        Influence of head structure on hydrodynamic characteristics of transonic motion projectiles

        The hydrodynamic characteristic of transonic motion projectiles with different head diameters are investigated by numerical simulation. Compressibility effect in liquid-phase water are modeled using the Tait state equation. The result shows that with increasing of velocity the compression waves transfer to shock waves, which cause the significant increasing of pressure and decreasing the dimensions of supercavities. While the increasing of head diameter, the thickness, the vapor volume fraction and the drag coefficient of supercavities are all enhanced, which is conducive to the stability of transonic-speed projectiles. The cavity dynamics of the different head projectiles are compared, and the results shows when Mach number is in high region, the truncated cone head projectile is enveloped by a cavity which results in less drag and better stability.

        Development of Human-Machine Interface for Teleoperation of a Mobile Manipulator

        Human-robot control interfaces have received increased attention during the past decades for conveniently introducing robot into human daily life. In this paper, a novel Human-machine Interface (HMI) is developed, which contains two components. One is based on the surface electromyography (sEMG) signal, which is from the human upper limb, and the other is based on the Microsoft Kinect sensor. The proposed interface allows the user to control in real time a mobile humanoid robot arm in 3-D space, through upper limb motion estimation by sEMG recordings and Microsoft Kinect sensor. The effectiveness of the method is verified by experiments, including random arm motions in the 3-D space with variable hand speed profiles.

        Synthesizing Manganese Oxide Materials for Electrochemical Supercapacitors

        The application of manganese oxide is limited for its difficulty to prevent the generated particles from aggregating. In our study, an optimized polyvinyl polypropylene-assisted chemical coprecipitation method was adopted to improve the dispersion of manganese oxide particles, which was also facilely scalable in large-scale production of materials. The results confirmed that both adding polyvinyl pyrrolidone and conducting thermal treatment for manganese oxide were effective methods to improve the electrochemical properties of manganese oxide.

        Transcriptomic analysis reveals the molecular mechanism of apoptosis induced by Muscovy duck reovirus

        This study was to investigate the molecular mechanism underlying the apoptosis induced by Muscovy duck reovirus (MDRV) through a transcriptomic analysis. Muscovy ducklings were infected with MDRV strain YB and the apoptotic cells in their livers were examined with terminal-deoxynucleotidyl-transferase-mediated nick end labeling and flow cytometry. Genes differentially expressed in the livers of the MDRV-infected ducklings were screened by comparing them with those of uninfected ducklings and were analyzed with a transcriptomic method to illuminate the mechanism of MDRV infection. The results showed that MDRV infection strongly induced apoptotic cells in liver. Significant pathway enrichment determined by a Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes analysis showed that MDRV activated the death receptor family signaling pathway (Fas, TNFR1), the interleukin receptor signaling pathway (IL1, IL3), the phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase signaling pathway, NF-ҝB signaling pathway and calcium ions signaling pathway to induce apoptosis. This was verified by SYBR-Green-based fluorescence quantitative PCR. In conclusion, MDRV induce apoptosis by activation multi signaling pathways.

      • Effect of Electric Field Distribution on Pulse Electrochemical Machining of Small Holes with Tubular Electrode

        Electrochemical machining (ECM) of holes on the surface of nickel-based alloy as tool electrode was investigated to analyze the effect of electric field distribution on hole forming process in ECM of small holes. Based on the experimental and simulation results, it was shown that the law of electric field distribution in electrochemical machining gap with tubular electrode and the effect of gap electric field on dimension of hole were illustrated. In addition, the influences of electrolyte pressure on electric field distribution and stability of machining was studied to conclude the effective factors of machining stability in ECM of holes.

        Detection of favorable alleles for yield and yield components by association mapping in upland cotton

        Association mapping based on linkage disequilibrium provides a promising tool for dissecting the genetic basis underlying complex traits. To reveal the genetic variations of yield and yield components traits in upland cotton, 403 upland cotton accessions were collected and analyzed by 560 genome-wide simple sequence repeats (SSRs). A diverse panel consisting of 403 upland cotton accessions was grown in six different environments, and the yield and yield component traits were measured, and 560 SSR markers covering the whole genome were mapped. Association studies were performed to uncover the genotypic and phenotypic variations using a mixed linear model. Favorable alleles and typical accessions for yield traits were identified. A total of 201 markers were polymorphic, revealing 394 alleles. The average gene diversity and polymorphism information content were 0.556 and 0.483, respectively. Based on a population structure analysis, 403 accessions were divided into two subgroups. A mixed linear model analysis of the association mapping detected 43 marker loci according to the best linear unbiased prediction and in at least three of the six environments(− lgP > 1.30, P < 0.05). Among the 43 associated markers, five were associated with more than two traits simultaneously and nine were coincident with those identified previously. Based on phenotypic effects, favorable alleles and typical accessions that contained the elite allele loci related to yield traits were identified and are widely used in practical breeding. This study detected favorable quantitative trait loci’s alleles and typical accessions for yield traits, these are excellent genetic resources for future high-yield breeding by marker-assisted selection in upland cotton in China.

        Preparation and antimicrobial assay of ceramic brackets coated with TiO₂ thin films

        Objective: Different methods have been utilized to prevent enamel demineralization and other complications during orthodontic treatment. However, none of these methods can offer long-lasting and effective prevention of orthodontic complications or interventions after complications occur. Considering the photocatalytic effect of TiO₂ on organic compounds, we hoped to synthesize a novel bracket with a TiO₂ thin film to develop a photocatalytic antimicrobial effect. Methods: The sol-gel dip coating method was used to prepare TiO₂ thin films on ceramic bracket surfaces. Twenty groups of samples were composed according to the experimental parameters. Crystalline structure and surface morphology were characterized by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy, respectively; film thickness was examined with a surface ellipsometer. The photocatalytic properties under ultraviolet (UV) light irradiation were analyzed by evaluating the degradation ratio of methylene blue (MB) at a certain time. Antibacterial activities of selected thin films were also tested against Lactobacillus acidophilus and Candida albicans . Results: Films with 5 coating layers annealed at 700°C showed the greatest photocatalytic activity in terms of MB decomposition under UV light irradiation. TiO₂ thin films with 5 coating layers annealed at 700°C exhibited the greatest antimicrobial activity under UV-A light irradiation. Conclusions: These results provide promising guidance in prevention of demineralization by increasing antimicrobial activities of film coated brackets.
