SARS-CoV-2 Antibody Response to the BNT162b2 mRNA Vaccine in Persons with Past Natural Infection

There are still no agreed guidelines on the vaccination of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) for previously infected patients. Here, we present two seropositive healthcare workers (HCWs) working in an isolation ward who recovered from COVID-19 in April 2020 and got vaccinated with BNT162b2 vaccine in March 2021. We have assessed the clinical course, vaccine-related adverse events, and antibody response after natural infection and after first and second dose vaccination. One of the two HCWs was asymptomatic during quarantine, but the other had mild upper respiratory infection symptoms 1 day before admission, and the symptoms continued for 9 days. There was no pneumonic infiltration in chest X-ray in both patients, and no COVID-19 specific treatment was administered. Total immunoglobulin antibody and neutralizing antibody to anti-spike protein receptorbinding domain of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 were confirmed to be present in both HCWs in blood tests performed at 2 weeks and 4 weeks after discharge. Antibody response to mRNA vaccination showed marked elevation after the first vaccination, which was 30–40 times higher than that of antibody titer after natural infection in each patient (83.2 U/mL vs. > 2,500 U/mL in patient 1; 61.6 U/mL vs. > 2,500 U/mL in patient 2). Signal inhibition rate of neutralizing antibodies was also increased to over 97%. Due to this increased effect, there was little difference in antibody levels after the first and second dose. Both patients 1 and 2 suffered more from adverse vaccine reactions after the second vaccination than from COVID-19 symptoms.

Parvimonas micra is frequently associated with periodontal disease as well as respiratory, gastrointestinal, and female genitourinary tract infections, but only rarely has it been reported as a pathogenic agent of infectious spondylodiscitis. We describe the case of a 38-year-old woman with spondylodiscitis caused by P. micra. P. micra was cultured from the patient`s blood and vertebral tissue. This case was treated with vertebral corpectomy followed by intravenous ampicillin-sulbactam for four weeks. Her symptoms and vital signs improved, and elevated inflammatory markers were normalized after treatment. (Korean J Med 2012; 82:632-636)

본 연구에서는 동결건조 사료와 일반 사료에 대한 개의 기호성을 섭취 행동에 따라 비교 분석하였다. 실험 대상은 총 개 4마리로, 대형견(Golden Retriever) 2마리와 소형견(Shih Tzu) 2마리로 구성하였다. 실험은 스트레스에 의한 변수를 최소화하기 위해 실험견의 생활공간에서 진행되었다. 또한, 허기에 의한 변수를 최소화하기 위해 실험 시간은 아침 사료 급여 후로 선정하였다. 실험에 사용된 동결건조 사료와 일반 사료는 각각 세 종류씩 선정하였으며, 섭취 시간, 산만함의 정도, 섭취 후 행동, 잔여 사료량, 그릇 탐색 횟수 등을 척도로 삼아 기호성 차이를 분석하였다. 그 결과 평균적으로 네 마리의 개 모두 동결건조 사료에 대한 기호성이 일반 사료보다 높았으며, 특히 섭취 시간에 대한 차이가 두드러지게 나타났다. In this study, dog preferences for freeze-dried feed and general feed were compared and analyzed according to intake behavior. The subjects of the experiment consisted of a total of 4 dogs, 2 large dogs (Golden Retriever) and 2 small dogs (Shih Tzu). The experiment was conducted in the living space of the experimental dog to minimize variables caused by stress. In addition, in order to minimize the variables due to hunger, the experimental time was selected after the morning feed benefit. Three types of freeze-dried feed and general feed used in the experiment were selected, and differences in preference were analyzed using intake time, degree of distraction, behavior after intake, residual feed amount, and number of vessel searches as measures. As a result, on average, all four dogs had a higher preference for freeze-dried feed than general feed, and in particular, the difference in intake time was noticeable.
어머니의 구강건강정보이해력이 유아 자녀의 구강건강상태와 행동에 미치는 영향

The purpose of this study was to examine how oral health literacy of mothers affect the oral health status of their preschool children. The subjects were 233 mothers and their preschool children who are between 5 and 6 years old. They were selected according to the convenience sampling method. The individual self-administered questionnaire was used for the mother’s survey while the children were interviewed using structured questionnaire to examine their oral health status and behavior. According to study results, the number of decayed primary teeth and the number of decayed and filled primary teeth had a statistically significant negative correlation with the oral health literacy of the mother, the children’s oral health knowledge, attitude and behavior (COHKAB), and the mother’s oral health management behavior. Hierarchical multiple regression analysis was performed after including general characteristics variables, the COHKAB and the mother’s oral health management behavior. Meanwhile, mother’s oral health literacy had a statistically influence on children’s oral health status. The higher the mother’s oral health literacy level, the lower the number of decayed and filled primary teeth were. The findings suggest that efforts to improve the oral health status of preschool children should consider mother’s oral health literacy as an important factor. Therefore, the effective intervention and education programs are necessary to enhance mother’s oral health literacy.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of chronic disease on oral health behavior. Methods: The subjects were 317 adults over 30-years old living in urban and rural areas. They were selected by convenience sampling method and filled out the self-reported questionnaire. The questionnaire consisted of general characteristics, dental treatment, chronic disease, and oral health behavior including oral health self-care behavior and professional oral health care. Results: The self-care oral health behavior and the professional oral health care had a negative correlation with the chronic diseases. Especially, the self-care oral health behavior and the professional oral health care had a statistically significant negative correlation with hypertension and osteoporosis. Multiple regression analysis was performed after including general characteristics, dental treatment, chronic disease. Meanwhile the presence of chronic disease had a significant influence on the self-care oral health behavior and the professional oral health care. Hypertension and Osteoporosis were the most influential factors of chronic diseases and had a significant influence on the oral health behavior. In conclusion, the chronic diseases aggravated the oral health behavior practice. Conclusions: presence of chronic disease affects oral health behavior. Therefore, the effective intervention and education programs related to oral health care are necessary to enhance adult`s oral health behavior and total health. The continuous follow-up study will determine the causal relationship between oral health behavior and the presence of chronic disease.
공압식 박동형 심실보조장치에서 공압관 내 공기압에 따른 박출량 추정

심실보조장치는 심장질환자에게 심장이식까지의 가교로서 사용된다. 공압식 박동형 심실보조장치를 체내에 이식했을 때, 심실보조장치를 통과하는 혈류가 느려질 경우 혈전이 발생할 수 있기 때문에 박출량을 측정하는 것이 중요하다. 심실보조장치의 박출량을 측정하기 위해 각종 센서를 함께 이식할 경우, 감염의 위험성이 커지기 때문에 본 연구에서는 체외에서 측정할 수 있는 공압관 내 압력을 통해 심실보조장치의 상태를 추정하고자 한다. 체외실험을 통해 공압식 박동형 심실보조장치의 공압관 내 차동압력과 심실보조장치 박출량의 상관관계를 계산하였다. Pearson correlation coefficient r=0.623 으로 두 값의 상관관계가 높으며, 박출량 추정값과 측정값에서 오차가 있었지만 공기 분자의 이동에 따른 식을 개발하여 박출량 추정의 정확성을 높일 수 있을 것으로 보인다. A ventricular assist device (VAD) is used for bridge to heart transplantation and heart diseases. Knowing the status of a pneumatic pulsatile VAD when implanting it into the body is important: when the velocity of blood flow through the VAD is slow, a thrombus may occur, and thrombosis can be fatal to a patient. In order to determine the state of a VAD, various sensors need to be implanted. Because this introduces the risk of infection and difficulties with sensor management, we developed a method for estimating the state of a VAD indirectly via the pressure in an air tube that can be measured in vitro. We compared the measured values to in vitro experimental results. The estimated and measured values showed some errors, but the accuracy can be improved by refining the estimation process to minimize the risk of infection.
