        The physical activity paradox in relation to work ability and health-related productivity loss in Korea

        OBJECTIVES: The physical activity paradox suggests that occupational physical activity (OPA), unlike leisure-time physical activity (LTPA), may detrimentally impact health. We explored the relationships of OPA and LTPA with work ability (WA) and health-related productivity loss (HRPL). METHODS: This study included 5,501 workers in Korea who were recruited in 2021 through a web-based cross-sectional questionnaire. The questionnaire was utilized to quantify OPA and LTPA in metabolic equivalents, while WA and HRPL were also measured. Non-parametric regression, using a generalized additive model (GAM), was employed to visualize the relationships of LTPA and OPA with WA and HRPL. Mean differences in WA and HRPL, in relation to OPA and LTPA, were examined using linear regression models. These models were adjusted for covariates including sex, age, body mass index, education level, alcohol consumption, smoking history, insomnia, occupation, hours worked, and income. RESULTS: The GAM and linear regression analyses revealed that higher LTPA corresponded with higher WA and lower HRPL. In contrast, as OPA increased, WA decreased and HRPL increased. However, within the group with high OPA, HRPL was not significantly lower in the high-LTPA subgroup relative to the low-LTPA subgroup (mean difference=1.92%, p=0.343). This pattern was especially pronounced among workers aged 60 years and older, with an increase in HRPL observed with increasing LTPA among the respondents with high OPA. CONCLUSIONS: High LTPA levels were associated with elevated WA and diminished HRPL. In contrast, higher levels of OPA were associated with lower WA and higher HRPL.

      • A Study on Growth and Development Information and Growth Prediction Model Development Influencing on the Production of Citrus Fruits

        The purpose of this study is to develop the growth prediction model that can predict growth and development information influencing on the production of citrus fruits. The growth model was developed to predict the floral leaf ratio, number of fruit sets, fruit width, and overweight fruits depending on the main period of growth and development by considering the weather factors because the fruit production is influenced by weather depending on the growth and development period. To predict the outdoor-grown citrus fruit production, the investigation result for the standard farms is used as the basic data; in this study, we also understood that the influence of weather factors on the citrus fruit production based on the data from 2004 to 2013 of the outdoor-grown citrus fruit observation report in which the standard farms were targeted by the Agricultural Research Service and suggested the growth and development information prediction model with the weather information as an independent variable to build the observation model. The growth and development model for outdoor-grown citrus fruits was assumed by using the Ordinary Least Square method (OLS), and the developed growth prediction model can make a prediction in advance with the weather factors prior to the observation investigation for the citrus fruit production. To predict the growth and development information of the production of citrus fruits having a great ripple effect as a representative crop in Jeju agriculture, the prediction result regarding the production applying the weather factors depending on growth and development period could be applied usefully.

      • 교내 실내환경위생 기초조사

        This study was carried out to determine the adequacy of indoor environments in lecture room, laboratory room, restroom, building veranda, corridor, reading room of library, a mew building robby. In this study, carbon monoxide concentration, oxygen content, illumination intensity and noise were included. For this study, lecture room in Natural Science Building reading room of library, the cafeteria at Natural Science Building, an laboratory room of Natural Science Building Nartial Art and robby of new Building were surveyed and measured two times from each places during November, 2003. The following results were obtained ; The carbon monoxide concentrations were increased to the 10ppm at restroom and campus cafeteria, due to the tobacco smoking. The oxygen contents was 20.1 - 21.9%, The illuminations were varied to the places, the passage was low to the 72.2 - 145Lux. More illuminations were needed at passages and laboratory room. The noise were varied at the sites, the high noise was recorded at the passage 86.9dB. The noise of passages were a hazard factor to establish academic pursuit. The hygienic indoor environment of the campus were varied, but it is important for academic pursuit to do regular management in illuminations and control policy of noise at campus.

      • Effect of Processing Additives on Organic Photovoltaics: Recent Progress and Future Prospects

        <P>Due to the short diffusion length of approximately 10 nm of an exciton in bulk heterojunction (BHJ) organic solar cells (OSCs) comprising electron donors and acceptors, a formation with well phase-separated nanomorphology in BHJ films has been one of the most important issues in achieving efficient charge separation and extraction in OSCs. By adding a small amount of a high boiling point solvent or molecules to a bulk heterojunction (BHJ) solution, processing additive techniques have recently begun to offer an attractive and efficient method for controlling the nanoscale BHJ morphology of state-of-the-art OSCs with power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) exceeding approximately 11%. However, it remains unknown whether the effect of processing additives can potentially pave the way for the ongoing development of various BHJ components and the commercialization of OSCs. Here, recent progress in understanding and developing the effects of processing additives on OSCs is highlighted. This overview suggests possible guidelines for a wide range of BHJ components with respect to morphological/structural evolution. Furthermore, the rational correlations among processing additives, BHJ components, and fabrication technologies and the performance of high-performance and low-cost OSCs are discussed along with future commercialization prospects.</P>

      • Enzymatic Extract from Mandarin Peel Inhibits Adipogenesis through Down-regulating of PPARγ and C/EBP α in 3T3-L1 adipocytes

        Mandarin peel (MP) is a by-product occurred during citrus juice or other products processing. The purpose of the current study was to investigate the potential anti-obesity activity of an enzymatic extract of MP in inhibiting adipogenesis in 3T3-L1 adipocytes. The enzymatic extract (MPCE) was prepared using the commercial food grade carbohydrase, Celluclast. Levels of lipid accumulation and triglyceride were significantly lower in MPCE treated cells than those in untreated cells. In addition, MPCE treatment reduced protein expression levels of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-γ (PPARγ), CCAAT/enhancer-binding proteins α (C/EBPα), sterol regulatory element-binding protein 1 (SREBP 1), and fatty acid binding protein 4 (FABP 4). These results suggest that MPCE possesses inhibitory effect on adipogenesis through down-regulating expression levels of adipogenesis-related proteins. Therefore, current findings demonstrate that MPCE possesses potent anti-obesity properties and could be a potential ingredient used in functional food industries.

        Purpose: The purpose of this study was to design a model for computerized information system (CIS) based on nurses' demand for CIS. Methods: The process involves two steps: First, analysis of nurses' information requirements from which the data were collected from 230 nurses using self-administered questionnaires and analyzed using MS-Excel Program. Second, designing a model for CIS to be utilized for diagnostic tests based on nurses' information requirements. Results: The results from questionnaires were scored using 4-point Likert scale and data analysis revealed that nurses use computerized system 2.66+0.58. and 3.37+0.52, respectively. The majority of the subjects(228/230) showed that CIS is highly needed and useful. The second step of the process include the information requirements of diagnostic tests were classified in to 3parts: obtaining clinical specimen, examination requests and reports of examination results. Operation process was classified into 2 parts: data entry and data inquiry. The model for CIS was designed under the principle of convenience and unified single screen. Conclusion: The new CIS will provide more convenience and satisfactory results to users in clinical situation and further improve the quality of medical care system.

        감귤피 효소적 추출물의 지방세포에서의 항비만 효과

        본 연구는 감귤 가공공정 중에 발생하는 가공부산물인 감귤피의 산업적 이용성 및 유용성을 증대시키고자 효소적 추출법을 적용하여 추출물을 제조하고 항비만 활성을 측정하였다. 감귤피 효소적 추출물(MPCE)의 폴리페놀 함량은 이전의 연구에서 보고한 유기용매 추출물보다 높은 함량을 나타내었다. MPCE의 항비만활성을 알아보기 위해 지방세포 분화억제에 미치는 영향을 확인한 결과 MPCE는 농도 의존적으로 지방세포의 분화 및 지방축적을 감소시켰으며 이는 세포독성에 의한 것이 아님을 세포생존율 측정을 통해 확인하였다. 또한 MPCE는 adipogenesis 관련 전사인자인 C/EBPα, SREBP-1, PPARγ, FABP4의 단백질 발현을 감소시켰다. 이러한 결과들을 통해 MPCE는 adipogenesis 관련 전사인자의 단백질 발현 억제하여 지방세포의 분화 및 지방축적을 억제하였으며, 이를 통해 항비만 효과를 나타낸다는 것을 확인하였다. 따라서 MPCE는 비만 예방 효능을 가진 기능성 식품 소재로서의 활용 가치가 있는 것으로 판단되며, 보다 명확한 항비만효능을 확인하기 위해 추후 동물 실험 등에 대한 연구가 필요할 것으로 생각된다.         <P>Recently, spinal cord researchers have focused on multifaceted approaches for the treatment of spinal cord injury (SCI). However, as there is no cure for the deficits produced by SCI, various therapeutic strategies have been examined using animal models. Due to the lack of standardized functional assessment tools for use in such models, it is important to choose a suitable animal model and precise behavioral test when evaluating the efficacy of potential SCI treatments. In the present review, we discuss recent evidence regarding functional recovery in various animal models of SCI, summarize the representative models currently used, evaluate recent cell-based therapeutic approaches, and aim to identify the most precise and appropriate scales for functional assessment in such research.</P>
