를 기록했다. 지금, 박휘락의 미술교육에 관한 기록을 디자인교육에 관한 논의 안에 ‘포함’하는 것은 그동안 한국디자인사에서 ‘배제’되었던 사건을 ‘재배치’하는 것이자 한국디자인사를 확장하는 또 하나의 ‘사건’이 될 수 있다. In his book, The History of Art Education in Korea: 100 Years of Art Education (1895–1995), Park Hwirak wrote about the transition process of modern Korean design education from 1895 to 1995. But why is his name unfamiliar to the design community? For research on design history, one should study not only art and architecture but also history, philosophy, sociology and psychology in relation to it. However, in such studies, design education included in design curriculum under institutional education, design education conducted at specialized high schools, and arts education majors at universities of education have not been taken into account. What I realized through this study was the agencement (arrangement) of Korean design education. There is something that must be considered when discussing agencement. First, the arranged world is a matter of space between “inclusion” and “exclusion.” Second, agencement is carried out in time and space, and the context of “ground” or “field” is necessarily important. To date, Park has written about modern Korean design education considering agencement within the history of art education in Korea. Therefore, it can be said that including and rearranging Park Hwirak’s name in Korean design history is an important event that expands Korean design history.

        서울시 녹지 연결망의 시계열 분석 및 정책적 함의

        본 연구는 그래프 이론을 적용하여 지난 35년(1984~2019년)간의 서울시 녹지 연결망의 변화를 다각적으로 비교·분석하고 정책적 함의를 제시하고자 하였다. Landsat 위성영상의 다중시기 정규식생지수를 통해 녹지 패치를 도출하고, 다양한 공간규모에서 직선거리와 최소비용경로에 따른 패치 및 비-패치 기반의 연결망 분석 기법을 적용했다. 연구 결과, 1984년부터 2019년까지 녹지 연결성이 회복되고 향상되었음을 정량적으로 확인하였고, 연결망 보전·관리에 있어서 중요한 녹지를 도출하였다. 비-패치 기반의 연결망 모형을 통해 시간 흐름에 따른 서울시의 핵심 녹지축 변화를 추적하여 북악산에서 남산, 국립서울현충원, 관악산으로 이어지는 녹지축의 회복을 확인할 수 있었다. 용산공원 신규 조성에 따른 연결성 기여도 평가 결과, 녹지 면적 증가 대비 연결성 증진 효과가 매우 높은 것으로 모의되었다. 또한, 용산공원은 서울시의 핵심 녹지축을 강화시키고, 확장시킬 수 있는 녹지로도 확인되었다. 연구 결과들은 서울시 도시생태계와 시민들의 삶의 질을 높일 수 있는 생활권 녹지공간 확충과 지속 가능한 도시기본계획 체계화 및 관리계획 수립을 위한 정책결정 과정에서 많은 기여를 할 수 있을 것으로 기대된다. We analyzed the temporal changes of green space network in Seoul from 1984 to 2019 using graph theory to suggest policy implications. For the analysis, we extracted green space patches using Landsat NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) time-series data. Patch- and non-patch-based network analyses were applied using Euclidean distance and least-cost distance at multi-spatial scales. The patch-based network analysis confirmed the notable recovery and improvement of the network connectivity during the study period. We identified the important green spaces that are pivotal in preserving and managing the green space network. In addition, based on the non-patch-based network analysis, we found the recovery trend of main green corridors connecting the area from north to south. The establishment of Yongsan Park contributed greatly to the improve the connectivity, compared to the increased area of the green space. The result also showed that Yongsan Park can strengthen and expand the green corridor. We hope our research provides useful information for policymakers to expand neighborhood green spaces and develop sustainable urban master plans.

        Enzyme delivery using protein-stabilizing and cell-penetrating 30Kc19α protein nanoparticles

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Nanoparticles (NPs) are an emerging strategy for drug delivery and have been studied for the delivery of various biomolecules, such as chemically synthesized drugs and therapeutic proteins. In particular, protein NPs are non-cytotoxic and biodegradable. Application of a full length recombinant 30Kc19 protein to human serum albumin (HSA) NPs has been shown to improve the cellular uptake and stability of the cargo enzyme. In this study, we demonstrate that drug delivery can be achieved with only the α-helix domain of the 30Kc19 protein (30Kc19α), and without the addition of HSA. Protein concentration and pH were crucial for NP generation. NPs had a uniformly spherical shape with an optimal diameter of 180–230nm, and released β-galactosidase in a sustained manner. The 30Kc19α protein provided stability to the cargo enzyme, and helped maintain the specific activity of the enzyme. X-gal staining showed effective delivery of β-galactosidase into human dermal fibroblasts. Non-cytotoxic property of the 30Kc19α protein demonstrates that such NPs could be a resourceful tool for delivering drugs to cells.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Protein nanoparticles can be generated with the α-helix domain of 30Kc19. </LI> <LI> Human serum albumin is not required for 30Kc19α protein nanoparticle generation. </LI> <LI> 30Kc19α nanoparticles showed high intracellular delivery potential for large cargos. </LI> <LI> 30Kc19α protein provided stability and helped maintain specific activity of enzyme. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>

        Recommendation system using Deep Autoencoder for Tensor data

        These days, as interest in the recommendation system with deep learning is increasing, a number of related studies to develop a performance for collaborative filtering through autoencoder, a state-of-the-art deep learning neural network architecture has advanced considerably. The purpose of this study is to propose autoencoder which is used by the recommendation system to predict ratings, and we added more hidden layers to the original architecture of autoencoder so that we implemented deep autoencoder with 3 to 5 hidden layers for much deeper architecture. In this paper, therefore we make a comparison between the performance of them. In this research, we use 2-dimensional arrays and 3-dimensional tensor as the input dataset. As a result, we found a correlation between matrix entry of the 3-dimensional dataset such as item-time and user-time and also figured out that deep autoencoder with extra hidden layers generalized even better performance than autoencoder.

        Dendrodoris guttata (Nudibranchia: Dendrodorididae) from Korean Waters

        The genus Dendrodoris Ehrenberg, 1831 includes about 46 valid species worldwide, and is found in relatively shallow waters in the Indo-Pacific, Atlantic, and Australian regions. To date, five Dendrodoris species have been reported from Korea. In this study, we report D. guttata (Odhner, 1917) collected from Jeju Island. Morphology is distinguished from other Dendrodoris species by the shape of the black spots on the dorsal mantle and coloration of the gills. We determined mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase I (cox1) partial sequences and combined them with publically available sequences of closely related congeneric species to examine its phylogenetic position among Dendrodoris species.

      • Obstetric outcomes associated with sonographically identified large uterine fibroids

        목적: The aim of this study is to assess the influence of myomas during pregnancy on obstetric outcome. 방법: 22 nulliparous pregnant women with uterine myomas identified by ultrasound scans who delivered at Ewha Womans University Medical Center between January 2013 and December 2016 were enrolled. We excluded one case of Edward syndrome which was terminated at 19weeks due to intrauterine fetal deaths by at second trimester. We defined fibroids as large if they measured >5 cm in diameter on ultrasonography at first visit of hospital. Additional data were extracted and consisted of diameter of the largest fibroid and type of fibroid(intramural, subserosal). Medical records were reviewed retrospectively to obtain obstetrical outcomes(admission for myoma related pain, preterm labor, preterm delivery, birth weight, mode of delivery, postpartum complications). 결과: ① The mean age of pregnant women was 37±4.66 years old. ② At first visit, the mean diameter of the largest fibroid was 7.65 cm ranged from 5.49 cm to 12 cm and the mean gestational age was 24.1weeks ③ The type of myoma : subserosal(33.3%), intramural(66.7%) ④ The mean birth weight was 2.86±0.85kg and mean gestational age was 38.5weeks. ⑤ Myoma pain which required admission occurred in 3(13.6%) of the women at 16, 20, 23 weeks. ⑥ Preterm labor occured in 5(22.7%) cases, which all led to preterm delivery but 2 cases(9.5%) of delivery before 34weeks. ⑦ A cesarean section was performed 9(42.9%) of the pregnancies with lower segment transverse uterine incision. Indications of cesrean section : (3 cases of malpresentation, 3 cases by patients’ request, 1 case of post myomectomy status, 1 case of pre-eclampsia and 1 case of fetal distress) ⑧ All women with huge myoma(>10cm) delivered by vagina without postpartum bleeding. ⑨ 3 cases(14.3%) were need for postpartum blood transfusion. 결론: We found that large uterine fibroids in particular are associated with preterm labor but there were few cases of preterm delivery before 34weeks. Large uterine myoma during pregnancy may cause abdominal pain but symptoms can usually be controlled by conservative treatment. In addition, there were no adverse obstetric outcomes with huge myoma. This data can be helpful when we counsel to women with fibroids larger than 5 cm in diameter in pregnancy.
