• From Dominion Day to Canada Day, 1946-1982: History, Heritage and National Identity

        Raymond B. Blake(Raymond B. Blake ) 한국캐나다학회 2011 Asia-Pacific Journal of Canadian Studies (APJCS) Vol.17 No.2

The more than twenty attempts in the Canadian Parliament from 1946 to 1982 to change the official name of Canada’s birthday from Dominion Day to Canada Day shows that change did not come rapidly to national symbols after the Second World War. The struggle over the name change was not a contest between those who wanted to keep Canada British and those who wanted Canada to have its own unique Canadian identity, but rather a debate over the role that Canada’s history and heritage should play in shaping national symbols. This paper also contends that the place that Canada’s British heritage played in Canada’s national identity became a partisan political issue as the federal government began to remove lingering symbols of the British heritage to meet the growing separatist movement in Quebec. In other words, Canada’s national identity was being manipulated and manufactured in the pursuit of national unity.

      • Aircraft measurements of the latitudinal, vertical, and seasonal variations of NMHCs, methyl nitrate, methyl halides, and DMS during the First Aerosol Characterization Experiment (ACE 1)

        Blake, Nicola J.,Blake, Donald R.,Wingenter, Oliver W.,Sive, Barkley C.,Kang, Chang Hee,Thornton, Donald C.,Bandy, Alan R.,Atlas, Elliot,Flocke, Frank,Harris, Joyce M.,Rowland, F. Sherwood 濟州大學校 基礎科學硏究所 2000 基礎科學硏究 Vol.13 No.1

Canister sampling for the determination of atmospheric mixing ratios of nonmethane hydrocarbons (NMHC_(S)), selected halocarbons, and methyl nitrate was conducted aboard the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) C-130 aircraft over the Pacific and Southern Oceans as part of the First Aerosol Characterization Experiment (ACE 1) during November and December 1995. A latitudinal profile, flown from 76˚N to 60˚S, revealed latitudinal gradients for most trace gases NMHC and halocarbon gases with predominantly anthropogenic sources, including ethane, erhyne, and tetrachloroethene, exhibited significantly higher mixing ratios in the northern hemisphere at all altitudes. Methyl chloride exhibited its lowest mixing ratios at the highest northern hemisphere latitudes, and the distributions of methyl nitrate and methyl iodide were consistent with tropical and subtropical oceanic sources. Layers containing continental air characteristic of aged biomass burning emissions were observed above about 3km over the remote southern Pacific and near New Zealand between approximately 19˚S and 43˚S. These plumes originated from the west, possibly from fires in southern Africa. The month-Ion, intensive investigation of the clean marine southern midlatitude troposphere south of Australia revealed decreases in the mixing ratios of ethane, ethyne, propane, and tetrachloroethene, consistent with their seasonal mixing ratio cycle. By contrast, increases in the average marine boundary layer concentrations cf methyl iodide, methyl nitrate, and dimethyl sulfide (DMS) were observed as the season progressed to summer conditions. These increases were most appreciable i n the region south of 44˚S over Southern Ocean waters characterized as subantaretic and polar, indicating a seasonal increase in oceanic productivity for these gases.

Metastatic adenocarcinoma of the pancreas presents as metastases to the axillary/supraclavicular region as the first sign of the disease

        Blake A Stewart,Abdul Adjei,Xiaohong Zhang,Jacqueline C Oxenberg 한국간담췌외과학회 2017 Annals of hepato-biliary-pancreatic surgery Vol.21 No.4

Mucinous tumors of the pancreas are rare and the diagnosis of invasive carcinoma can be a dilemma. While metastatic disease from mucinous cystadenocarcinoma (MCAC) and invasive intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms (IPMN) have been reported, no extraperitoneal mucinous cystic metastatic disease has been described. When metastatic, the overall survival rates for invasive adenocarcinoma, mucinous cystadenocarcinoma (MCAC) and invasive intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms (IPMN) are similar. The best improvement in the overall and progression free survival has been demonstrated with FOLFIRINOX (folinic acid – fluorouracil – irinotecan – oxaliplatin) for metastatic adenocarcinoma and Gemcitabine based regimens for MCAC. However, the variable responses of metastatic mucinous lesions have been observed and the overall prognosis remains poor. We describe a case of a patient who presented with metastatic adenocarcinoma of the pancreas as cystic masses in the supraclavicular and axillary regions. Additionally, this patient was initially treated with FOLFIRINOX and continues to have stable primary and metastatic disease after 18 months from the diagnosis.

      • Power and Control in School Rugby: An Hermeneutic Interpretation of the Pedagogical Intentions of Five Secondary School Rugby Coaches in New Zealand

Blake Bennett 글로벌지식마케팅경영학회 2018 Journal of Global Sport Management Vol. No.

The literature indicates that, historically, justification for rugby participation in New Zealand is intended to develop young males’ character. However, possible shifts in these assumptions has implications for rugby coaching and player development in 21st century learning contexts. Given the current emphasis on humanistic, athlete-centred pedagogies in secondary school physical education and coach education documents in New Zealand, a scarcity of contemporary research exploring this area remains. The current hermeneutic study investigates conversations held with five New Zealand secondary school rugby coaches. Participants’ use of control and power and a reluctance to change from entrenched coach-centred pedagogy is observed, as is an absence of reference to the wider educative nature of rugby participation. Drawing on Bourdieusean notions of ‘capital’ and the socio-cultural contexts in which learning occurs, discussion questions the alignment of the participants’ pedagogies with the current direction and intentions of contemporary curriculum documents in New Zealand.

What’s So Peaceful about Asian Peace?

Blake Hoffman,Paul F Diehl,Andrew Owsiak,Gary Goertz,Yahve Gallegos Institute for International Trade and Cooperation, 2018 Asian International Studies Review Vol.19 No.1

Previous work on an Asian peace has been imprecise on where, when, and why it occurs. This study examines different levels of state-based peace starting with the absence of war; unlike other treatments, however, we examine the incidence of civil war as well as the traditional interstate war. We then consider a more stringent threshold for peace, focusing on the absence or diminution of violent conflicts short of war, specifically incidents of militarized disputes and lesser conflicts. Finally, we look a broader conception of peace (“positive peace”) and examine all state relationships in Asia along a peace scale, which ranges from serious rivalries to negative peace to integrated security communities. Our findings indicate the strongest evidence for Asian peace with respect to avoiding interstate war. Nevertheless, there are significant conflicts involving violence and the threat of military force that persist in the region. A number of rivalries, many of them long-standing, continue to raise the specter of war. In addition, positive peace in Asia is rare for interstate relations and isolated to a few states for internal peace.

      • The Current Political Scene in Canada

Blake, Donald 효성여자대학교 법정연구소 1994 법정연구 Vol.2 No.-

I am honoured have been invited by Professor Kim to visit Korea and to speak at your university. We in Canada have been very impressed by the strong economic growth in Korea and by the steps you have taken to establish a democratic political system. This is my first visit to Korea so I have many things to see and learn about. Because I am from a very young country, I welcome the opportunity to see one which is hundred's of years old.

Learner Perspectives on National Identity and EFL Education in Japan : Report of a Questionnaire Study

Blake Turnbull 아시아영어교육학회 2017 The Journal of Asia TEFL Vol.14 No.2

Although the Japanese discourse of nihonjinron argues that the increasing hegemony of the English language will have negative effects on the Japanese identity, some scholars have suggested the opposite, that English in Japan plays a significant role in strengthening and maintaining the ideologies of the Japanese national identity. This paper investigates the potential for both positive and/or negative impacts of English education in Japan by analysing the attitudes and perspectives of 97 Japanese tertiary-level EFL students towards the study of English on Japan’s national and cultural identity. The findings suggest that support for the theories of the nihonjinron discourse are not as strong amongst the younger generation in Japan as what they once were. Participants identified the Japanese language as a constituent element of national identity, and it is therefore suggested that removing Japanese from the EFL classroom entirely, as has been advocated for in foreign language policies, may actually cultivate negative ideologies towards the study of English in general. The findings suggest the need to build a positive relationship between the English language as a support for Japanese identity if we are to see an improvement in Japanese students’ attitudes toward, and development of, EFL on the whole.

      • Turing patterns in parabolic systems of conservation laws and numerically observed stability of periodic waves

        Barker, Blake,Jung, Soyeun,Zumbrun, Kevin Elsevier 2018 Physica. D, Nonlinear phenomena Vol.367 No.-

Abstract

Turing patterns on unbounded domains have been widely studied in systems of reaction–diffusion equations. However, up to now, they have not been studied for systems of conservation laws. Here, we (i) derive conditions for Turing instability in conservation laws and (ii) use these conditions to find families of periodic solutions bifurcating from uniform states, numerically continuing these families into the large-amplitude regime. For the examples studied, numerical stability analysis suggests that stable periodic waves can emerge either from supercritical Turing bifurcations or, via secondary bifurcation as amplitude is increased, from subcritical Turing bifurcations. This answers in the affirmative a question of Oh–Zumbrun whether stable periodic solutions of conservation laws can occur. Determination of a full small-amplitude stability diagram – specifically, determination of rigorous Eckhaus-type stability conditions – remains an interesting open problem.

Highlights

Conditions for Turing instability in conservation laws are derived.

There exist no Turing-type instabilities in conservation laws for 2 × 2 systems.

Stable periodic waves in conservation laws are numerically observed.
