Escherichia coli deactivation study controlling the atmospheric pressure plasma discharge conditions
Gweon, B.,Kim, D.B.,Moon, S.Y.,Choe, W. Elsevier 2009 CURRENT APPLIED PHYSICS Vol.9 No.3
Bio-applications of plasma have been widely studied in recent years. However, considering the high interests, the inactivation mechanisms of micro-organisms by plasma have not been clearly explained. The goal of this study was to find the sterilization mechanisms and define the major sterilization factors with the atmospheric pressure radio-frequency helium glow discharge. For the sterilization target the Escherichia coli was used. To begin with the sterilization study, the plasma characteristics were investigated by means of electrical and optical diagnostics. Especially, the gas temperature was controlled under 50oC by keeping the input power less than 70W to eliminate the thermal effects. Contribution of the UV irradiation from the plasma was studied and it turned out to be negligible. On the other hand, it was found that the sterilization was more effective up to 40% with only 0.15% oxygen addition to the helium supply gas. It indicates that the inactivation process was dominantly controlled by oxygen radicals, rather than heat or UV photons.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>For afternoon colonoscopy, same-day administration of sodium picosulfate, magnesium oxide, and citric acid (PM/Ca) is recommended. However, few studies have evaluated the bowel-cleansing efficacy and safety of this regimen. The aim of this study was to compare the bowel-cleansing efficacy, side effects, and patient's tolerability of a same-day split administration of PM/Ca with polyethylene glycol (PEG) for afternoon colonoscopy.</P><P>Patients were randomly assigned to a PM/Ca group or a PEG group. The PM/Ca group consumed 1 sachet of PM/Ca at 06:00 and 1 sachet of PM/Ca 4 hours before the colonoscopy. They also took 2 tablets of bisacodyl before sleep on the night before. The PEG group consumed 2 L of PEG at 06:00 and 2 L of PEG 4 hours before the colonoscopy. All subjects were instructed to finish the bowel cleanser or fluid at least 2 hours before colonoscopy. All colonoscopic examinations were performed in the afternoon on the same day. The bowel-cleansing efficacy was scored using 2 scales: the Ottawa Bowel Preparation Scale (OBPS) and the Aronchick scale. Ease of using the bowel cleanser was rated from 1 (very easy) to 5 (very difficult).</P><P>Two hundred nine patients underwent colonoscopy. The bowel-cleansing scores by OBPS did not differ between groups (5.0 vs 4.9, <I>P</I> = 0.63). Ease of using the bowel cleanser was superior in the PM/Ca group (<I>P</I> < 0.01).</P><P>The cleansing efficacy of PM/Ca administered on the day of colonoscopy is comparable to that of PEG. Patients prefer PM/Ca.</P>
Prolongation of Neuromuscular Block of Succinylcholine Chloride by Ketamine in Rabbits
Gweon, Kyeong Deog,Chung, Woon Hyok CATHOLIC MEDICAL CENTER 1980 Bulletin of the Clinical Research Institute Vol.8 No.1
The effect of ketamine on the muscle relaxation produced by succinylcholine chloride was studied. The cause of prolongation of neuromuscular block of succinylcholine chloride by ketamine was discussed. The clinical dose of S.C.C. should be carefully adjusted, if ketamine would be administered.

<P>Resveratrol has been shown to possess anticancer, anti-aging, and anti-inflammatory properties. Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) appear to be responsible for much of the extracellular matrix (ECM) degradation observed in the progression of cancer, aging and inflammation. We found that resveratrol significantly inhibited MMP-2 and MMP-9, and induced the expression of type II collagen and sex-determining region Y-box (SOX)-9 and the production of sulfated proteoglycans in HTB94 chondrosarcoma cells. Moreover, inhibition of MMPs with an MMP inhibitor further enhanced the effects of resveratrol. Phosphorylation of p38 was increased and phosphorylation of c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) was inhibited by resveratrol. Treatment with SB203580, a p38 kinase inhibitor, enhanced the suppression of MMP-2 and MMP-9 by resveratrol and inhibited resveratrol-induced stimulation of type II collagen and SOX-9 expression and production of sulfated proteoglycans. Treatment with SP600125, a JNK inhibitor, attenuated the effects of resveratrol on MMP-2 and MMP-9, and accelerated resveratrol-induced effects on type II collagen, SOX-9 and sulfated proteoglycan production. Our results suggest that resveratrol inhibits MMP-induced differentiation via the p38 kinase and JNK pathways in HTB94 chondrosarcoma cells.</P>
Trimodal imaging endoscopy reduces the risk of synchronous gastric neoplasia
Gweon, Tae-Geun,Park, Jae Myung,Lim, Chul-Hyun,Kim, Jin Su,Cho, Yu Kyung,Kim, Sang Woo,Choi, Myung-Gyu Wolters Kluwer Health, Inc. All rights reserved. 2015 European journal of gastroenterology & hepatology Vol.27 No.3
BACKGROUND AND AIM: The accurate detection of synchronous neoplasia is important to reduce the risk of recurrence after endoscopic resection. Trimodal imaging endoscopy (TMIE) was developed for this purpose. Our aim was to compare the effects of TMIE and white-light imaging endoscopy (WLIE) in gastric neoplasia detection. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Six hundred and seventy-eight patients with gastric dysplasia or cancer initially treated by endoscopic resection and who underwent follow-up endoscopy were analyzed retrospectively. Gastric neoplasia detected within 1 year of endoscopic resection was defined as synchronous disease. WLIE or TMIE was used to detect another gastric neoplasia before endoscopic resection. RESULTS: Synchronous gastric neoplasia was observed in 41 patients (6%), and occurred more frequently after the resection of carcinoma than dysplasia (8.5 vs. 4.6%, P=0.04). TMIE significantly reduced the frequency of synchronous gastric lesions than WLIE (2.3 vs. 9.3%, P<0.01). TMIE was more effective than WLIE in reducing the risk of missing a synchronous gastric lesion after adjusting for lesion multiplicity, experience, and resected lesion pathology (hazard ratio, 0.32; 95% confidence interval, 0.108–0.762). CONCLUSION: The risk of missing synchronous gastric neoplasia is higher after endoscopic resection for gastric cancer than dysplasia, but is reduced by TMIE. TMIE before endoscopic treatment can be useful in decreasing the risk of synchronous gastric neoplasia.

The $^{13}C-NMR$ shifts of a series of para-substituted $8-aryl-tricyclo[3.2.1.0^{2,7}]oct-8-yl$ and $9-aryl-tricyclo[3.3.1.0^{2,8}]-non-9-yl$ cations were measured in $FSO_3H/SO_2ClF\ at\-90^{\circ}$ in order to examine whether the ${\rho}^{C^+}$ values can be used as a measure of the geometric influence on the charge delocalization resulting from ${\rho}$ conjugation in rigid tricyclopropylcarbinyl cations. Plot of the ${\Delta}{\delta}^{C+} shifts against the ${\sigma}^{C+}$ constants revealed excellent linear correlation. The 8-aryl tricyclooctyl systems yielded a ${\rho}^{C+}$ value of -5.00 with r = 0.9962. Previous investigation of the 9-aryl-tricyclononyl systems gave a correlation coefficient of r = 0.9948 with a slope of ${\rho}^{C+}$ = -4.95. A fair parallelism exists between the results of $^{19}F-NMR $ studies and the change of ${\rho}^{C+}$ value in these cations. Consequently, it is established that the ${\rho}^{C+}$ value can be used to explain the mechanism of charge stabilization of the rigid cyclopropylcarbinyl cation such as tricyclo $[3.2.1.0^{2,7}]oct-8-yl$ cation.
