        현행 저작권법과 유럽지침에 의한 데이터베이스 보호의 문제점

        Information and databases are vital to science, the legal system, education and so forth. Science and information technology rely immensely on unhindered access to databases. Important issues exist in relation to the regulation of access to databases. For example, current attempts to protect database by exclusive proprietary rights, expanding the scope of intellectual property (IP) protection to include uncopyrightable facts, will finally hinder the access to databases. This article attempts to provide legislative direction that would provide limited protection of databases and a return on investment as an incentive to create databases. Thus, it tries to find a way to preclude essential scientific data from privatising. This article provides the legislative history of the European Database Directive. By highlighting the similarity between, and problems of, the Directive and the current Copyright Act, the author tries to justify introduction of basic principles in an appropriate model for the legal protection of databases, that is based on liability regime. In the course of justification, principles, implications and examples of a liability regime are explored.

        영어 학습 신념, 동기 및 전략 간 관계 분석 연구

        The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationships of college students′ beliefs, motivations and strategies on English learning. For the purpose, this study focuses on first, the aspect of the correlation among the three variables, second, the aspect of the correlation among the subcategories of the variables, third, the aspect of the cause and effect relation. The findings of this study are as follows: First, all the variables have influence one another, among which the correlation between learning beliefs and motivations is the highest. Second, most of the sub-elements in learning beliefs, motivations and strategies have correlation with a few exceptions. Third, the cause and effect relation indicates that students’ beliefs have more influence on motivations than strategies do. Meanwhile, motivations have some impact on using strategies, but no meaningful influence is observed between beliefs and strategies. Lastly, learning motivations influence learning beliefs to some extent whereas the use of learning strategies has nothing to do with students’ beliefs on learning (Mokwon University).

      • The Pluripotency Mechanism Profiling of Bovine Embryo-derived Stem cells by Microarray Analysis

        To have a better understanding of pluripotency, whole gene expression of embryo-derived stem cells (EdSCs) in bovine species was investigated. EdSCs were established from the embryos produced by in vitro fertilization, parthenogenesis and somatic cell nuclear transfer. Then, the microarray was performed and analyzed. Differently expressed genes (DEGs) were also confirmed by Real-time PCR. Among 10,203 DEGs, little difference was found in gene expression among three kinds of EdSCs. Conversely, all EdSCs have an immensely different gene expression when compared with somatic cells, consistent with scatter plat results. To investigate shared pathways for pluripotency in all EdSCs, 2,415 co-DEGs were identified which compared with somatic cells. By KEGG database, there were 54 signaling pathways in co-DEGs and some of them were related with pluripotency maintenance such as TGFβ, WNT and JAK-STAT signaling. In TGFβ signaling, BMP family and SMAD family were involved in co-up-regulated DEGs. In WNT signaling, WNT family and receptors were included in co-up-regulated DEGs, while inhibitors of WNT signaling were associated with co-down-regulated DEGs. In JAK-STAT signaling, STAT3 belonged to co-down-regulated DEGs. These DEGs were also confirmed by Real-time PCR. Taken together, BMP and WNT pathways may be activated and paly central roles to retain pluripotency in bovine EdSCs, whereas the LIF/STAT3 pathway may not be operated well.         Investigation on User Experience of Intelligent Personal Assistants from Online Reviews

        In this paper, User Experience (UX) of Intelligent Personal Assistants (IPAs) was investigated through semantic network analysis. As a case study, UX of smart speakers which are a kind of embodied IPAs was investigated through semantic network analysis based on online reviews, identifying what factors are important to UX of IPAs for users. Although there were some limitations, this study contributed to understanding of UX of IPAs, by proposing eleven important factors for UX of IPAs and validating them. This study showed that most of the users satisfied the use of IPAs, although they felt that performance was not completely reliable, which was similar with previous studies related to IPAs. In addition, this study showed the aesthetic aspects are also important for users’ enjoyment, which was the interest result. The results of this study are noteworthy and considered to be reflected in the design of IPAs to improve UX of IPAs and satisfy users.

      • Holding of Bovine Blastocysts at Suprazero Temperatures using Small Molecules

        Although assisted reproductive technology (ART) currently exists, the only embryo preservation technology that is available is cryopreservation. In the present study, small molecules were used to hold embryos at room temperature. The basic medium for embryo holding for a short period of time at 4℃, 10℃ and 20℃ consisted of 1% BSA non-cryopreservation medium (BNC) instead of fetal bovine serum. To maintain survival and prevent damage during embryo incubation, three candidate small molecules were selected-CHIR99021, Y-27632 and Thiazovivin- and their concentrations were optimized. The viability and hatching rate of embryos incubated at 10℃ were greater for Y-27632-BNC and CHIR99021+Y-27632-BNC compared to BNC. However, the rate was lower for Thiazovivin-BNC compared to BNC. Although there were no surviving embryos after incubation at 20℃, the viability and hatching rate of embryos significantly increased in Y-27632-BNC and CHIR99021+Y-27632-BNC compared to BNC. The pregnancy rate of embryos incubated at 20℃ was also greater in the CHIR99021+Y-27632- BNC group compared to that in the frozen group. The mechanism by which small molecules enhance survival of embryos during incubation was investigated, and expression of heat shock protein 70 was observed to increase. The findings of this work may be useful in improving ART in the agricultural field.

        Mean-Variance Efficiency of Reserve Portfolios

        This paper analyzes the mean-variance efficiency of the reserve portfolios of central banks in an effort to shed light on the recent debate regarding the need for portfolio diversification. Using likelihood ratio test statistics, we examine the efficiency of the reserve portfolios of 18 countries from 2000 to 2009. The null hypothesis of efficiency is rejected for approximately half of the countries. However, overall inefficiency appears to have decreased over time, particularly in those countries that previously had inefficient portfolio diversification. Along with the continued dominance of the US dollar in reserve portfolios, our findings suggest that the status of the US dollar as an international reserve currency did not decline.

        Effects of nanoscale ridge/groovepattern arrayed surface on in vitro differentiation of multi-potent pulp cells derived from human supernumerary teeth

        Human dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs) are multi-potent mesenchymal stem cells that have several differentiation potentials. An understanding of thetissues that differentiate from these cells can provide insights for future regenerative therapeutics and tissue engineering strategies. The mesiodens is the most frequent form of supernumerary tooth from which DPSCs can differentiate into several lineages similar to cells from normal deciduous teeth. Recently, it has been shown that nanoscale structures can affect stem cell differentiation. In our presentstudy, we investigated the effects of a 250-nm nanoscale ridge/groove pattern array on the osteogenic and adipogenic differentiation of dental pulp cells from mesiodenscontaining human DPSCs. To this end, the expression of lineage specific markers after differentiation induction was analyzed by lineage specific staining and RT-PCR. The nanoscale pattern arrayed surface showed apositive effect on the adipogenic differentiation of DPSCs. There was no difference between nanoscale pattern arrayed surface and conventional surface groups onosteogenic differentiation. In conclusion, the nanoscale ridge/groove pattern arrayed surface can be used to enhance the adipogenic differentiation of DPSCs derived from mesiodens. This finding provides an improved understanding of the effects of topography on cell differentiation as well as the potential use of supernumerary tooth in regenerative dental medicine.
