Obesity may be viewed as the most daunting health condition of the present time. Although obesity was once considered a problem only of high-income industrialized societies, obesity rates are rising worldwide. The WHO formally recognized obesity as a global epidemic. Obesity is not simply a cosmetic problem. There is a general agreement that obesity is a serious, chronic health problem. It is also a strong risk factor for type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and cardiovascular disease (CVD). The main objectives of this mini review are to provide some useful and practical information on the definition and assessment of obesity, present epidemiological trends, and discuss health complications associated with the obese state that underscore the impact of obesity on Public Health.
Multi-view gait recognition using a doubly-kernel approach on the Grassmann manifold
Connie, Tee,Goh, Kah Ong Michael,Teoh, Andrew Beng Jin Elsevier 2016 Neurocomputing Vol.216 No.-

Abstract

View variation is one of the greatest challenges faced by the gait recognition research community. Recently, there are studies that model sets of gait features from multiple views as linear subspaces, which are known to form a special manifold called the Grassmann manifold. Conjecturing that modeling via linear subspace representation is not completely sufficient for gait recognition across view change, we take a step forward to consider non-linear subspace representation. A collection of multi-view gait features encapsulated in the form of a linear subspace is projected to the non-linear subspace through the expansion coefficients induced by kernel principal component analysis. Since subspace representation is inherently non-Euclidean, naïve vectorization as input to the vector-based pattern analysis machines is expected to yield suboptimal accuracy performance. We deal with this difficulty by embedding the manifold in a Reproducing Kernel Hilbert Space (RKHS) through a positive definite kernel function defined on the Grassmann manifold. A closer examination reveals that the proposed approach can actually be interpreted as a doubly-kernel method. To be specific, the first kernel maps the linear subspace representation non-linearly to a feature space; while the second kernel permits the application of kernelization-enabled machines established for vector-based data on the manifold-valued multi-view gait features. Experiments on the CASIA gait database shows that the proposed doubly-kernel method is effective against view change in gait recognition.

Highlights

A Grassmann doubly-kernel approach is presented for multi-view gait recognition.

A collection of multi-view gait samples are represented as linear subspaces.

Non-linear variant of original subspaces are constructed via basis induced by KPCA.

Kernelized Grassmann kernels are introduced for application of vector-based method.

Experiments show promising results for gait recognition with vast view difference.

New Era Nutrition and Food Research is Leading Us Beyond Essential Nutrients
Connie M. Weaver 한국식품영양과학회 2021 한국식품영양과학회 학술대회발표집 Vol.2021 No.10
Dietary guidance and nutrient recommendations have traditionally been based on meeting essential nutrient needs to prevent nutrient deficiencies. The explosion of interest in bioactive constituents and functional foods for promoting health and resiliency to prevent chronic disease is raising questions about what kind of research is needed to create a rigorous evidence based for setting food guidance policy and what the process should be for developing the policies. A chronic disease risk reduction category was developed and applied first to sodium and potassium. A Dietary Reference Intake-type proposed process for bioactive foods and beverages was recently developed. Best practices for designing and conducting human nutrition clinical trials were published in a series of articles in Advances in Nutrition in 2020 and 2021. Key elements will be highlighted from our dose response randomized, controlled trial of blueberries and bone health in postmenopausal women that will be featured in Frontiers in Nutrition. New tools for identifying biomarkers of exposure and outcome measures are launching an era of personalized nutrition.
DESIGN THINKING: SUSTAINABILITY THROUGH CONTINUOUS EVOLUTION
Connie Jun,Byungkeun Oh 한국디자인학회 2015 한국디자인학회 학술발표대회 논문집 Vol.2015 No.10
In this study, three main topics are further examined in relation to design thinking. Through the observation of historical, creative and logical thinking ideals, the cognitive thought through conceptual thinking processes and the principles and processes of design thinking. Design thinking methods are investigated deeper to understand the interconnection between various design methods. This wll be achieved through sustaining the core principles of design thinking while evolving and adapting to various demands. With this analysis, a new design thinking method is introduced through the comparing and contrasting of various methods.
