The impact of a firm’s transparent manufacturing practices on women fashion shoppers

Amélia Brandão,Mahesh Gadekar,Francisco Cardoso 한국마케팅과학회 2018 Journal of Global Fashion Marketing Vol.9 No.4

Many fashion brands have responded to a transparent fashion industry to prevent unethical manufacturing practices. Firms are evaluating suppliers more carefully as fashion consumers are showing more concern and shopping with the social consciousness of sweatshops. Prior studies have examined the relationship between transparency and purchase intention; however, little is known about women fashion consumers. Because women show more participation in proenvironment behavior and activism than men and information about suppliers is highly valued, we examined women’s perception toward firms’ transparency of suppliers’ manufacturing practices. Structural modeling was employed for hypotheses testing for 411 women fashion consumers in a South-western European country. The proposed model provides the satisfactory explanation for transparency as an antecedent of brand trust among women consumers. The study reports that consumer attitude toward the brand acts as mediator between transparency and purchase intention. The results suggest that transparency has a significant and positive relationship with trust, attitude and word-of-mouth intention; however, it does not have significant relation to purchase intention. Trust has a positive and significant relation with word-of-mouth communication; however, it does not have a significant relation to purchase intention. Implications for researchers and marketers and direction for future studies are suggested.

Diagnosis of Bowel Endometriosis Using Endoscopic Ultrasound-guided Fine Needle Aspiration

        Ana Catarina Carvalho,Ricardo Cardoso,Francisco Pires,Sofia Ventura,Francisco Portela,Paula Ministro,Américo Silva 대한소화기학회 2023 대한소화기학회지 Vol.81 No.1

Endometriosis is a relatively common gynecological condition in women of reproductive age. The rectosigmoid region is the most commonly affected segment when the gastrointestinal tract is involved. A differential diagnosis of colorectal neoplasia is difficult because of the similar clinical, endoscopic, and radiology findings. A 42-year-old female presented with abdominal distention and was subsequently diagnosed with a large bowel obstruction in the rectum. A temporary colostomy was performed, and endoscopy revealed a rectal mass obstructing the rectum. The biopsy showed normal mucosa, and it was difficult to exclude rectal malignancies even after the imaging workup. Endoscopic ultrasound demonstrated a hypoechoic lesion below the rectal mucosa, and fine needle aspiration confirmed the diagnosis of bowel endometriosis. Bowel endometriosis is a challenging diagnosis. Endoscopic ultrasound- guided fine-needle aspiration is useful for acquiring adequate samples for histological confirmation and a definitive diagnosis of bowel endometriosis.

Carcass characteristics of lambs fed diets with increasing levels of crude glycerin

Caio Alves da Costa,Francisco Fernando Ramos de Carvalho,Adriana Guim,Gilcifran Prestes de Andrade,Daniel Barros Cardoso,Michel do Vale Maciel,Gabriela Goncalves da Silva,Andreza Guedes de Oliveira Na 아세아·태평양축산학회 2019 Animal Bioscience Vol.32 No.12

Objective: An experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of increasing levels of crude glycerin (0%, 6%, 12%, and 18%) used as a substitute for corn in lamb feed on the quantitative characteristics of the carcass. Methods: A total of 40 crossbred Santa Inês lambs that were four months old with a mean initial weight of 21.0±0.8 kg were randomly distributed in four treatments with ten replicates. The animals were slaughtered after 66 days of confinement. The effects of crude glycerin as a replacement for corn in the diet of the lambs on the carcass characteristics, commercial cut weight and yield and carcass measurements were studied. Results: There was an increasing linear effect for body weight at slaughter with the replacement of corn by crude glycerin. The dry matter and metabolizable energy intakes, weight of the empty body, hot carcass weight and cold carcass weight showed a quadratic effect, with maximum crude glycerin levels estimated at 10.9%, 9.8%, 10.83%, 11.78%, and 11.35%, respectively. The initial pH was not influenced by the replacement of corn for crude glycerin, while the final pH presented a quadratic effect. The other parameters of the carcass and the weights and yields of commercial cuts were not influenced. There was also no effect of the diets on carcass morphometric measurements, except for the thoracic perimeter and the carcass compactness index, which presented quadratic and linear effects, respectively. Conclusion: Crude glycerin can replace up to 18% of corn because it favours muscle tissue deposition without promoting changes in the main carcass characteristics of lambs.

Clinical Predictors of Excessive Daytime Sleepiness in Patients with Parkinson’s Disease

        Bruno Terra Junho,Arthur Kummer,Francisco Cardoso,Antonio Lucio Teixeira,Natalia Pessoa Rocha 대한신경과학회 2018 Journal of Clinical Neurology Vol.14 No.4

Background and Purpose Excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) is a common complaint among patients with Parkinson’s disease (PD). Several factors have been associated with EDS in PD, especially neuropsychiatric symptoms. This study aimed to determine the relationships between neuropsychiatric symptoms, sociodemographic and clinical parameters, and EDS in PD. Methods This cross-sectional study analyzed 85 patients with PD. All patients underwent socioeconomic and clinical data evaluations followed by a psychiatric interview and a neurological examination, including the assessment of sleep features. Patients were divided into two groups according to the presence or absence of EDS, which was defined as a score higher than 10 on the Epworth Sleepiness Scale. Binary logistic regression was performed in order to describe the predictors of EDS. Results We found that EDS affects 40% of PD patients and is associated with older age, restless legs syndrome, depressive and anxious symptoms, and worse sleep quality. In the multivariate analysis, older age, levodopa use, and worse sleep quality remained as significant predictors of EDS in PD. Conclusions Nighttime sleep problems, older age, and levodopa use are significantly associated with EDS in PD. A careful assessment and the management of sleep problems in PD patients might help to improve their quality of life.

Antibiofilm activity of the essential oil of citronella (Cymbopogon nardus) and its major component, geraniol, on the bacterial biofilms of Staphylococcus aureus

        Eveline Kelle Ursulino Pontes,Hider Machado Melo,Jose´ Walter Arau´ jo Nogueira,Nairley Cardoso Sa´ Firmino,Ma´rio Geraldo de Carvalho,Francisco Eduardo Araga˜o Catunda Ju´nior,Theodora Thays Arruda C 한국식품과학회 2019 Food Science and Biotechnology Vol.28 No.3

Medicinal plants with antimicrobial action havebeen investigated for uses against biofilms, among which,Cymbopogon nardus, citronella, stands out as a promisingspecies. The present study aims to evaluate the antimicrobialand antibiofilm action of the essential oil of C. nardus (EOCN) and geraniol on Gram-negative and positivebacteria from the determination of minimum inhibitoryconcentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentrationand inhibition of biofilms. In the results, the EOCNproduced a 41 mm halo on S. aureus, which was susceptiblewith MIC values of 0.5 and 0.25 mg/mL for theEOCN and geraniol respectively, both with bactericidaleffect. The antibiofilm action was confirmed, the EOCNand geraniol reduced the biofilm biomass of S. aureus up to100% between 0.5 and 4 mg/mL concentrations. Thereduction of cell viability was 0.25 and 1 mg/mL, ofEOCN and geraniol, respectively. EOCN and geraniol wereshown to be promising antibiotic against S. aureus.
