        Performance Improvement Using an Automation System for Segmentation of Multiple Parametric Features Based on Human Footprint

        Rapid increase in population growth has made the mankind to delve in appropriate identification of individuals through biometrics. Foot Print Recognition System is a new challenging area involved in the Personal recognition that is easy to capture and distinctive. Foot Print has its own dimensions, different in many ways and can be distinguished from one another. The main objective is to provide a novel efficient automated system Segmentation using Foot Print based on structural relations among the features in order to overcome the existing manual method. This system comprises of various statistical computations of various foot print parameters for identifying the factors like Instep-Foot Index, Ball-Foot Index, Heel- Index, Toe- Index etc. The input is naked footprint and the output result to an efficient segmentation system thereby leading to time complexity.

      • Electrical properties of Pt/n-type Ge Schottky contact with PEDOT:PSS interlayer

        The effect of poly (3,4-ethylene dioxythiophene):poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) interlayer on the Schottky barrier parameters of Pt/n-type Ge Schottky contacts was investigated. The PEDOT:PSS interlayer in between Pt and n-type Ge influences the space charge region of the Pt/n-type Ge Schottky junction, leading to increase in the barrier height. Due to interface dipoles and lateral barrier inhomogeneities caused by the presence of PEDOT:PSS interlayer, Pt/PEDOT:PSS/n-type Ge Schottky contact showed a deviation from the ideal thermionic emission model of the carrier transport at the metal/semiconductor junction. From the reverse current-voltage (I-V) characteristics, the Poole-Frenkel emission and Schottky emission were found to be the dominating carrier conduction mechanisms of Pt/PEDOT:PSS/n-type Ge Schottky contact at lower and higher reverse biases, respectively.

        Study on diuretic activity and electrolytes excretion of methanol extract ofLippia nodiflora (Verbenaceae) in rats

        In the Indian traditional medicine, Lippia nodiflora (Verbenaceae) whole plant is claimed to possess powerful diuretic activity. However, the diuretic potential of this plant is not yet investigated. The aim of this study was to evaluate the diuretic potential of methanol extract of Lippia nodiflora (MELN) in rats. Control (0.9% saline solution, 25 ml/kg, b.w) or urea (1 g/kg b.w) or frusemide (5 mg/kg b.w) and different concentrations of MELN (200 and 400 mg/kg b.w) were intraperitoneally administered (n = 6 per each treatment group) to hydrated rats and their urine output was monitored over a period of 5 h and 24 h after drug administration. The diuretic responses with its electrolyte excretion potency of the extract were highly remarkable in comparison with control animals. The extract at doses of 200 and 400 mg/kg shows a significant increase in volume of urine with increase in Na+, Ca2+ and Cl- excretion accompanied by the excretion of K+ in dose dependent manner. This study suggests that the active component(s) in MELN had similar diuretic effect to that of frusemide. These results validate the traditional use of Lippia nodiflora as a diuretic agent.         Antimicrobial and lipid peroxidation inhibition activity of Oxystelma esculentum (Asclepiadaceae)

        The aerial parts of methanol extract of Oxystelma esculentum (MEOE) (Asclepiadaceae) was evaluated for in vitro lipid peroxidation and antimicrobial activity. Lipid peroxidation was assayed by the change in optical density of the various concentrations (20 - 320 µg/ml) and the percentage inhibition was estimated. Ascorbate/FeSO4-induced peroxidation was inhibited by MEOE and standard antioxidants such as BHA, BHT and the percentage inhibition of the methanol extract was increased with dose dependent manner. The IC50 value of the MEOE, BHA and BHT for lipid peroxidation was found to be 135.24 µg/ml, 25.62 µg/ml and 17.13 µg/ml, respectively. The antimicrobial activity of MEOE was determined by disc diffusion method with three gram-positive, five gram-negative and two fungal microorganisms. MEOE exhibited the antimicrobial activity against the tested microorganisms except Salmonella typhimurium (MTCC 98). In present study, it is concluded that MEOE has significant effect in the inhibition of lipid peroxidation and possesses good antimicrobial activity.

      • Cytotoxicity, Apoptosis Induction and Anti-Metastatic Potential of Oroxylum indicum in Human Breast Cancer Cells

        Despite clinical advances in anticancer therapy, there is still a need for novel anticancer metabolites, with higher efficacy and lesser side effects. Oroxylum indicum (L.) Vent. is a small tree of the Bignoniaceae family which is well known for its food and medicinal properties. In present study, the chemopreventive properties of O. indicum hot and cold non-polar extracts (petroleum ether and chloroform) were investigated with MDA-MB-231 (cancer cells) and WRL-68 (non-tumor cells) by XTT assay. All the extracts, and particularly the petroleum ether hot extract (PHO), exhibited significantly (P<0.05) higher cytotoxicity in MDA-MB-231 when compared to WRL-68 cells. PHO was then tested for apoptosis induction in estrogen receptor (ER)-negative (MDA-MB-231) and ER-positive (MCF-7) breast cancer cells by cellular DNA fragmentation ELISA, where it proved more efficient in the MDA-MB-231 cells. Further, when PHO was tested for anti-metastatic potential in a cell migration inhibition assay, it exhibited beneficial effects. Thus non-polar extracts of O. indicum (especially PHO) can effectively target ER-negative breast cancer cells to induce apoptosis, without harming normal cells by cancer-specific cytotoxicity. Hence, it could be considered as an extract with candidate precursors to possibly harness or alleviate ER-negative breast cancer progression even in advanced stages of malignancy.

      • Apoptosis-Induced Cell Death due to Oleanolic Acid in HaCaT Keratinocyte Cells -a Proof-of-Principle Approach for Chemopreventive Drug Development

        Oleanolic acid (OA) is a naturally occurring triterpenoid in food materials and is a component of the leaves and roots of Olea europaea, Viscum album L., Aralia chinensis L. and more than 120 other plant species. There are several reports validating its antitumor activity against different cancer cells apart from its hepatoprotective activity. However, antitumor activity against skin cancer has not beed studied well thus far. Hence the present study of effects of OA against HaCaT (immortalized keratinocyte) cells - a cell-based epithelial model system for toxicity/ethnopharmacology-based studies - was conducted. Radical scavenging activity ($DPPH{\cdot}$) and FRAP were determined spectrophotometrically. Proliferation was assessed by XTT assay at 24, 48 and 72 hrs with exposure to various concentrations (12.5-200 ${\mu}M$) of OA. Apoptotic induction potential of OA was demonstrated using a cellular DNA fragmentation ELISA method. Morphological studies were also carried out to elucidate its antitumor potential. The results revealed that OA induces apoptosis by altering cellular morphology as well as DNA integrity in HaCaT cells in a dose-dependent manner, with comparatively low cytotoxicity. The moderate toxicity observed in HaCaT cells, with induction of apoptosis, possibly suggests greater involvement of programmed-cell death-mediated mechanisms. We conclude that OA has relatively low toxicity and has the potential to induce apoptosis in HaCaT cells and hence provides a substantial and sound scientific basis for further validation studies.
