      • Changing Urban Landscapes: Maintaining Resilient and Regenerative Places

        Forster Ndubisi, Ph.D. 한국환경생태학회 2014 한국환경생태학회 학술대회지 Vol.2014 No.2

Population growth is increasing rapidly, worldwide. The world is becoming more urban as well. Increased population growth in metropolitan areas has intensified burdens on landscapes to accommodate our daily needs for food, work, shelter, and recreation. Rapid urbanization influences ecological conditions by altering the physical mosaic of the landscape. One noticeable effect, landscape fragmentation (the division of large parcels of land into smaller lots), separates, degrades, and homogenizes habitats; in turn, affecting biogeochemical cycling and resulting in the erosion of biodiversity. Sprawl and climate change (severe and unpredictable weather events) exacerbate the negative ecological effects of urban development. Despite an impressive array of urban spatial forms and structures, the complexity of these problems associated with rapid urbanization and climate change has made solutions increasingly difficult to attain. I offer a complementary spatial framework comprised of a set of principles to facilitate meaning dialogue in addressing these problems. At the core of these principles is the search for a pathway aimed at creating and maintaining adaptive and regenerative urban places. I explore supportive principles for creating such places. The principles include the design imperatives for change and uncertainty grounded on ecological science especially resiliency theory; affirmation of regional thinking and action; conservation of ecosystem services; purposeful adaptation and mitigation of climate change impacts; adoption of regenerative practices, as well as adaptive re-use, revitalization, and conservation. I conclude by affirming that the effectiveness of these principles in managing growth in urban landscapes lies in their synergistic effects.

A Visual and Contextual Comparative Study of the Work of Picasso and Chanel Towards an Understanding of the Overlaps Between Modern Art and Fashion

Forster, Samantha Vettese The Korean Society of Costume 2012 International journal of costume and fashion Vol.12 No.2

From the beginning of the twentieth century, 'Modernism' impacted and transformed art and clothing. Pablo Picasso and Gabrielle 'Coco' Chanel were two of the most central characters in Modernism working simultaneously in their disciplines. Picasso's innovations, particularly in abstract art and Chanel's fashion designs, that dramatically departed from the previous corseted and highly decorative styles, were so significant that they have left an influence on contemporary art and fashion. This study will compare their visual works and documented evidence of their motivations, within the context of their cultural backgrounds, to reveal meaning in the occurrences of overlaps. This approach has examined the historical, cultural background of the artist and designer's environment from different perspectives, adding to previous research in this area. Through this research, outcomes of the analysis have shown similarities and divergences in the wider genres of art and fashion and the practice of the artist and fashion designer. The reference list to this text, used in the survey, gives a comprehensive overview of pertinent publications disseminating Picasso and Chanel's visual works, oral perspectives and cultural impact.

Head computed tomography for elderly patients with acute altered mental status in the emergency setting: value for decision-making and predictors of abnormal findings

        Gerlier Camille,Forster Mélanie,Fels Audrey,Zins Marc,Chatellier Gilles,Ganansia Olivier 대한응급의학회 2022 Clinical and Experimental Emergency Medicine Vol.9 No.4

Objective This study evaluated the impact of head computed tomography (CT) on clinical decision-making about older adults with acute altered mental status (AMS) in the emergency department in terms of CT’s diagnostic yield, emergency department length of stay, and changes in medical strategy. It also attempted to find predictors of an acute imaging abnormality. Methods This was a 1-year, retrospective, single-center observational study of patients aged ≥75 years who underwent noncontrast head CT because of an isolated episode of AMS. The acute positive CT findings were ischemic strokes, hemorrhages, tumors, demyelinating lesions, hydrocephalus, and intracranial infections. Results A total of 594 CTs were performed, of which 38 (6.4%) were positive. The main etiology of AMS was sepsis (29.1%). Changes in medical strategy were more common in patients with a positive CT, and the major changes were ordering additional neuro exams (odds ratio [OR], 95.3; 95% confidence interval [CI], 38.4–233.8; P<0.001), adjusting treatments (OR, 12.2; 95% CI, 5.0–29.5; P<0.001), and referral to a neurologic unit (OR, 7.3; 95% CI, 3.0–17.5; P<0.01). Three factors were significantly associated with a positive outcome: Glasgow Coma Scale <13 (OR, 8.5; 95% CI, 2.3–28.9; P<0.001), head wound (OR, 3.1; 95% CI, 1.1–8.2; P=0.025), and dehydration (OR, 0.3; 95% CI, 0.1–0.4; P=0.021). For elderly patients with a Glasgow Coma Scale ≥13 and no head wound or clinical dehydration, the probability of a positive CT was 0.02 (95% CI, 0.01–0.04). Considering only those patients, the diagnostic yield fell to 1.7%.Conclusion In elderly patients, the causes of AMS are primarily extracerebral. Randomized clinical trials are needed to validate a clinical pathway for selecting patients who require emergent neuroimaging.

Direct Observation and Analysis of Spin Dependent Transport of Single Atoms in a 1D Optical Lattice

        Michal Karski,Leonid Forster,Andrea Alberti,Wolfgang Alt,Artur Widera,Dieter Meschede,최재민 한국물리학회 2011 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.59 No.41

We have directly observed spin-dependent transport of single cesium atoms in a 1D optical lattice. A superposition of two circularly polarized standing waves is generated from two counter propagating, linearly polarized laser beams. Rotation of one of the polarizations by π causes displacement of the σ^+- and σ^--lattices by one lattice site. Unidirectional transport over several lattice sites is achieved by rotating the polarization back and forth and flipping the spin after each transport step. We have analyzed the transport efficiency over 10 and more lattice sites, and discussed and quantified relevant error sources.

Q Learning Based Adaptive Protocol Parameters for WSNs

Karunanayake, Piumika Nilangani,Könsgen, Andreas,Weerawardena, Thushara,Forster, Anna 한국통신학회 2023 Journal of communications and networks Vol.25 No.1

Wireless sensor networks (WSN) are widely used formulti-disciplinary applications. According to the requirementsand the goal of the application, the network is designed andthe protocol is tuned to obtain the best performance of theWSN. In real world applications, all nodes in the networkhave a common protocol parameter set, irrespective of theirposition in the network. In several experiments with multihopsensor networks, we observed that individual nodes performdifferently depending on the protocol parameter values. With theobservation the question was raised whether the performanceof the network can be improved by using tuned parametersets for each individual node in the network. Tuning protocolparameters for each node manually is tedious and may not bepractical for large number of nodes. As a solution, adaptiveprotocol parameters are introduced using reinforcement learning. The learning algorithm gradually approaches an optimal set ofprotocol parameter values for each and every node during theruntime resulting in average improved network performance with13.44% and 29.41% compared to networks with static commonparameter sets in a network of 20 and 30 nodes respectivelyin simulation environment. The performance of the adaptiveprotocol is validated using real testbed with 10 nodes andthe performance improvement is 16.21%. With the simulationresults it was observed that networks with higher number ofnodes obtain more performance gain using the adaptive protocolalgorithm compared to networks with lower of nodes.
