      • Hydrothermal synthesis and electrochemical properties of KMn8O16 nanorods for lithium-ion battery applications.

        <P>KMn8O16 nanorods were prepared through a facile hydrothermal method by using KMnO4 and MnSO4 as reactants. The KMn8O16 samples synthesized at different temperatures (100-160 degrees C) were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and its electrochemical properties were tested by galvanostatic charge/discharge system. The effect of reaction temperature on the morphology and electrochemical properties was investigated. As electrode materials for the lithium ion battery cycled between 1.5 and 4.2 V, the KMn8O16 nanorods synthesized at 160 degrees C show the highest reversible discharge capacity (160.1 mA h/g even after 50 cycles at current density of 50 mA/g) and the best cycling stability. These results indicate that the KMn8O16 nanorods could be a promising cathode material for lithium ion batteries.</P>

        Molecular characterization of Japanese encephalitis virus strains prevalent in Chinese swine herds

        Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) is the leading cause of viral encephalitis in Asia and domestic pigs serve as the amplifying hosts. In the present study, the full genomic sequences of two JEV strains (HEN0701 and SH0601) isolated from pigs in China were determined and compared with other 12 JEV strains deposited in GenBank. These two strains had an 88.8% nucleotide sequence similarity and 97.9% deduced amino acid sequence homology. HEN0701 had high nucleotide sequence and high amino acid sequence identity with genotype I (GI) strains, while SH0601 had high nucleotide sequence and high amino acid sequence identity with GIII strains at both the gene and full genome levels. Further phylogenetic analysis showed that HEN0701 belonged to the JEV GI group and SH0601 was classified as a GIII strain. Analysis of codon usage showed there were a few differences between the GI and GIII strains in nucleotide composition and codon usage for the open reading frames.

        Hybrid energy storage bidirectional DC–DC converter based on Hermite interpolation and linear active disturbance rejection control

        The steady and transient performance of a bidirectional DC–DC converter (BDC) is the key to regulating bus voltage and maintaining power balance in a hybrid energy storage system. In this study, the state of charge of the energy storage element (ESE) is used to calculate the converter current control coefficient (CCCC) via Hermite interpolation. Moreover, the charging and discharging currents of the BDC are controlled by the CCCC. Thus, the ESE runs in the best working region. The linear active disturbance rejection control is used in the current inner loop of BDC to solve the problems of slow dynamic response and parameter tuning in traditional PI control. The method can deal with the great transient response and a vast range of uncertainties, improve the BDC response speed by more than 20%, compensate for the unbalanced power timely, reduce the bus voltage fluctuation, and enhance the disturbance immunity of the system. The proposed method is verified by simulations and experiments.

        Swarm Intelligence Based Model Predictive Control Strategy for Optimal State Control of Discrete Time-varying MIMO Linear Systems

        It is a challenging task to effectively control multi-input and multi-output (MIMO) discrete time-varying linear systems. This paper proposes a swarm intelligence based model predictive control (MPC) strategy for addressing the challenge. First, a swarm intelligence based iterative dynamic optimal control solver is proposed to avoid the difficulty in solving the algebraic Riccati equation of finite-horizon optimal state control problem. Then, a swarm intelligence based online optimal controller is designed based on the MPC strategy, which can extend the optimal control problem from the finite-horizon to the infinite-horizon. Finally, the feedback structure of the online optimal state control system for MIMO discrete time-varying linear systems is constructed. A real-time simulation and a practical control experiment of a first order inverted pendulum system are employed to elborate the proposed method. The results show that the proposed method has the high efficiency, high accuracy, and anti-interference capability.

      • Autonomous Robot Driving Decision Strategy Following Road Signs And Traffic Rules

        Autonomous robot driving decision strategy following road signs and traffic rules is described using simulation with a Turtlebot [1]. A fully autonomous robot driving strategy is presented, which follows human level logic in decision making. A vision-based autonomous vehicles navigation system for road vehicles includes three main parts: 1) road and traffic signs detection; 2) vehicle movement guidance system; and 3) decision making following human level logic. The first two modules have been studied independently for many years and obtained many good results using different solutions, but there is little research in fully integrated system with high level decision making to achieve fully autonomous robot navigation following road signs. It is valuable to study and apply this concept into a real system. A simulation world is built according to real environment scenario proving the concept of study.

        A Novel Multiple Kernel Sparse Representation based Classification for Face Recognition

        It is well known that sparse code is effective for feature extraction of face recognition, especially sparse mode can be learned in the kernel space, and obtain better performance. Some recent algorithms made use of single kernel in the sparse mode, but this didn`t make full use of the kernel information. The key issue is how to select the suitable kernel weights, and combine the selected kernels. In this paper, we propose a novel multiple kernel sparse representation based classification for face recognition (MKSRC), which performs sparse code and dictionary learning in the multiple kernel space. Initially, several possible kernels are combined and the sparse coefficient is computed, then the kernel weights can be obtained by the sparse coefficient. Finally convergence makes the kernel weights optimal. The experiments results show that our algorithm outperforms other state-of-the-art algorithms and demonstrate the promising performance of the proposed algorithms.

        Experimental Validation of Numerical Model for Turbulent Flow in a Tangentially Fired Boiler with Platen Reheaters

        A 1 : 20 laboratory scale test rig of a 200 MW tangentially fired boiler is built up with completely simulated structures such as platen heaters and burners. Iso-thermal turbulent flow in the boiler is mapped by 3-D PDA (Particle Dynamic Analyzer). The 3-D numerical models for the same case are proposed based on the solution of к-$\varepsilon$ model closed RANS (Reynolds time-Averaged Navier-Stokes) equations, which are written in the framework of general coordinates and discretized in the corresponding body-fitted meshes. Not only are the grid lines arranged to fit the inner/outer boundaries. but also to align with the streamlines to the best possibility in order to reduce the NDE (numerical diffusion errors). Extensive comparisons of profiles of mean velocities are carried out between experiment and calculation. Predicted velocities in burner region were quantitatively similar with measured ones, while those in other area have same tendency with experimental counterpart.

        Electronic effects on protective mechanism of electropolymerized coatings based on N-substituted aniline derivatives for mild steel in saline solution

        Polyaniline (PANI), poly(N-methylaniline) (PNMA) and poly(N-formylanilide) (PNFA) coatings were fabricatedover mild steel via chronoamperometric strategy in oxalate electrolyte. Scanning electron microscope(SEM), attenuated total reflection infrared spectroscopy (ATR-IR) and X-ray photoelectronspectroscopy (XPS) evidenced the polymerization of monomers. Anticorrosive effects of PANI, PNMAand PNFA coatings for steel substrate were evaluated during long-term immersion in 3.5% NaCl solutionby potentiodynamic polarization, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and frequency modulation(EFM). Morphological variation for coated specimens before and after immersion in NaCl solutionwas also monitored by SEM and atomic force microscope (AFM). Differentiated protection capability wereobserved for three coatings following the sequence of PNFA > PNMA > PANI. Through electrochemical andinterfacial analyses, electroactivity and physical barrier were ascertained as the critical factors, especiallythe former one, in the long-term protection capacity. Electroactivity was distinguished by the elevatedapparent current density from non-destructive EFM measurements. Furthermore, electron-donationand -withdrawal effects of N-substituents played an essential role in coating electroactivity. In detail,N-substituents improved the anodic protection and physical barrier of PNMA and PNFA coatings. Particularly, formyl with electron-withdrawal effect reinforced the anodic protection and thus the superiorthe anticorrosion efficiency of PNFA for underlying steel.

      • Steroidal Saponins from Paris polyphylla Suppress Adhesion, Migration and Invasion of Human Lung Cancer A549 Cells Via Down-Regulating MMP-2 and MMP-9

        Background: Tumor metastases are the main reasons for oncotherapy failure. Paris polyphylla (Chinese name: Chonglou) has traditionally been used for its anti-cancer actions. In this article, we focus on the regulation of human lung cancer A549 cell metastases and invasion by Paris polyphylla steroidal saponins (PPSS). Materials and Methods: Cell viability was evaluated in A549 cells by MTT assay. Effects of PPSS on invasion and migration were investigated by wound-healing and matrigel invasion chamber assays. Adhesion to type IV collagen and laminin was evaluated by MTT assay. Expression and protease activity of two matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), MMP-2 and MMP-9, were analyzed by Western blotting and gelatin zymography, respectively. Results: PPSS exerted growth inhibitory effects on A549 cells, and effectively inhibited A549 cell adhesion, migration and invasion in a concentration-dependent manner. Western blotting and gelatin zymography analysis revealed that PPSS inhibited the expression and secretion of MMP-2 and MMP-9 in A549 cells. Conclusions: PPSS has the potential to suppress the migration, adhesion and invasion of A549 cells. PPSS could be a potential candidate for interventions against lung cancer metastases.

        Scaling analysis of magnetic-thermal behaviors in ferromagnetic insulator LaCoO3 thin film

        The structure, surface topography and magnetic properties of LaCoO3 (LCO) thin films deposited epitaxially on the SrTiO3 substrates have been investigated in detail. The LCO thin films show a typical ferromagneticparamagnetic (FM-PM) phase transition at 78 K. Based on the measurements of isothermal magnetization around the Curie point, the magnetic entropy change (ΔSM) of LCO thin films under various applied magnetic fields were obtained. By utilizing scaling theory, all of the ΔSM curves can be re-scaled, confirming that the FMPM phase transition is second-order magnetic phase transition. Moreover, the magnetic entropy change -ΔSM features a maximum around TC, whereas, power law fitting of -ΔSmax M with H gives n = 0.9704, which is obviously deviating from the standard value n = 2/3 for the Landau mean field model. This indicates that the mean field theory cannot be used to explain the critical behavior of LCO thin films which implies that the critical behavior of LCO thin films may involve complex magnetic interactions. These interactions are correlated with a long-term puzzling finding in this system why its Curie point is always around 80 K regardless of the different fabrication methods and conditions used in the film growth.
