        Synthesis and characterization of mercury telluride nanoparticles using a new precursor

        HgTe nanoparticles have been synthesized through a simple hydrothermal reduction approach using [NN0-bis(salicylaldehydo)ethylenediamine]mercury(II), [Hg(salen)] complex, as a new precursor. HgTe nanoparticles with size about 15–25 nm was prepared. The products were also characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL), X-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectra. Effects of temperature, reaction time and reductant agent on the morphology, the particle sizes and the phase of the final products have been investigated.

        Hydrothermal synthesis and characterization of HgS nanostructures assisted by inorganic precursor

        In this paper, HgS nanostructures were synthesized from the reaction of N,N0-(disalicylidene-1,4-diaminobutane) mercury complex, [Hg(salbn)] as a novel precursor, via hydrothermal method. Thismethod is facile and provides an appropriate condition for the preparation of structures with variousmorphologies. In this study, the effect of different parameters such as type of sulfur sources, reactiontime and type of alkaline source on the morphology and the particle size were studied. The resultsindicated that the type of sulfur source plays an important role in the morphology of as-synthesized HgS. The synthesized materials were characterized by means of X-ray diffraction, transmission electronmicroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, infrared spectrum and energy dispersive X-ray analysis. Flower-like HgS microcrystals were obtained by using TGA as sulfur source. The obtained results arediscussed in detail.

      • Are So-Called Cancer-Testis Genes Expressed Only in Testis?

        Cancer-testis (CT) antigens are a group of tumor-associated antigens with restricted expression in normal tissues except for testis and expression in a wide variety of tumor tissues. This pattern of expression makes them suitable targets for immunotherapy as well as potential biomarkers for early detection of cancer. However, some genes attributed to this family are now known to be expressed in other normal tissues which put their potential applications in immunotherapy and cancer detection under question. Here we analyzed expression of two previously known CT antigens, RHOXF2 and PIWIL2, in AML patients versus normal donors and found no significant difference in the expression of these genes between the two groups. As these two genes showed expression in normal leukocytes, their expression pattern seems to be wider than to be attributed to the CT gene family. Future research should focus on the expression profiles of so called CT antigens to find those with more testis specific expression.

        Quercus Brantii Lindl. Vaginal Douche Versus Clotrimazole on Vaginal Candidiasis - A Randomized Clinical Trial -

        Objectives: Vaginal Candidiasis with an approximate prevalence of 30% is the second cause of vaginal infections. Antifungal azole is the first treatment for Vaginal Candidiasis; however, some side effects have been reported for this chemical medicine. Based on the antifungal activity of Inner Stratum of Quercus Brantii (Q. Brantii), the aim of our study was to compare the effects of vaginal douche of Q. Brantii extract and clotrimazole on vaginal candidiasis symptoms before and after the treatments, in women. Methods: 89 non-pregnant women with positive KOH test which is capable of identifying the presence of hyphae and mycelium by adding KOH (10%), and a positive vaginal candidiasis culture were randomly divided into two experimental groups, using permuted block randomization method. One group received clotrimazole vaginal cream (1%) and the other group received vaginal douche of Q. Brantii extract. Groups were treated for 7 days and KOH tests and cultures were evaluated again. Data were analyzed via chi-square and independent t-test, using SPSS software. Results: According to the results, there were no significant differences between experimental groups for demographic characteristics like age (p=0.403), BMI (p=0.911), educational levels (p=0.862) and contraceptive methods (p=0.702). Moreover, significant differences were seen in vaginal discharge between the groups after the treatments (P=0.043). Conclusion: The results suggested that the therapeutic effect of vaginal douche of Q. Brantii extract was approximately similar to that of clotrimazole vaginal cream.

        Vitamin C restores ovarian follicular reservation in a mouse model of aging

        Ovarian aging is related to the reduction of oocyte quality and ovarian follicles reservation leading to infertility. Vitamin C is a natural antioxidant which may counteract with adverse effects of aging in the ovary. The aim of this study was to evaluate the possible effect of vitamin C on NMRI mice ovarian aging according to the stereological study. In this experimental study, 36 adult female mice (25–30 g) were divided into two groups: control and vitamin C. Vitamin C (150 mg/kg/day) were administered by oral gavage for 33 weeks. Six animals of each group were sacrificed on week 8, 12, and 33, and right ovary samples were extracted for stereology analysis. Our data showed that the total volume of ovary, cortex, medulla and corpus luteum were significantly increased in vitamin C group in comparison to the control groups (P≤0.05). In addition, the total number of primordial, primary, secondary, and antral follicles as well as granulosa cells were improved in vitamin C group in compared to the control groups (P≤0.05). No significant difference was observed in total volume of oocytes in antral follicles between control and vitamin C groups. Our data showed that vitamin C could notably compensate undesirable effects of ovarian aging in a mouse model.
