Receptive and productive vocabulary learning using a word list in L2
Jeon,Eonhee,Shin,Yousun 한국초등영어교육학회 2011 초등영어교육 Vol.17 No.1
The study aimed at determining the relative efficacy of two different learning conditions - receptive learning and productive learning - on different types of retention tests and the degree of retention over time. Korean elementary school learners in the 3rd grade studying English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learned two sets of target words receptively and then productively. Then they took two different types of retention tests - a receptive retention test and a productive retention over a period of two weeks. The results of the study indicated that the best results on receptive learning were obtained when learners took the immediate receptive retention test, and the best results on productive learning were obtained when learners took the delayed receptive test. In addition, retention as a result of productive learning led to larger gains than retention as a result of receptive learning, suggesting that productive learning of words might be more effective for retention.
