        Swertiamarin ameliorates inflammation and oxidative damage in autoimmune encephalomyelitis mouse model

        Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a degenerative autoimmune disease attacks the myelin sheath of the central nervous system (CNS) neurons causing different disabilities. According to recent evidence, the main bioactive component in Enicostema axillare , the Swrtiamarin (SM) has been found to exert anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities against several diseases. However, SM activities in treatment of autoimmune diseases remain to be explored. Herein, we used a murine model of MS, to show that SM treatment ameliorates the severity of experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE). This occurs through reducing the levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines and infiltration of CD4+CD45+ cells into CNS. That was associated with a reduction in the expression of STAT3 and NFkB in CD4+ T cells under Th17 and LPS-stimulated macrophages. Furthermore, in silico studies revealed that SM interacts with NF-E2-related factor 2 (NRF2), and therefore, suppressed oxidative stress by inducing formation NRF2-antioxidant response element (ARE) complex. We found that SM is an agonist of NRF2 complex regulating the total CD4 population and antioxidant markers in EAE mice. Molecular docking analysis showed a stable and higher binding affinity between SM and NRF2. Results revealed that SM treatment increased the complex formation between ARE and NRF2 where immunoprecipitation methods showed a higher binding affinity of ARE to NRF2 in SM treated animals. Complex formation triggered ARE cascade of antioxidant gene clusters and reduces the MS pathological alterations in EAE mice model. Current data proposed SM as an effective biomolecule in treatment of MS and controlling neuronal damage through inhibiting oxidative stress markers and targeting NRF2.

      • Survival Rate of Breast Cancer Patients In Malaysia: A Population-based Study

        Breast cancer is the most common cancer among Malaysian women. Other than hospital-based results, there are no documented population-based survival rates of Malaysian women for breast cancers. This populationbased retrospective cohort study was therefore conducted. Data were obtained from Health Informatics Centre, Ministry of Health Malaysia, National Cancer Registry and National Registration Department for the period from $1^{st}$ January 2000 to $31^{st}$ December 2005. Cases were captured by ICD-10 and linked to death certificates to identify the status. Only complete data were analysed. Survival time was calculated from the estimated date of diagnosis to the date of death or date of loss to follow-up. Observed survival rates were estimated by Kaplan-Meier method using SPSS Statistical Software version 17. A total of 10,230 complete data sets were analysed. The mean age at diagnosis was 50.6 years old. The overall 5-year survival rate was 49% with median survival time of 68.1 months. Indian women had a higher survival rate of 54% compared to Chinese women (49%) and Malays (45%). The overall 5-year survival rate of breast cancer patient among Malaysian women was still low for the cohort of 2000 to 2005 as compared to survival rates in developed nations. Therefore, it is necessary to enhance the strategies for early detection and intervention.

        Potential of Activated Carbon Derived from Local Common Reed in the Refining of Raw Cane Sugar

        Common reed (Fragmites australis), a local invasive grass, was investigated as a possible feedstock for the production of activated carbon. Dried crushed stems were subjected to impregnation with phosphoric acid (30, 40 and 50%) followed by pyrolysis at 400~500℃ with final washing and drying. Obtained carbons were characterized by determining: carbon yield, ash content, slurry pH, textural properties and capacity to remove color bodies from factory-grade sugar liquor. Produced carbons possessed surface area up to 700 m2/g, total pore volumes up to 0.37 cm3/g, and proved to be microporous in nature. Decolorization of hot sugar liquor at 80℃ showed degrees of color removal of 60 up to 77% from initial color of 1100~1300 ICU, at a carbon dose of 1.0 g/100 ml liquor. No correlation seems to hold between synthesis conditions and % R but depends on the degree of microporosity. A commercial activated carbon N showed a comparative better color removal capacity of 91%. Common reed proved to be a viable carbon precursor for production of good adsorbing carbon suitable for decolorization in the sugar industry, as well as in other environmental remediation processes.

      • Micro Analysis of Gender Effect on Service Quality Determinants and Customer Satisfaction in Banking Sector: A Study of Banks in Saudi Arabia

        Service quality is a competitive weapon in the banking industry. Better understanding of customer's perception of service quality in the banking industry and the drivers of such perceptions will be a sound basis for continuous improvement in the quality of service offered to customers, customer satisfaction and customer retention in the industry. An earlier study by the same authors (Ibrahim and Bokkasam, 2016) revealed that the six SERVQUAL determinants are significantly related to and explain about 84% of overall customer satisfaction. It was also observed that the female customers perceived higher level of positive perception towards SERVQUAL determinants. The present study carries out a micro-analysis of the influence of gender on the constituents of the service quality and customer satisfaction for all the six dimensions of the SERVQUAL: Access, Communication, Competence, Tangibility, Empathy and Reliability, in Saudi banking sector. The study also analyses gender-wise levels of satisfactions with regard to individual components constituting various factors of the constituents of SERVQUAL. It was observed that the male customers have significantly low levels of satisfactions with regard to promptness in solving conflicting issues and comfort during waiting time in the bank.

        Optimizing Treatment of Oil Palm-Empty Fruit Bunch (OP-EFB) Fiber: Chemical, Thermal and Physical Properties of Alkalized Fibers

        Oil-palm empty fruit bunch (EFB) is a waste matter that is abundantly generated from the oil palm industries. Natural fibers derived from this lignocellulosic biomass have the potential to be used as reinforcement material in polymer composites as a greener alternative to synthetic fibers. However, some treatment has to be done to overcome inherent disadvantages in natural fibers and further improve its properties. One such method to prepare the fibers for chemical modification is by alkalization. In this study the EFB fibers were immersed in sodium hydroxide (NaOH) solution with concentrations and immersion times varied to 4, 8 and 12 w/v % and 6, 12, 24 and 48 h, respectively. The EFB fibers were characterized using FTIR, TGA, XRD, FE-SEM, diameter profiling and mechanical tests. Results from FTIR showed that the treated EFB have significant increment of intensity at 3335 cm-1 corresponding to -OH groups. Optimum treatment conditions for the EFB fibers were found at 4 w/v% NaOH and 24 h. Diameter profiling showed better uniformity in the treated EFB fibers with improved tensile properties.

      • Effects of Tobacco Smoking on the Dorsum of the Tongue and Buccal Epithelium

        Objective: The aim of this study was to assess the effects of tobacco smoking on the dorsum of the tongue and buccal epithelium. Methodology: This case control cross-sectional study was conducted with 174 smoking and non-smoking volunteers living in the city of Hail, Northern KSA. Cytological Materials were obtained from buccal mucosa and dorsum of the tongue, and assessed using cytopathological methods. Results: In buccal smears, cytological atypia was observed in 17 out of 101 (16.8%) smoker cases but only 3/73(4.1%) of the controls. For cytological atypia in buccal and tongue smears, the adjusted odd ratio (OR) and the 95% confidence interval (CI) were found to be 4.7 (1.3-16.8), P < 0.016)) and 4.3 (0.93- 20.2), P <0.06)), respectively, in the two sites. Conclusion: Tobacco smoking is a major risk factor for occurrence of cytological atypia, which might subsequently develop into oral precancerous and cancerous lesions. Oral exfoliative cytology is an easy and cheap non-invasive procedure which appears highly suitable for screening populations at risk of developing oral cancer.

        Synthesis, characterization, and application of Fe-CNTs nanocomposite for BrO3 remediation from water samples

        Iron hydr(oxide) based multi-walled nanotubes (Fe-CNTs) nanocomposite was synthesized, and its adsorptive potential for BrO3 removal from synthetic and commercially available bottled water samples was tested. Residual BrO3 concentration was determined using ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass. Spectroscopic and morphological studies revealed that anchored Fe ions on the nanocomposites surface/in the walls were responsible for BrO3 adsorption without causing structural defects to CNTs. Rapid adsorption kinetics was observed, accomplishing 65–85% adsorption at varied concentrations in 5 minutes. Elution study showed optimum BrO3 recovery with 0.1 M HCl. Bottled water samples treatment with Fe-CNTs nanocomposite showed residual BrO3 concentration below instrumental detection limit.

      • On the Need for Efficient Load Balancing in Large-scale RPL Networks with Multi-Sink Topologies

        Low-power and Lossy Networks (LLNs) have become the common network infrastructure for a wide scope of Internet of Things (IoT) applications. For efficient routing in LLNs, IETF provides a standard solution, namely the IPv6 Routing Protocol for LLNs (RPL). It enables effective interconnectivity with IP networks and flexibly can meet the different application requirements of IoT deployments. However, it still suffers from different open issues, particularly in large-scale setups. These include the node unreachability problem which leads to increasing routing losses at RPL sink nodes. It is a result of the event of memory overflow at LLNs devices due to their limited hardware capabilities. Although this can be alleviated by the establishment of multi-sink topologies, RPL still lacks the support for effective load balancing among multiple sinks. In this paper, we address the need for an efficient multi-sink load balancing solution to enhance the performance of PRL in large-scale scenarios and alleviate the node unreachability problem. We propose a new RPL objective function, Multi-Sink Load Balancing Objective Function (MSLBOF), and introduce the Memory Utilization metrics. MSLBOF enables each RPL node to perform optimal sink selection in a way that insure better memory utilization and effective load balancing. Evaluation results demonstrate the efficiency of MSLBOF in decreasing packet loss and enhancing network stability, compared to MRHOF in standard RPL.

      • Managing Information by Utilizing WordNet as the Database for Semantic Search Engine

        The growth of data and information has encouraged researchers to overcome information overloaded. One of the convincing methods is through utilization of WordNet, a large lexical database of English. Generally, WordNet is used in Natural Language Processing (NLP) area and increasingly manipulated in the information retrieval field. Some search engines have using the WordNet in acquiring better meaning of user-entered keyword. Its usage might help in addressing the emergence of huge numbers of information on the web. This paper discusses the WordNet as an alternative database for semantic search engine (SSE). The SSE is then used for information retrieval. We tested our semantic search engine and compare it using Google and Yahoo search engines. Results show that our SSE gives better information retrieval when it comes towards personalization using user profiling to produce more relevant results.
