Vol.32 No.2
The rates of aquation of sparteine cobalt(II) halide and sparteine copper(II) halide were investigated in the citrate buffer solutions. The aquation of cobalt(II) complexes proceeds via D-mechanism and the catalytic effect of halide ions is not observed. The aquation of copper(II) complexes proceeds via $I_d$-mechanism and is catalyzed by the presence of cyanide and halide ions, and the aquation rate is pH dependent. The different mechanistic behavior of cobalt(II) complexes from corresponding copper(II) complexes seems to be attributed to the weakness of Co-N bond in the coordination sphere.

Most gas hydrates (GH) occur in ocean sediments. Global GH reserves are estimated to be $10^{13}{\sim}20{\times}10^{15}m^3$, which is nearly 1,000 times the amount of current world energy consumption. Methane hydrate (MH) has the potential to be developed into future natural gas resources to replace traditional oil and gas resources, and thus MH production technologies such as depressurization, inhibitor injection, thermal stimulation, and $CO_2-CH_4$ substitution need to be further developed. MH production, which is expected to be in test production until 2014 in Korea, is focused on the development of GH production technologies for use in the commercial production of methane gas. This study compares MH production technology and its ability to meet the twin goals of being both effective and environmentally friendly while taking into consideration the complex phenomena of GH decomposition.
Vol.37 No.4
The thermodynamic parameters (${\Delta}$G, ${\Delta}$H and ${\Delta}$S) of lanthanides(III)-benzoylformate complexes in aqueous solution have been determined in the ionic medium of 0.1M $NaClO_4$ at 25$^{\circ}C$, using pH and enthalpy titration method. The stability constants of the lanthanide(III)-benzoylformate complexes (1 : 1) agree well with the general relationships for the bidentate ligands (e.g., log${\beta}_1$ vs. p$K_a$). Thermodynamic evidences show that the oxygen atom in ketone group is coordinated along with the carboxylate group. It is ascribed to the increasing charge density on the oxygen atom in ketone group due to the conjugation effect in the benzoylformate ligand. Thermodynamic results also indicate that the complexes are stabilized by the enthalpy effect caused by the ionic interaction of metal-oxygen bond as well as the entropy effect.
