Collapse behaviour of three-dimensional brick-block systems using non-linear programming
Baggio, Carlo,Trovalusci, Patrizia Techno-Press 2000 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.10 No.2
A two-step procedure for the application of non linear constrained programming to the limit analysis of rigid brick-block systems with no-tension and frictional interface is implemented and applied to various masonry structures. In the first step, a linear problem of programming, obtained by applying the upper bound theorem of limit analysis to systems of blocks interacting through no-tension and dilatant interfaces, is solved. The solution of this linear program is then employed as initial guess for a non linear and non convex problem of programming, obtained applying both the 'mechanism' and the 'equilibrium' approaches to the same block system with no-tension and frictional interfaces. The optimiser used is based on the sequential quadratic programming. The gradients of the constraints required are provided directly in symbolic form. In this way the program easily converges to the optimal solution even for systems with many degrees of freedom. Various numerical analyses showed that the procedure allows a reliable investigation of the ultimate behaviour of jointed structures, such as stone masonry structures, under statical load conditions.
Creativity and the Structure of Tourism Destination Networks
Rodolfo Baggio 한국관광학회 2014 International Journal of Tourism Sciences Vol.14 No.1
Creativity and innovation have long been considered as fundamental factors in economic growth. This is especially true in tourism today, where intense and globalized competition put firms, groups and destinations under a very heavy pressure. In this contribution, after a brief introduction to the issue and its different facets, we adopt a social network perspective. In this framework, using a recently proposed measure, we analyze a number of destinations whose stakeholders networks are known. We compare them to a series of networks made of creative entities and assess the difference.
ANALYSIS OF AN ABSORPTION CHILLER DRIVEN BY THE HEAT RECOVERY ON A SOLID OXIDE FUEL CELL
GIOVANNI A. LONGO,PAOLO BAGGIO 대한설비공학회 2010 International Journal Of Air-Conditioning and Refr Vol.18 No.3
This paper studies an absorption machine driven by the heat recovered from a Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC). The absorption unit was first evaluated by a cycle analysis determining the sensitivity to the main boundary conditions and to the internal parameters. Then a specific simulation code of all the different devices of the absorption machine was developed to evaluate the performance and size of the unit together with its operating condition limits.

Images from 18F-DOPA Scan in Congenital Hyperinsulinism: Not Always a Clue for Diagnosis

Congenital hyperinsulinism (CHI) is the most common cause of persistent hypoglycaemia in childhood (Horm Res 70:65-72, 2008; J Clin Endocr Metab 93:869- 875, 2008). 18−Fluoro-L-dihydroxy-phenylalanine (18FDOPA) positron emission tomography (PET) can detect areas of increased activity in the pancreas and may differentiate focal from diffuse CHI (J Clin Endocr Metab 93:869-875, 2008; Radiology 253:216-222, 2009). We here report the case of a girl who complained of recurrent episodes of severe hypoglycaemia despite previous partial pancreatectomy. To evaluate the need for additional surgical intervention, we performed 18F-DOPA PET/ computed tomography (CT), which showed a focal lesion corresponding to the anatomical region of the pancreatic tail. On the other hand, abdominal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) clearly demonstrated that the 18F-DOPA uptake was in a loop of bowel occupying the previous surgical bed. Our case highlights that bowel uptake can be a possible pitfall in the interpretation of 18F-DOPA PET/CT in children affected by CHI, suggesting that when 18F-DOPA PET/CT results do not fit the clinical picture, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) may allow a more accurate correlation of the radiotracer activity with the underlying anatomical or pathological structure.
Antithrombotic Effect of Chikusetsusaponin IVa Isolated from Ilex paraguariensis (Maté)

The triterpene chikusetsusaponin IVa was isolated from the fruit of Ilex paraguariensis. Using biochemical and pharmacological methods, we demonstrated that chikusetsusaponin IVa (1) prolongs the recalcification time, prothrombin time, activated partial thromboplastin time, and thrombin time of normal human plasma in a dose-dependent manner, (2) inhibits the amidolytic activity of thrombin and factor Xa upon synthetic substrates S2238 and S2222, (3) inhibits thrombin-induced fibrinogen clotting (50% inhibition concentration, 199.4±9.1 μM), and (4) inhibits thrombin- and collagen-induced platelet aggregation. The results also indicate that chikusetsusaponin IVa preferentially inhibits thrombin in a competitive manner (Ki=219.6 μM). Furthermore, when administered intravenously to rats, chikusetsusaponin IVa inhibited thrombus formation in a stasis model of venous thrombosis, although it did not induce a significant bleeding effect. Chikusetsusaponin IVa also prolonged the ex vivo activated partial thromboplastin time. Altogether, these data suggest that chikusetsusaponin IVa exerts antithrombotic effects, including minor hemorrhagic events. This appears to be important for the development of new therapeutic agents
