        <P>Microglia are a major neuroglial component of the CNS, playing an important role as resident immunocompetent and phagocytic cells in the CNS in the event of injury and disease. To understand the role of microglia in the CNS in health and diseases, we have recently established an immortalized clonal cell line of human microglia, HMO6, from human embryonic telencephalon tissue by using a retroviral vector encoding v-myc. This immortalized microglia HMO6 cell line exhibits cell-type-specific antigens for microglia, including CD11b (Mac-1), CD68, CD86 (B7-2), HLA-ABC, HLA-DR, and RCA-1 lectin, and actively phagocytoses latex beads. © 2005 Wiley-Liss, Inc.</P>

        Dielectric and Fluorescence Study on Phase Transitions in Liquid Crystal 5CB and 8CB

        Successive phase transitions, isotropic(I)-nematic(N)-crystal(C) of 5CB (pentyl cyanobiphenyl) and I-N-smectic(Sm)-C of 8CB (octyl cyanobiphenyl) were studied by dielectric measurement and time-resolved uorescence spectroscopy. Dielectric constants in 5CB and 8CB are very similar and show a considerable change at the I-N transition and an abrupt decrease at the crystallization point. In uorescence spectra, a broad and intense band from excimers (dimers in the excited state) and a weak band from monomers are observed at around at 405 nm and 350 nm, respectively. The temperature dependence of uorescence spectra and lifetime show a gradual change before the melting point as a precursor of the rst-order transition, while only little change was observed at the N-I transition

      • Effect of PTFE contents in the Gas Diffusion Layers of Polymer Electrolyte-based Unitized Reversible Fuel Cells

        Polymer electrolyte-based unitized reversible fuel cells (URFCs) combine the functionality of a fuel cell and an electrolyzer in a single device. In this study, the influence of hydrophobic agent in the gas diffusion layer (GDL) of URFC was investigated. The titanium (Ti)-felt GDL which treated with different percent of PTFE emulsion was intensively tested with various humidification temperature conditions in the single cell of URFC. I-V performance curves and divided three overpotentials were compared and analyzed in the fuel cell mode. The electrolyzer performances were also evaluated with the I-V curves. Experimental results showed that the GDLs with high PTFE contents have better performance in the dry conditions. On the other hand, the increased PTFE contents accelerate flooding problem in the wet condition and it is related with rising concentration overpotential. The electrolyzer performances are almost same with different PTFE contents of GDL.

        Successful local use of heparin calcium for congested fingertip replants

        Background Conventional methods of external bleeding for congested fingertip replants exhibit notable problems, including uncontrollable bleeding and unpredictable survival of the replant. We have added a local injection of heparin calcium to the routine use of systemic heparinization for inducing external bleeding. We retrospectively examined patients who underwent external bleeding using our method. Methods Local subcutaneous injections of heparin calcium were made in 15 congested replants in addition to systemic heparinization. Each injection ranged from 500 to 5,000 U. The average duration of the injections was 4.1 days. Surgical outcomes were analyzed and compared with a control group of patients who underwent external bleeding without heparin calcium. Results The overall survival rate was 93.3%, which was higher than that of the control group (83.3%), but the difference was not statistically significant (P=0.569). The survival rate for subzones I and II by the Ishikawa subzone classification was 100%, whereas it was 87.5% in subzones III and IV. No statistically significant difference was observed. The rate of partial necrosis was 0% in subzones I and II, whereas it was significantly higher (66.7%) in subzones III and IV (P=0.015). The mean total blood loss via external bleeding was 588 g in 10 fingers. No patients required blood transfusion. Conclusions Congestion of a replanted fingertip can be successfully managed without blood transfusion by our method. Although complete relief from congestion in replants in subzones I and II is achievable, there is a higher risk of partial necrosis in subzones III and IV.

        Effects of Long-term Exposure to Black Carbon Particles on Growth and Gas Exchange Rates of Fagus crenata, Castanopsis sieboldii, Larix kaempferi and Cryptomeria japonica Seedlings

        To clarify the effects of black carbon (BC) particles on growth and gas exchange rates of Asian forest tree species, the seedlings of Fagus crenata, Castanopsis sieboldii, Larix kaempferi and Cryptomeria japonica were exposed to BC particles with sub-micron size for two growing seasons from 1 June 2009 to 11 November 2010. The BC particles deposited after the exposure to BC were observed on the foliar surface of the 4 tree species. At the end of the experiment, the amount of BC accumulated on the foliar surface after the exposure to BC aerosols were 0.13, 0.69, 0.32and 0.58 mg C m-2 total leaf area in F. crenata, C. sieboldii, L. kaempferi and C. japonica seedlings, respectively. In August 2010, the exposure to BC particles did not significantly affect net photosynthetic rate under any light intensity, stomatal diffusive conductance to water vapour (gs), stomatal limitation of photosynthesis,response of gs to increase in vapour pressure deficit and leaf temperature under light saturated condition in the leaves or needles of the seedlings. These results suggest that the BC particles deposited on the foliar surface did not reduce net photosynthesis by shading, did not increase leaf temperature by absorption of irradiation light, and did not induce plugging of stomata in the leaves or needles of the seedlings. There were no significant effects of BC particles on the increments of plant height and stem base diameter during the experimental period and the whole-plant dry mass at the end of the experiment. These results indicate that the exposure to BC particles with sub-micron size for two growing seasons did not significantly affect the growth and leaf or needle gas exchange rates of F. crenata, C. sieboldii,L. kaempferi and C. japonica seedlings.         Optical Method for Measuring Deposition Amount of Black Carbon Particles on Foliar Surface

        To perform quick measurements of black carbon (BC) particles deposited on foliar surfaces of forest tree species, we investigated an optical method for measuring the amount of BC extracted from foliar surfaces and collected on quartz fiber filters. The seedlings of Fagus crenata, Castanopsis sieboldii, Larix kaempferi and Cryptomeria japonica were exposed to submicron BC particles for one growing season (1 June to 7 December 2009). At the end of the growing season, the leaves or needles of the seedlings were harvested and washed with deionized water followed by washing with chloroform to extract the BC particles deposited on the foliar surfaces. The extracted BC particles were collected on a quartz fiber filter. The absorption spectrum of the filters was measured by spectrophotometer with an integrating sphere. To obtain the relationship between the absorbance of the filter and the amount of BC particles on the filter, the amount of BC particles on the filter was determined as that of elemental carbon (EC) measured by a thermal optical method. At wavelengths below 450 nm, the absorption spectrum of the filter showed absorption by biological substances, such as epicuticular wax, resulting in the low coefficient of determination ($R^2$) in the relationship between the amount of EC on the filter ($M_{EC}$, ${\mu}g\;C\;cm^{-2}$ filter area) and the absorbance of the filter. The intercept of the regression line between $M_{EC}$ and the absorbance of the filter at 580 nm ($A_{580}$) was closest to 0. There was a significant linear relationship between the $A_{580}$ and $M_{EC}$ ($R^2$=0.917, p<0.001), suggesting that the amount of BC particles collected on the filter can be predicted from the absorbance. This optical method might serve as a simple, fast and cost-effective technique for measuring the amount of BC on foliar surfaces.
