Numerical and statistical analysis of permeability of concrete as a random heterogeneous composite

Kefei Li,Chunsheng Zhou 사단법인 한국계산역학회 2010 Computers and Concrete, An International Journal Vol.7 No.5

This paper investigates the concrete permeability through a numerical and statistical approach. Concrete is considered as a random heterogeneous composite of three phases: aggregates, interfacial transition zones (ITZ) and matrix. The paper begins with some classical bound and estimate theories applied to concrete permeability and the influence of ITZ on these bound and estimate values is discussed. Numerical samples for permeability analysis are established through random aggregate structure (RAS) scheme, each numerical sample containing randomly distributed aggregates coated with ITZ and dispersed in a homogeneous matrix. The volumetric fraction of aggregates is fixed and the size distribution of aggregates observes Fuller’s curve. Then finite element method is used to solve the steady permeation problem on 2D numerical samples and the overall permeability is deduced from flux-pressure relation. The impact of ITZ on overall permeability is analyzed in terms of ITZ width and contrast ratio between ITZ and matrix permeabilities. Hereafter, 3680 samples are generated for 23 sample sizes and 4 contrast ratios, and statistical analysis is performed on the permeability dispersion in terms of sample size and ITZ characteristics. By sample theory, the size of representative volume element (RVE) for permeability is then quantified considering sample realization number and expected error. Concluding remarks are provided for the impact of ITZ on concrete permeability and its statistical characteristics.

Industrial-scale biological treatment of Chinese nutgall processing wastewater by combined expanded granular sludge bed and bio-contact oxidation

        Yundong Wu,Kanggen Zhou,Shuyu Dong,Wei Yu,Chunsheng Liang 대한환경공학회 2015 Environmental Engineering Research Vol.20 No.4

The industrial-scale biological treatment of Chinese nutgall processing wastewater was conducted with a 200 ㎥ expanded granular sludge bed reactor and a 900 ㎥ bio-contact oxidation reactor. The temperature of the two reactors was controlled under mesophilic conditions (32-40℃), through changing the proportion of the dilution water, which was composed of steam condensation water and residual circulating water. The effluent COD, gallic acid, chroma, total nitrogen, total phosphorus levels and pH of both the expanded granular sludge bed and bio-contact oxidation reactors were monitored. In addition, the redox potential in the expanded granular sludge bed was recorded. The total COD removal efficiency was 87.257% when the influent COD concentration was 14 251±3 148 mg/L-1, and the ratio of wastewater: dilution water was 1:5. The removal efficiencies of gallic acid, chroma, total nitrogen, and total phosphorus were 72.221%, 43.940%, 64.151% and 39.316%, respectively. The effluent pH increased in either the expanded granular sludge bed reactor or the bio-contact oxidation reactor during the operation. The redox potential in the expanded granular sludge bed varied between -367 mV and -435 mV. The results indicate that the combined process was suitable for treating Chinese nutgall processing wastewater.

Expression of Cdc25B mRNA in Duodenal Mucosa of Chicken

        Qin, Junhui,Zhang, Hui,Bao, Huijun,Zhou, Qiang,Liu, Yi,Xu, Chunsheng,Chu, Xiaohong,Chen, Qiusheng Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2010 Animal Bioscience Vol.23 No.4

Cdc25B is a mitotic regulator that might act as a starter phosphatase to initiate the positive feedback loop at the entry into mitotic (M) phase. In the present study, distribution of Cdc25B mRNA in duodenal mucosa of the chicken was demonstrated by means of in situ hybridization histochemistry (ISHH) using sense and antisense digoxigenin (DIG)-labeled RNA probes. The results showed that there were many labeled cells distributing in the duodenal mucosa of the adult chicken. Of these labeled cells, 81.60${\pm}$9.63% of Cdc25B mRNA positive cells was distributed in the basilar part and mid-portion of the intestinal gland and 36.21${\pm}$8.81% in the middle and basilar portion of villi of the small intestine of the chicken, respectively. Most of these labeled cells were positive in the regions of the stem cell and proliferation. The signals of ISHH decreased from basilar to upper part in the crypt of Lieberkuhn and weakened in the inferior villi of the duodenum. Moreover, the positive signals were both in the cytoplasm and cell nucleus. However, the labeled cells were negative in both the lamina muscularis mucosae and muscular layer. The results of ISHH suggested the existence of Cdc25B mRNA and vigorous proliferation activities in the duodenal mucosa of adult chicken, replenishing the cells which had sloughed off from the superior part of the villus. Our results provide some molecular evidence for a regular pattern of avian intestinal epitheliosis and functional partition and provide an approach to further study of the locations of Cdc25B in the chicken.
