Electro-sterically stabilized gold suspensions were employed in a colorimetric system for the detection of strong acid in water. Using oleyamine and oleic acid as steric stabilizer in 1,2-dichlorobenzene, hydrophobic gold nanoparticles were first synthesized by a reduction reaction of gold salts and were then transferred into water with a cationic surfactant. When the hydrochlo- ric acid solution higher than critical concentration was injected, particles were quickly aggregated and precipitated, creating a clear solution from the colored suspension. The particles were stable against chemical etching by corrosive ion such as chloride. Critical concentration was dependent of the size and concentration of the particles. The minimum concentration of dramatic color change was at 5 ppm level of hydrochloric acid, in which the largest colloidal gold nanoparticles (54 nm) were used. Furthermore, because of their steric repulsive soft layer on particles, particles could be reused for further detection experiments after regeneration by the simple pH-neutralization and washing process.

Inhibitory effects of organic acids combined with modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) on foodborne pathogens, including $Escherichia$ $coli$ O157:H7, $Salmonella$ Typhimurium, and $Listeria$ $monocytogenes$, on cabbage were evaluated. The cabbage samples were inoculated with cocktails containing each of the three stains, treated with three different organic acids (acetic, lactic, and malic acids) for 10 min at room temperature, and then dried. Populations of $E.$ $coli$ O157:H7, $S.$ Typhimurium, and $L.$ $monocytogenes$ on cabbage were significantly reduced by treatment with 2% acetic, 1% lactic, and 2% malic acids, and their reduction levels were 1.9, 3.3, and $2.6\;log_{10}\;CFU/g$, respectively. Cabbage samples were packaged using four different methods (air, vacuum, $N_2$ gas, and $CO_2$ gas) following treatment with distilled water or 2% lactic acid for 10 min at room temperature and then stored at $10^{\circ}C$. Initial populations of $E.$ $coli$ O157:H7, $S.$ Typhimurium, and $L.$ $monocytogenes$ on cabbage were approximately 6.2, 6.7, and $5.1\;log_{10}\;CFU/g$, respectively, and treatment with 2% lactic acid for 10 min reduced the three pathogens by 3.1, 3.3, and $2.4\;log_{10}\;CFU/g$, respectively. As a result, inhibitory effects of the pathogens were significantly reduced by 2% lactic acid than when using distilled water. MAP was effective in maintaining reduced levels of pathogens during storage following the treatments. However, no significant differences in the levels of pathogens were observed among the samples packaged under four different gas conditions.

Pulmonary epithelioid hemangioendothelioma (PEH) is a rare, low-to-intermediate malignant tumor of endothelial origin. Computed tomography (CT) findings of PEH demonstrate multiple small bilateral nodules; however, to the best of our knowledge, there were no reports on PEH coexisting with other malignancies. Here, we reported on a case involving PEH in a patient with colon cancer and breast cancer which was misconceived as pulmonary meta- stasis. A 63-year-old woman who suffered from constipation for 2 weeks visited our hospital. Colonoscopy showed a large mass with obstruction on hepatic flexure. The histological diagnosis was adenocarcinoma of the ascending colon. Multiple nodules in both lungs and breast were observed on a chest CT scan. A core biopsy of a breast nodule was performed and a diagnosis of invasive ductal carcinoma of the left breast was made. Pulmonary nodules observed on the chest CT scan was considered as pulmonary metastasis from colon or breast cancer. Laparoscopic right hemicolectomy was performed. At the same time, wedge resection of the lung was performed and pathological diagnosis was PEH. Radiologic features of PEH were difficult to distinguish from lung metastasis. Therefore the author reported a rare case involving PEH in a patient with primary malignancy of colon and breast.

We report a case of a 57-year-old male who underwent a curative resection for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) with histological confi rmation of spontaneously necrotized tumor. Initial serum AFP level was 4,778ng/mL. Ultrasonography demonstrated a 3. 7cm hyperechoic mass in segment 6 of the liver and dynamic contrast-enhanced liver magnetic resonance imaging showed 3. 7×3. 1cm sized HCC. He was scheduled for curative surgical resection under the clinical diagnosis of an early stage HCC (Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer stage A). Without any intervention, the serum AFP level rapidly declined to 50 ng/mL over three weeks. He underwent curative wedge resection of segment 6 of the liver. Histology revealed a complete necrosis of the mass rimmed by infi amed fi brous capsule on a background of HBV-related cirrhosis with infi ltration of lymphoplasma cells. Exact pathophysiology underlying this event remains unknown. Among the proposed mechanisms of spontaneous neoplastic remission of HCC, circulatory disturbance and activation of host immune response offer the most scientifi c explanation for the complete histologic necrosis of HCC in the resected mass seen in our patient.

New hollow shell structured lithium trivanadate (LiV3O8 ) microspheres were synthesized by a spray drying method, and the effect of a vapor-phase-polypyrrole coating on the surface of this active material was studied. A thin and uniform coating layer could form by a simple vapor-phase-polymerization (VPP) method. The polypyrrole coating layer not only compensates for the low conductivity of the active material but also prevents its direct contact with the electrolyte and reduces vanadium dissolution. The LiV3O8 morphology and presence of the coating layer were confirmed using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. The electrochemical performance was analyzed using a battery testing system and impedance spectroscopy. The cycle performance of the Li-powder/polypyrrole-VPPcoated hollow shell LiV3O8 cell showed a higher capacity and greater capacity retention (LiV3O8: 160.80 mA h g (-1), 62.31%; coated LiV3O8: 206.55 mA h g (-1), 82.02%) in the range of 1.8-4.0 V at a 0.2 C-rate, even after 200 cycles. The rate capability at various current densities was also high. Further, it had a low charge transfer resistance, which remained low even after many cycles. Thus, the combined effect of hollow-shell-structure and polypyrrole-VPP coating, led LiV3O8 to its improved electrochemical performance. (C) 2018 The Electrochemical Society.
