        Electrochemical and Spectroscopic Study on the Corrosion of Ti–5Al and Ti–5Al–5Cu in Chloride Solutions

        In this study, manufacturing of Ti–5Al and Ti–5Al–5Cu alloys were accomplished employing mechanical alloying technique. The corrosion resistance in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution of Ti–5Al and Ti–5Al–5Cu alloys was investigated using cyclicpolarization (CPP), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and chronoamperometric current–time measurements. The corroded surfaces of Ti–5Al and Ti–5Al–5Cu were examined by the use of a scanning electron microscopy and energydispersive X-ray spectroscopy. It is found that Ti–5Al suffers both uniform and pitting corrosion, particularly with prolongingthe time of exposure period in the chloride solution. While, the addition of Cu, Ti–5Al–5Cu alloy, increases the intensity ofuniform corrosion and decreases the probability of pitting attack. Prolonging the immersion time to 48 h before measurementdecreases the corrosion of Ti–5Al alloy, while increases the corrosion of Ti–5Al–5Cu.

        Design, Synthesis, and Antibacterial Activity of Spiropyrimidinone Derivatives Incorporated Azo Sulfonamide Chromophore for Polyester Printing Application

        We designed and developed a novel series of bioactive disperse dyes by conjugation of spirocyclic 2-thiopyrimidine scaffold with aryl or sulfa drug moieties in the same construct through azo linker to take advantage of thebioactive character of both motifs. The target molecules were simply approached on a gram scale via the diazocoupling ofspirocyclic 2-thiouracil 1 with aryl diazonium chloride derivatives to afford the heterocyclic azo-disperse dyes 4a-e inexcellent yield. These azo dyes were effectively utilized to make pastes for silkscreen printing of polyester fabrics. The colorcharacteristics of the dyes and their fastness properties including washing, rubbing, perspiration, sublimation, and lightfastness were also investigated. The antimicrobial activity of the produced dyes 4a-e was evaluated against some Grampositiveand Gram-negative bacteria, and the results revealed that 4d was more active than the standard drug cefoperazoneagainst the Gram-positive bacteria S. aureus. The antibacterial efficacy of the treated fabrics has also been investigatedrevealing that the dyed fabric 4b was found to have a potent inhibition on B. cereus (93 %), and against E. coli with areduction of (90 %).

        Electrochemical investigations on the corrosion inhibition of aluminum by 3-amino-1,2,4-triazole-5-thiol in naturally aerated stagnant seawater

        The corrosion behavior of aluminum and its inhibition by 3-amino-1,2,4-triazole-5-thiol (ATAT) in naturally aerated stagnant Arabian Gulf water was reported. The work was carried out using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), cyclic potentiodynamic polarization (CPP), and potentiostatic current–time (CCT) measurements. EIS data indicated that ATAT decreased the corrosion of Al by increasing the solution and polarization resistances, the impedance of the interface and the maximum degree of phase angle. ATAT was also found to decrease the cathodic, anodic, and corrosion currents and corrosion rate as well as increase the polarization resistance of Al as confirmed by the CPP and CCT measurements.

        Effects of sintering temperature and graphite addition on the mechanical properties of aluminum

        The effects of different sintering temperatures, namely 400, 500 and 600 8C, on the mechanical properties of four aluminum–graphite alloys were reported. Different percentages of exfoliated graphite nanoplatelets particles (xGnP) were added to pure aluminum by using the powder metallurgy technique to produce Al-0 wt.%xGnP, Al-1 wt.%xGnP, Al-3 wt.%xGnP, and Al-5 wt.%xGnP. The density,fracture surface, compression, and hardness measurements were carried out to report the mechanical properties of the different aluminum–xGnP alloys. Combined data indicated that the Vickers hardness and compressive strength increase, on the other hand, the density decreases with increasing the graphite content in the Al alloys.

        Mechanical and corrosion resistant properties of ATIG welded 2205 duplex stainless-steel via different fluxes

        In this study, 6 mm thick duplex stainless-steel grade 2205 plate was welded by active tungsten inert gas (ATIG) using different oxide fluxes and the effect of optimal oxide fluxes on structure, mechanical and corrosion properties was systematically analyzed and discussed. Initially, fourteen oxides were tested (SiO 2 , TiO 2 , ZnO, MnO 2 , Cr 2 O 3 , Fe 2 O 3 , ZrO 2 , SrO, CaO, MoO 3 , V 2 O 5 , Mn 2 O 3 , Co 2 O 3 and MgO). Among these, three candidate oxides, i.e., SiO 2 , Ti 2 O and ZnO were selected for further evaluation based on the depth ratio, depth-to-width (D/W), and ultimate tensile strength (UTS) results. By using Minitab 17 software, optimal combinations of these fluxes for maximum penetrations were estimated. The obtained results revealed that the optimal flux composition is 76 % SiO 2 -24 % ZnO. The results showed that the depth attained by the optimized flux is 2.9 times greater than tungsten inert gas (TIG) weld. The D/W ratio was also improved 3.7 times when contrasted with typical TIG welding. The energy absorbed in fusion zone in the case of ATIG weld is greater when contrasted with TIG weld. It was found that the weld bead obtained with optimal flux combination in ATIG weld can better withstand sudden loads. The obtained UTS value (810 MPa) for ATIG weld was close to parent metal (825 MPa) and greater than the weld produced by TIG welding (766 MPa). However, the corrosion resistant property was found to be slightly decreased for metal welded with ATIG as compared to metal welded by using TIG. These results give a comprehensive guideline for further investigations on TIG welding of 2205 duplex stainless-steel.
