A Review on Arranging Environmental Database in Asia and Applications of GIS in Geographical Studies

The objectives of this report is to review our works on arranging database of atmospheric environments of Asia and application of GIS in geographical analyses. Our group(Eguchi, T., Masuda, K., Matsumoto, J., Shinoda, M. and Kitajima, H.) arrange the daily rainfall database in Asia and Oceania. Eguchi(1988) showed the relationship between precipitation and upper cloudiness. Matsumoto(1992) discussed seasonal march and retreat of Asian Monsoon using this database. H. Kitajima(1993) constructed the snow database of Japan and clarified the features of snow depth distribution and its seasonal change in Japan. K. Iwasaki and Y. Hashimoto(1995) showed the case study of the application of GIS in the climatic analysis using this database.
STUDIES OF THE MARTIAN NORTH POLAR CAP BEFORE VERNAL EQUINOX, 1975

Reanalysis of the observations of Mars made at the Hida Observatory in 1975 with a new image processing method is reported. Red filter images taken in the period before vernal equinox (areocentric longitude of the sun Ls=$0^{\circ}$) revealed dark surface features at the northern high latitudes, while blue filter images taken at the same time showed the extensive polar hood. The latitude of the northernmost feature observed was about $67^{\circ}$N. An extensive north polar cap, which is predicted by most of the existing models and observed with Viking, did not exist in our reanalyzed images obtained at the Hida Observatory in 1975.

Background: Physical activity (PA) is ranked as a leading health indicator and the workplace is a key setting to promote PA. The purpose of this study was to examine how goal-setting and exercise self-efficacy (SE) during a health promotion program influenced PA level among Japanese workers. Methods: Using a cross-sectional study design, we surveyed 281 employees. The short version of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire was used to assess PA level. Exercise SE was assessed using a partially modified version of Oka's exercise SE scale. Personal goals were assessed as the total numbers of "yes" responses to five items regarding "details of personal goals to perform PA". A mediational model was used to examine whether exercise SE mediates between the number of personal goals and PA level. Results: The mean age of the participants was 46.3 years, 76.2% were men, and the most common occupational category was software engineer (30.6%). The average PA level per week exceeded the recommended level in 127 participants (45.2%). One hundred and eighty-four participants (65.5%) set some form of concrete personal goal to perform PA. The relationship between the number of personal goals and PA level was mediated by exercise SE. Conclusion: Our study showed that exercise SE mediates goal-setting and increases PA. The results suggest that the components of PA promotion programs should be tailored to enhance participants' confidence in performing PA.
Preparation of BaTiO<sub>3</sub> Thick Film by an Interfacial Polymerization Method

[ $BaTiO_3$ ] thick film by an interfacial polymerization method was prepared at the liquid/liquid interface between benzyl alcohol saturated solution with the basic catalyst [diethyl amine ($NHEt_2$) or triethylamine ($NEt_3$)], and the water dissolved with $TiO_2$ and $Ba(CH_3COO)_2$. The film thickness increased gradually with an increase in diethyl amine($NHEt_2$) or triethylamine($NEt_3$) volume and the reaction time. The homogeneity of $BaTiO_3$ thick film after sintered at $600^{\circ}C$ was confirmed by EPMA analysis, which showed that both of Ba and Ti element were homogeneously distributed on the surface as well as in the perpendicular direction of the film. The thickness of $BaTiO_3$ film obtained by this process was $8.75\;{\mu}m$.

$La_{2}O_{3}-TiO_{2}-SiO_{2}$ glass, a type that could not obtained so far by the conventional melting method, was prepared successfully using a sol gel process. Glass derived with the sol-gel process has compositions of $5La_{2}O_{3}-5TiO_{2}-90SiO_{2},\;5La_{2}O_{3}-10TiO_{2}-85SiO_{2}$, and $5La_{2}O_{3}-20TiO_{2}75SiO_{2}$. The UV-visible absorption edge of all glass compositions was below 400 nm. The measured density is in the range of 2.55-2.89, and was nearly identical to the calculated density and the refractive index of the glasses derived from the sol-gel ranges from 1.545 to 1.645. The molar additive coefficient of $TiO_{2}$ measured in this ternary system is lower than the calculated value, while the value of $La_{2}O_{3}$ is higher.

Perovskite lanthanum strontium manganese oxide (LSMO, strontium-substituted lanthanum manganite) La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 nanoparticles were synthesized via the low-temperature calcination of the precursor, which was prepared using a mechanochemical route. A powder mixture of lanthanum chloride, strontium chloride, manganese chloride and sodium carbonate was high-energy milled by a planetary ball mill under semiwet (moist) conditions to obtain the precursor. To study the mechanochemical effects on the formation of LSMO, a thermogravimetric (TG) analysis was conducted for the precursors prepared under various conditions; the precursors and the intermediates formed during calcination were identified by X-ray diffraction (XRD). The calcination of the milled precursor at 600 ◦C resulted in the formation of LSMO nanoparticles with good induction heating properties. The LSMO/hydroxyapatite composites exhibited rapid temperature increases in an AC magnetic field. The obtained results demonstrate that the LSMO nanoparticles and LSMO/hydroxyapatite composites are promising candidates for magnetic hyperthermia treatments.
