Meteorological basis for wind loads calculation in Croatia
Bajic, Alica,Peros, Bernardin Techno-Press 2005 Wind and Structures, An International Journal (WAS Vol.8 No.6
The results of reference wind speed calculation in Croatia as a base for the revision of the Croatian standards for wind loads upon structures are presented. Wind speed averaged over 10 minutes, at 10 m height, in a flat, open terrain, with a 50-year mean return period is given for 27 meteorological stations in Croatia. It is shown that the greatest part of Croatia is covered with expected reference wind speeds up to 25 m/s. Exceptions are stations with specific anemometer location open to the bura wind which is accelerated due to the channelling effects of local orography and the nearby mountain passes where the expected reference wind speed ranges between 38 m/s and 55 m/s. The methodology for unifying all available information from wind measurements regardless of the averaging period is discussed by analysing wind speed variability at the meteorological station in Hvar.
A comparative study of LPWAN technologies for large-scale IoT deployment
Kais Mekki,Eddy Bajic,Frederic Chaxel,Fernand Meyer 한국통신학회 2019 ICT Express Vol.5 No.1
By 2020, more than 50 billion devices will be connected through radio communications. In conjunction with the rapid growth of the Internet of Things (IoT) market, low power wide area networks (LPWAN) have become a popular low-rate long-range radio communication technology. Sigfox, LoRa, and NB-IoT are the three leading LPWAN technologies that compete for large-scale IoT deployment. This paper provides a comprehensive and comparative study of these technologies, which serve as efficient solutions to connect smart, autonomous, and heterogeneous devices. We show that Sigfox and LoRa are advantageous in terms of battery lifetime, capacity, and cost. Meanwhile, NB-IoT offers benefits in terms of latency and quality of service. In addition, we analyze the IoT success factors of these LPWAN technologies, and we consider application scenarios and explain which technology is the best fit for each of these scenarios.
Temperature Dependence of Mode Coupling in low-NA Plastic Optical Fibers
Savovic, Svetislav,Kovacevic, Milan S.,Bajic, Jovan S.,Stupar, Dragan Z.,Djordjevich, Alexandar,Zivanov, Milos,Drljaca, Branko,Simovic, Ana,Kyunghwan Oh IEEE 2015 Journal of Lightwave Technology Vol.33 No.1
<P>Using the power flow equation and experimental measurements, investigated in this paper is the state of mode coupling in low NA (0.3) step-index (SI) plastic optical fibers under varied temperature. Numerical results obtained using the power flow equation agree well with experimental measurements. It is found that elevated temperatures of low-NA SI plastic optical fibers strengthened mode coupling. These properties remained after a year, with the fiber being subjected to environmental temperature variations of >35 K. These thermally induced changes of the fiber properties are attributed to the increased intrinsic perturbation effects in the PMMA material at higher temperatures. This results in an increase of the measured bandwidth with increasing fiber temperature as well as earlier the bandwidth switch from the functional dependence of 1/z to 1/z1/2 (slower bandwidth decrease).</P>
Pixel-Wise Unified Rate-Quantization Model for Multi-Level Rate Control
Hyomin Choi,Jonghun Yoo,Junghak Nam,Donggyu Sim,Bajic, Ivan V. IEEE 2013 IEEE journal of selected topics in signal processi Vol.7 No.6
<P>In this paper, we present a pixel-wise unified rate quantization (R-Q) model for a low-complexity rate control on configurable coding units of high efficiency video coding (HEVC). In the case of HEVC, which employs hierarchical coding block structure, multiple R-Q models can be employed for the various block sizes. However, we found that the ratios of distortions over bits for all the blocks are a nearly constant because of employment of the rate distortion optimization technique. Hence, one relationship model between rate and quantization can be derived from the characteristic of similar ratios of distortions over bits regardless of block sizes. Thus, we propose the pixel-wise unified R-Q model for HEVC rate control working on the multi-level for all block sizes. We employ a simple leaky bucket model for bit control. The rate control based on the proposed pixel-wise unified R-Q model is implemented on HEVC test model 6.1 (HM6.1). According to the evaluation for the proposed rate control, the average matching percentage to target bitrates is 99.47% and the average PSNR degradation is 0.76 dB. Based on the comparative study, we found that the proposed rate control shows low bit fluctuation and good RD performance, compared to R-lambda rate control for long sequences.</P>

<P>Abstract</P><P>The R2R3-type <I>OsMyb4</I> transcription factor of rice has been shown to play a role in the regulation of osmotic adjustment in heterologous overexpression studies. However, the exact composition and organization of its underlying transcriptional network has not been established to be a robust tool for stress tolerance enhancement by regulon engineering. <I>OsMyb4</I> network was dissected based on commonalities between the global chilling stress transcriptome and the transcriptome configured by <I>OsMyb4</I> overexpression. <I>OsMyb4</I> controls a hierarchical network comprised of several regulatory sub-clusters associated with cellular defense and rescue, metabolism and development. It regulates target genes either directly or indirectly through intermediary MYB, ERF, bZIP, NAC, ARF and CCAAT-HAP transcription factors. Regulatory sub-clusters have different combinations of MYB-like, GCC-box-like, ERD1-box-like, ABRE-like, G-box-like, as1/ocs/TGA-like, AuxRE-like, gibberellic acid response element (GARE)-like and JAre-like <I>cis</I>-elements. Cold-dependent network activity enhanced cellular antioxidant capacity through radical scavenging mechanisms and increased activities of phenylpropanoid and isoprenoid metabolic processes involving various abscisic acid (ABA), jasmonic acid (JA), salicylic acid (SA), ethylene and reactive oxygen species (ROS) responsive genes. <I>OsMyb4</I> network is independent of drought response element binding protein/C-repeat binding factor (<I>DREB/CBF</I>) and its sub-regulons operate with possible co-regulators including nuclear factor-Y. Because of its upstream position in the network hierarchy, <I>OsMyb4</I> functions quantitatively and pleiotrophically. Supra-optimal expression causes misexpression of alternative targets with costly trade-offs to panicle development.</P>
