Purpose: The purpose of the this study was to examine the dietary knowledge and educational needs of stroke patients and analyze the related factors that are associated with dietary knowledge and educational needs. Methods: Our study analyzed data from 146 stroke patients. The survey was conducted by individual interviews using questionnaires and data collected from participants’ medical records. Dietary knowledge and educational needs were measured by tools developed by the author. Results: The mean scores for the dietary knowledge and educational needs were 19.09±3.48 and 36.17±7.18, respectively. Many stroke patients had misconceptions about soy sauce, cholesterol, and fruits. The most needed items in dietary education was first identifying foods that are beneficial or harmful, and second, food interaction with medications. As for the results of multiple regressions, dietary knowledge was significantly associated with gender, educational attainment, monthly income, exercise, body mass index, and level of compliance to dietary therapy. Additionally, the educational needs were significantly related with educational attainment and employment. Conclusion: For secondary prevention of stroke patients, education strategy considering dietary knowledge and educational needs of stroke patients should be established. Special attention is needed for stroke patients with a lower level of dietary knowledge and educational needs.
Comparisons of Nutrient Concentration of Leaves, Roots, and Soils in Three Bamboo Stands

In bamboo, the nutrient status of tissues and associated soil is an important indicator of nutrient uptake by various bamboo species. In this study, the nutrient concentrations of leaves, roots, and mineral soil at 0-10 cm depths were examined in three bamboo stands [Phyllostachys bambusoides S ieb. et Zucc, Phyllostachys nigra var. henonis Stapf ex. Rendle, and Phyllostachys pubescens (Mazel) Ohwi] at a broad regional scale in southern Korea. In the three bamboo species, species-specific differences were observed in the carbon (C) and calcium (Ca) concentrations of leaves and in the nitrogen (N) and magnesium (Mg) concentrations of roots. Ca concentrations in leaves were significantly higher in P. bambusoides (11.94 g Ca kg-1) than in P. pubescens (7.83 g Ca kg-1), whereas potassium (K) concentrations were lowest in P. bambusoides among the three bamboo species. N concentrations in the roots were significantly lower in P. pubescens (5.23 g N kg-1) than in P. nigra var. henonis (7.72 g N kg-1). In contrast to bamboo tissues, soil nutrients, such as total N, organic C, exchangeable Ca2+, and Mg2+, did not differ significantly among the bamboo species. These results suggest that species-specific practices will be required for nutrient management of bamboo stands because nutrient concentrations vary considerably in the tissues of the three studied species.

We report a rare case of long-term survival in a patient who received local therapy and salvage chemotherapy for recurrent metastases, along with a literature review. A 65-year-old male patient underwent subtotal gastrectomy for advanced gastric adenocarcinoma. Six months after gastrectomy, 2 metastatic intra-abdominal lymph node enlargements were detected, which were treated with radiotherapy. At 55 months after gastrectomy, an abdominal wall mass was detected, which was treated by surgical resection. The patient received 5-fluorouracil/leucovorin/irinotecan chemotherapy for 27 months before and after radiotherapy and docetaxel chemotherapy for 6 months after surgical resection of the abdominal wall metastasis. At the last visit, 7.8 years since the initial resection of the primary gastric cancer and 6.2 years since detection of the first metastases, the patient was disease-free and required no further chemotherapy. This case suggests that repeated local therapy offers potential for long-term survival in a carefully selected subset of patients with recurrent metastases.

Conflict in public construction projects has increased for the last decades. It not only entails enormous social and economic costs but also makes stakeholders suffer from unnecessary expense and time waste. This study defines the the conflict index for public construction projects based on news data, and calculates conflict index for representative past and current public construction projects that has been deepened conflicts at the national level. The result indicates that the major conflict issue of the 2nd Jeju Airport Project are the environment and location whereas that of the Gaduk New Airport Project are the safety, location and necessity. This approach is expected to enable construction project managers to manage conflicts quantitatively based on comparing with past cases.

Among the representative types of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) sequences, inversion recovery (IR) can improve the ability to detect brain lesions. The purpose of this study was to confirm the MRI characteristics according to TI changes in IR sequences. In this study, the MRiLab simulation program a newly developed, well-validated program was used to quantitatively analyze image characteristics with respect to the TI value in the IR sequence. Brain tissue phantom and standard phantom images were acquired by changing the TI at 100-ms intervals from 100 to 2,500 ms. In brain tissue phantom images, signal intensity (SI) values showed the lowest signals at TI values of 400, 700, and 2,500 ms in the white matter (WM), gray matter (GM), and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), respectively. The contrast evaluated in CSF-WM was superior at 400 ms and the lowest at 1,800 ms. In addition, the contrast evaluated in WM-GM was superior at 400 ms and the lowest at 1,500 ms. In the case of the brain standard phantom, the SI and contrast showed the same tendency as brain tissue phantom. In conclusion, an appropriate TI value was derived for obtaining images with excellent SI and contrast between brain tissues using a newly developed simulation program.
