The Impact of Biochemical Oxygen Demand Emissions on Malaysia`s Manufacturing Productivity Growth

Elsadig Musa Ahmed 연세대학교 동서문제연구원 2007 Global economic review Vol.36 No.4

This study examines the impact of organic water pollutant biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) emissions on Malaysia`s manufacturing sector productivity growth and the factors that determine its growth. Exclusion of externalities such as BOD pollutant emissions created a deficiency in growth accounting models as those BOD pollutant emissions were internalized in order to calculate the green total factor productivity (TFP). The results show a slowdown in the contribution of TFP growth and a negative impact of BOD pollutant emissions produced by the sector on productivity growth in general and TFP growth in particular in comparison with other productivity indictors of the sector.

Foreign Direct Investment Intensity Effects on TFP Intensity of ASEAN 5 Plus 2

ELSADIG MUSA AHMED 경제연구소 2008 Journal of Economic Development Vol.33 No.2

This study aims to investigate the role of foreign direct investment (FDI) intensity through decomposition of labour productivity growth into contributions of capital deepening, increased usage of foreign direct investment (FDI) intensity, and the simultaneous contribution of the quality of these factors. This has expressed as the contribution of total factor productivity (TFP) intensity growth in achieving productivity driven growth in ASEAN 5 (Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand) plus 2 (China and South Korea). This study claims to fill in the gaps of previous studies by developing applications of intensive growth theory and introducing the TFP intensity (TFP per unit of labour). The results show that the productivity growth of ASEAN 5 plus China and South Korea is input driven, however, South Korean Model has constructed companies such as Daewoo, Samsung and LG that competed globally. The study also finds that the impact of FDI intensity is positive with slight contribution to TFP intensity growth.

Productivity Growth Analysis in OECD Countries

Geeta Krishnasamy,Elsadig Musa Ahmed 한국경제연구학회 2009 Korea and the World Economy Vol.10 No.2

This paper adopts the metafrontier framework using the Malmquist Productivity Index (MPI) to measure and compare the productivity growth performance of countries in Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) under different technologies. This paper presents a number of useful decompositions of the metafrontier-MPI (MMPI) which can provide useful insights into the level of catch-up achieved by different groups of countries relative to the OECD frontier as a whole. This study uses a cross-country data set covering 26 countries in OECD for the period 1980-2008. These countries are grouped into three regions, namely, the Americas, Asia-Pacific, and Europe, in order to analyze the technological gap and catch-up of each of these regions with respect to the OECD technology. Using the DEAP software, we find that, the gap between the Asian-Pacific group frontier and the OECD metafrontier is decreasing, which posits that the Asian group is experiencing technological progress at a faster rate than the metafrontier which represents the OECD technology. On the other hand, the European technology has already achieved a certain level of progress in technology which is why the rate of growth is slower compared to the metafrontier. Meanwhile, the mean efficiency score for the Americas region is particularly low in 1985-1988 period, suggesting technology and knowledge diffusion within region might help to improve efficiency levels.

The Relationship Between Islamic Microfinance and Women Entrepreneurship: A Case Study in Malaysia

Md Amirul ISLAM,Seethaletchumy THAMBIAH,Elsadig Musa AHMED 한국유통과학회 2021 The Journal of Asian Finance, Economics and Busine Vol.8 No.5

This article aims to examine the intention to use Islamic microfinance by women entrepreneurs in Malaysia. Microfinance plays a significant role in developing the modern economy in the world by alleviating poverty, creating employment, and empowering women in society. The framework was built on Innovation and Diffusion Theory and Planned Behaviour Theory. The present study has adopted a quantitative research method, which focused on cross-sectional research design to address this problem. Primary data was collected and processed by using a 5-point Likert scale. For this research, a total of 178 questionnaires were distributed among women owners of micro-enterprises in Malaysia by using area collection sampling. To analyze the data, the SmartPLS 3 software package was used. This study developed seven hypotheses, all which have been supported both directly, indirectly, and mediated. This result will be beneficial in assisting policymakers, academics and future researchers who must consider the supported variables. Thus, the study contributes to developing a unique framework to assist women-owned micro-enterprise to success. It will be beneficial for practitioners to enhance women micro-enterprise success rate as well. Indeed, all of the grounded methods have implications both in theory and their main application for the business in SMEs.

Do Women's Attitudes Matter in Acceptance of Islamic Microfinance? Evidence from Malaysia

Md Amirul ISLAM,Muhammad Salah Uddin,Seethaletchumy THAMBIAH,Elsadig Musa Ahmed,Md Abdur Rauf 대외경제정책연구원 2023 East Asian Economic Review Vol.27 No.1

The study aims to investigate the factors pursuing the women entrepreneurs to accept Islamic microfinance (IMF) in urban and rural areas of Malaysia. For this purpose, the study applies the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) and Innovation and Diffusion Theory to explain Islamic microfinance adoption. Using the structural equation model (SEM) with primary data collected from 384-woman entrepreneurs in Malaysia, the current study uses a 5-point Likert scale. On the basis of theory and collected data, the seven hypotheses are developed. All hypotheses are validated by both directly and indirectly, as well as through a mediating factor. Among the factors, knowledge about IMF and subjective norms significantly influence the acceptance of IMF. On the other hand, the perceived complexity does not show any substantial relationship to the acceptance of IMF. This outcome will be helpful in supporting policymakers, academics, and future studies and must take into account the supported factors. Therefore, the study contributes to develop an innovative framework, to create self-employment for women entrepreneurs.
