Would Recessionary Shock Induce More Intermediation in the Informal Sector?

( Biswajit Mandal ) 세종대학교 경제통합연구소(구 세종대학교 국제경제연구소) 2011 Journal of Economic Integration Vol.26 No.4

This paper attempts to give an idea about the upshot of a recessionary phase on the intermediation activity which is required for the survival of the informal fragment of a society. Informal part of the economy covers a large chunk of the total economic activities in any developing economy. Therefore it is imperative to check the possible consequences of recession on this subdivision because intermediation also requires unskilled work force which need to be pulled out from the productive spectrum. In doing so I have used the hybrid of standard Heckscher-Ohlin and Specific Factor general equilibrium models of trade. In such a framework it has been shown that a recessionary shock may induce an expansion in intermediation activity under certain factor intensity assumption.

A Note on How and Why Growth and Unemployment Go Hand in Hand in Developing Economies

Biswajit Mandal,Arindam Mandal 한국국제경제학회 2015 International Economic Journal Vol.29 No.4

This paper develops a simple model to explain the phenomenon of persistent unemployment, even in an economy experiencing high output growth. In the model, unemployment grows at a rate identical with the growth rate of input factors and sectors. The result is primarily triggered by a pre-fixed minimum wage for unskilled workers. To corroborate our claim, we have empirically tested our model hypothesis using data for 12 developing countries and found empirical results consistent with the theory. To mitigate or reduce unemployment, history becomes crucial in deciding on the desired rate of growth in different sectors.

The prevalence of undernutrition among the Santal children and quality of life of their households: a study from hilly region of West Bengal, India

        Ghosh Debasis,Mandal Mrinal,Karmakar Manas,Mandal Dayamoy,Modak Partha,Ghosh Biswajit,Mandi Susanta,Haque Sk. Mafizul 대한공간정보학회 2021 Spatial Information Research Vol.29 No.5

Malnutrition is a global phenomenon in general and India is no exception. Present study was conducted to determine the prevalence of undernutrition among the Santal children of Ajodhya Gram Panchayat of Purulia district of West Bengal, India. Here, quality of life of the households of the studied research participants is also investigated to understand the role of quality of life in the prevalence of undernutrition. A total number of 307 children aged in between 5–10 years were evaluated using the standard anthropometric techniques, such as height-forage, weight-for-age and body mass index for-age to determine the prevalence of stunting, wasting and underweight conditions of the Santal tribal children. The nutritional status index of children and the quality of life index of those children’s households have also been calculated to perceive the relation between these two indices. A cluster analysis has also been performed to see the similarity in terms of nutritional level among the children across the mouzas of Ajodhya Gram Panchayat. The prevalence of stunting, wasting and underweight among the children is found to be 27.69%, 36.81% and 44.63% respectively. The overall prevalence of undernutrition is recorded 58.31%. The nutritional status index is calculated to be 0.488 (moderate) for children, while the quality of life index for households is computed as 0.199 (very poor). The study reveals the occurrence of undernutrition among children is closely associated with poor quality of life of households of Ajodhya. The chi-square tests indicate that no statistically significant variation (p\0.05) in the prevalence of undernutrition in between male and female children, and among the different age groups is observed.

Measurement and Modeling of Job Stress of Electric Overhead Traveling Crane Operators

        Jhareswar Maiti,Pradip K. Ray,Biswajit Samanta,Obilisetty B. Krishna,Saptarshi Mandal,Sobhan Sarkar 한국산업안전공단 산업안전보건연구원 2015 Safety and health at work Vol.6 No.4

Background: In this study, the measurement of job stress of electric overhead traveling crane operators and quantification of the effects of operator and workplace characteristics on job stress were assessed. Methods: Job stress was measured on five subscales: employee empowerment, role overload, role ambiguity, rule violation, and job hazard. The characteristics of the operators that were studied were age, experience, body weight, and body height. The workplace characteristics considered were hours of exposure, cabin type, cabin feature, and crane height. The proposed methodology included administration of a questionnaire survey to 76 electric overhead traveling crane operators followed by analysis using analysis of variance and a classification and regression tree. Results: The key findings were: (1) the five subscales can be used to measure job stress; (2) employee empowerment was the most significant factor followed by the role overload; (3) workplace characteristics contributed more towards job stress than operator’s characteristics; and (4) of the workplace characteristics, crane height was the major contributor. Conclusion: The issues related to crane height and cabin feature can be fixed by providing engineering or foolproof solutions than relying on interventions related to the demographic factors.
