Antioxidant, Mutagenic, and Antimutagenic Activity of Frozen Fruits

        Patricia D.S. Spada,Gabrielle Gianna Nunes de Souza,Giovana Vera Bortolini,Joao A.P. Henriques,Mirian Salvador 한국식품영양과학회 2008 Journal of medicinal food Vol.11 No.1

Many studies have focused on the effect of fresh fruits on the risk of developing cancer and other diseases in-volved with reactive species and free radicals. The intake of frozen fruits has spread widely in the last years, but, until now, their biological activity is not completely known. In this study, 23 samples of frozen fruits were analyzed for their nutritionalcomposition, total polyphenols, total carotenoids, and vitamin C content. Antioxidant, mutagenic, and antimutagenic effectswere also evaluated. Antioxidant assays included 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical (DPPH.) scavenging activity and de-termination of superoxide dismutase (SOD)- and catalase (CAT)-like activities. Mutagenic and antimutagenic evaluations wereperformed in eukaryotic cells of Saccharomyces cerevisiae yeast. Most samples (74%) showed antioxidant activity similar tovitamin C in the DPPH.assay, and this activity was positively correlated (r. 0.366; P. .01) with carotenoid contents. Allsamples showed CAT-like activity. SOD-like activity was detected in 56% of samples assayed. Only four fruits (acai, cashewapple, kiwi fruit, and strawberry) showed mutagenic activity when tested in high (5%, 10%, and 15% [wt/vol]) concentra-tions. Twelve samples presented antimutagenic effects against hydrogen peroxide, and this effect was positively correlatedwith CAT-like activity (r. 0.400; P. .01). Evaluation of polyphenols, carotenoids, and ascorbic acid showed considerablelevels of these compounds in frozen fruits, even after freezing. These data suggest that frozen fruits contribute to the pre-vention of biological damages.

Sugarcane bagasse as exclusive roughage for dairy cows in smallholder livestock system

Gleidiana Amelia Pontes de Almeida,Marcelo de Andrade Ferreira,Janaina de Lima Silva,Juana Catarina Cariri Chagas,Antonia Sherlanea Chaves Veras,Leonardo Jose Assis de Barros,Gledson Luiz Pontes de Al 아세아·태평양축산학회 2018 Animal Bioscience Vol.31 No.3

Objective: The study aimed to evaluate sugarcane bagasse as roughage in lactating cow on feed intake, digestibility, ingestive behavior, milk production and composition, and microbial protein synthesis. Methods: Ten Girolando cows at initial body weight of 450±25.6 kg and at 143.7±30.7 days in milk were assigned in two 5×5 Latin square designs. Five 21-day experimental periods were adopted (1° to 14-day: diets adaptation period; 15° to 21-day: data collection and sampling period). The diets consisted of four different levels of sugarcane bagasse (45%, 50%, 55%, and 60%) and a control diet, commonly adopted in the region, based on spineless cactus (25% sugarcane bagasse), formulated to meet 12 kg/d milk yield. Results: The dry matter (DM), organic matter (OM), and total digestible nutrients intakes and DM and OM digestibilities observed for 45% and 50% bagasse inclusion were similar to control diet, while that 55% and 60% bagasse inclusion were lower. Cows fed control diet, and bagasse diets of 45%, and 50% levels had the nutritional requirements attended, that guaranteed 12 kg/d of milk yield. The crude protein intake and digestibility of cows fed 45%, 50%, and 55% of bagasse inclusion were similar to control diet. The neutral detergent fiber (NDF) intake and digestibility differ for all bagasse diets related to control diet, while the non-fiber carbohydrates intake and digestibility for cows fed 45% of bagasse were similar for control diet. The intakes and digestibilities of nutrients decreased linearly in function of bagasse inclusion; NDF and indigestible NDF intakes did not vary. The ruminating time, feeding and rumination efficiency, microbial protein synthesis and milk yield decreased linearly with sugarcane bagasse inclusion. Conclusion: Sugarcane bagasse decreases milk production; however, its inclusion level in between 45% to 50% associated to concentrate could replace diets based on spineless cactus for crossbred dairy cow's producing 12 kg/d of milk.

THE ROLE OF TELEVISION IN HUMAN GROWTH

Vera, Jose M. de 서강대학교 생명문화연구원 1994 생명연구 Vol.2 No.-

One of the most important tasks of family and society is to transmit to its younger members the values on which a particular society is based. Adulthood is reached when a person has assimilated these values and can act on his own even if he decides to challenge them. This long process of socialization starts within the family when parents tell the children that it is wrong to lie, to fight with his brother, to waste food to inconvenience others, to be selfish. On the positive aspect, the family instill into the younger members the need to cooperate with others, to eat with good manners, to work diligently, to respect others, to be generous, kind and compassionate, The religious dimension of human life is, unfortunately, absent from the initiation provided by parents, but it is obvious that in a way understandable to children, they should be introduced to the spiritual times this process of leading the youth on the path to become full-fledged members of society was complemented by the education received in the school. While imparting new knowledge, the school was agent to reinforce acceptable behavior and clarification of values.

Transmission electron microscopy for characterization of acrosomal damage after Percoll gradient centrifugation of cryopreserved bovine spermatozoa

        Letícia Z. Oliveira,Vera F. M. Hossepian de Lima,Marcelo A. Levenhagen,Ricarda M. dos Santos,Terezinha I. Assumpção,José O. Jacomini,André F. C. de Andrade,Rubens P. de Arruda,Marcelo E. Beletti 대한수의학회 2011 Journal of Veterinary Science Vol.12 No.3

The objective of this study was to characterize acrosomal ultrastructure following discontinuous Percoll gradient centrifugation of cryopreserved bovine sperm. Semen was collected from six bulls of different breeds and three ejaculates per bull were evaluated. Frozen semen samples were thawed and the acrosomal region of sperm cells was evaluated by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) before (n = 18) and after (n = 18) Percoll centrifugation. The evaluation of 20 sperm heads from each of the 36 samples analyzed ensured that a large number of cells were investigated. The data were subjected to analysis of variance at a level of significance of 5%. Percoll centrifugation reduced the percentage of sperm exhibiting normal acrosomes (from 61.77 to 30.24%), reduced the percentage of sperm presenting atypical acrosome reactions (from 28.38 to 4.84%) and increased the percentage of sperm exhibiting damage in the acrosome (from 6.14 to 64.26%). The percentage of sperm with typical acrosome reactions was not significantly different before (3.70%) and after (0.67%) centrifugation. TEM distinguished four different types of acrosomal status and enabled ultrastructural characterization of acrosomal injuries. The percentage of sperm exhibiting normal acrosomes decreased and damage in the acrosome was the most frequent acrosomal injury with the Percoll gradient centrifugation protocol utilized.

Nausea Control by Needling at Acupuncture Point Neiguan (PC6) During an Intraoral Impression-Taking Procedure

Vera Lucia Rasera Zotelli,Ca´ssia Maria Grillo,Maria da Luz Rosa´rio de Sousa 사단법인약침학회 2014 Journal of Acupuncture & Meridian Studies Vol.7 No.6

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of acupuncture point PC6 (Neiguan) in controlling nausea during intraoral impression taking. This study was con- ducted in Piracicaba, Sa ˜o Paulo, Brazil. The sample consisted of 33 adult volunteers with nausea, who were randomly divided into control and study groups, and treated with non- penetrating sham acupuncture and real acupuncture, respectively, at acupoint PC6. The two groups had two maxillary impressions taken, one prior to acupuncture and the other after acupuncture. The nausea assessment was made using the visual analog scale, Gagging Severity Index (GSI), and Gagging Prevention Index. Volunteers’ expectation that nausea would be reduced through acupuncture was also assessed. For statistical analysis, we used the t test and the Spearman correlation (p < 0.05). When assessed by Gagging Severity Index/Gagging Prevention Index, nausea was reduced in the real acupuncture group (p < 0.01). In the visual analog scale assessment, similar reductions of nausea were noted in both groups (p > 0.05). No correlation existed between the expected and the actual reductions in nausea. Our results indicate that acupoint PC6 was effective for con- trolling nausea during the maxillary impression-taking procedure. Patients’ expectation did not influence the results.

Patterns of Energy Imbalance of the Meridians in Patients with Temporomandibular Dysfunction

        Vera L. Rasera Zotelli,Ca´ssia M. Grillo,Maria L. Bressiani Gil,Ronaldo S. Wada,Jorge E. Sato,Maria da Luz R. de Sousa 사단법인약침학회 2018 Journal of Acupuncture & Meridian Studies Vol.11 No.1

Temporomandibular dysfunction (TMD) is a set of changes that affects the muscles of mastication, temporomandibular joint, teeth, and associated periodontal and orofacial structures. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, the imbalance of energy (Qi) circulating in the acupuncture meridians is always the primary etiologic cause of any physical manifestation. The aim of this study was to describe the patterns of Qi imbalance in patients with TMD by means of an objective measurement. The clinical study was conducted at the Piracicaba Dental School (FOP/Unicamp), in Piracicaba-SP, Brazil. We evaluated 40 adult volunteers with TMD. The Qi measurement was carried out by the researcher using the Ryodoraku method using 24 points representing the 12 acupuncture meridians: LU9 (Taiyuan), PC7 (Daling), HT7 (Shemen), SI5 (Yanggu), TE4 (Yangchi), LI5 (Yangxi), SP3 (Taibai), LR3 (Taichong), KI3 (Taixi), BL64 (Jinggu), GB40 (Qiuxu), and ST42 (Chongyang). The average total Qi of 40 volunteers (21.7 μA ± 1.5), was below the normal range (40–60 μA) and was classified as deficiency of Qi (empty). The coupled meridians that showed the highest Qi imbalance were the kidney (29.4 μA ± 2.8) and bladder (13.8 μA ± 1). The Qi planes with greatest imbalance were the Shao Yang and Shao Yin. In conclusion, volunteers with TMD presented a pattern of Qi deficiency, and the most prevalent imbalance patterns identified were in the kidney and bladder coupled meridians and in the energetic planes Shao Yin (heart/kidney) and Shao Yang (triple energizer/gall bladder).

Acupuncture Effect on Pain, Mouth Opening Limitation and on the Energy Meridians in Patients with Temporomandibular Dysfunction: A Randomized Controlled Trial

        Vera LR. Zotelli,Cassia M. Grillo,Maria LB. Gil,Ronaldo S. Wada,Jorge E. Sato,Maria da Luz Rosario de Sousa 사단법인약침학회 2017 Journal of Acupuncture & Meridian Studies Vol.10 No.5

Temporomandibular disorders (TMD), recognized as the most common conditions of chronic orofacial pain, have a multifactorial etiology. Acupuncture can help to relieve the pain and discomfort associated with these conditions, because it can rebalance the energy (Qi) circulating in the meridians. The aim of the study was to verify the effectiveness of acupuncture in treating the pain; mouth opening limitation, and energy circulating in the meridians of patients with TMD of muscular or mixed origin. This was a controlled, randomized, double-blind clinical trial conducted at the Piracicaba Dental School (FOP/Unicamp), in Piracicaba SP, Brazil. The Treatment Group received acupuncture with real penetration of the needle, and the Placebo Group received a sham treatment without needle penetration. The acupoints used were: ST6, ST7, SI18, GV20, GB20, BL10, and LI4, during treatment performed for four weekly sessions. The TMD and mouth opening were evaluated according to the Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders (RDC). The measurements of the energy at the meridians were performed by the Ryodoraku method, before and after acupuncture in all of the sessions in both groups. The results showed no decrease in pain in the Treatment Group when compared with the Placebo Group (p Z 0.2261). There was no increase in the oral opening limit in the Treatment Group compared with the Placebo Group (p > 0.05). Regarding the energy levels, after acupuncture, there was a decrease in Yang energy in all sessions (p < 0.05), in both groups, however, only real acupuncture was effective in maintaining the Yin energy average throughout the four sessions, with significant difference between groups (p Z 0.0198). In conclusion, volunteers with TMD presented a pattern of energy deficiency and the most prevalent imbalance patterns identified were in the meridians coupled to the kidney and bladder, and in the Shao Yin (heart/kidney) and Shao Yang (triple energizer/gall bladder) energetic planes. The acupuncture points used were equally effective in reducing pain in both groups; increasing the unassisted mouth opening limitation without pain in the Treatment Group, and were also effective in preserving the Yin energy in the Treatment Group. The Yang energy decreased equally in both groups.

A Case Report on the Effect of Sham Acupuncture

Vera Lucia Rasera Zotelli,Cássia Maria Grillo,Maria da Luz Rosário de Sousa 사단법인약침학회 2016 Journal of Acupuncture & Meridian Studies Vol.9 No.5

When nausea, an extremely unpleasant symptom, is experienced during dental treatment, it generates disorders and obstacles for both the patient and the professional, compromising the good quality of dental care. Clinical studies have confirmed the antiemetic action of acupuncture and shown its use for the treatment of nausea and vomiting. In the scientific literature there are several recent studies that address the placebo effect of acupuncture. The aim of this manuscript is to present a case report of a 46-year-old Caucasian male patient, who had severe symptoms of nausea while undergoing dental care. Treatment with sham acupuncture (acupuncture simulation) obtained a positive result of nausea prevention. We will discuss three possible hypotheses concerning this result: (1) there was action of Deqi; (2) high expectations of the patient; and (3) association with specific learned response. The patient in this case report received nonpenetrating sham acupuncture at acupoint Neiguan (PC6), which resulted in the complete remission of nausea during an intra-oral impression-taking procedure, but it is unclear whether the placebo effect was triggered by the action of Deqi, the high expectations of the patient, an association with a learned response, or by the interaction of all these factors.

Impaired Physical Performance and Clinical Responses after a Recreational Bodybuilder’s Self-Administration of Steroids: A Case Report

Katherine Veras,Fernando Lopes Silva-Junior,Adriano Eduardo Lima-Silva,Fernando Roberto De-Oliveira,Flávio Oliveira Pires 대한남성과학회 2015 The World Journal of Men's Health Vol.33 No.3

We reported clinical and physical responses to 7 weeks of anabolic-androgenic steroid (AAS) self-administration in a male recreational bodybuilder. He was self-administrating a total of 3,250 mg of testosterone when his previous and current clinical and physical trials records were revisited. Body shape, performance, and biochemistry results were clustered into three phases labeled PRE (before the self-use), POST I (immediately at the cessation of the 7-week administration), and POST II (12 weeks after the cessation). Elevated testosterone and estradiol levels were observed in the POST I phase, while hepatic and renal functions remained altered in the POST II phase. Body mass and body fat percentages increased throughout the three phases. When adjusted according to body mass, drops in aerobic and anaerobic power and capacity (2.1% to 12.9%) were observed across the phases. This case report shows that overall performance decreased when a bodybuilding practitioner self-administered AAS.
