A new combat uniform is improved for added combat safety with various functions such as survivability, battle conformity and a camouflage performance system. Camouflage performance is an important factor in terms of combat survivability since it makes identification difficult and provide security. The combat uniform is worn under extreme conditions (exposure to ultraviolet light, sweat and friction) and an excellent color fastness to repeated washing is required. In this study, we investigated the color management, durability and discoloration of new combat uniform fabric with a digital pattern for camouflage performance to provide preliminary color management data. We examined color differences between standard fabric and mass-produced combat uniform fabrics, color differences between each military supply contract firm and color changes in combat uniforms after 60 washing cycles. The slight color differences between standard fabric and mass-produced combat uniform fabrics were tolerable under quality criteria of Republic of Korea Ministry of National Defense. However, the differences between the military supply contract firms were recognizable to the naked eye and increased with repeated washing. Continuous research on color fastness under repeated washing and color management is required to standardize reliability from each military supply contract firm for the daytime performance of a combat uniform``s camouflage.

A force support system is composed of capital components such as combat equipments, supplies and so on to enable constant fighting power capability. Private technology level evaluation is on the rise as an important spin-on method in force support systems, which requires 92% of total munitions requirements, to obtain superior private technology. The evaluation of the private sector technology level on Korean force support systems has been conducted for the first time as follows: this research chose 38 items to be acquired within 2-3 years and grouped either identical or similar technology among those 38 items. A technology evaluating method was established based on the analysis of domestic and foreign technology level evaluations. Evaluation was performed by a Delphi survey from 180 private and military experts. To obtain an objective index and raise political availability, a technology system map and standard document were developed and applied to all 38 items.

Purpose: Current testing method for drying rate used in military textiles has different results according to the public testing institute. So the purpose of this study was to suggest the alternative method which secure the reliability of the drying rate test. Methods: We measured the drying rate by various test methods for military clothes 14 species including quick drying function and compared the test results. Also, the collected data through the test was analyzed using one-way ANOVA. The p-value of results was compared by various testing institutions. Results: The results of this study are as follow; A deviation occurred among the testing institutions in original test method(KS K 0815). Whereas it is verified that there is no deviation among the institutions in 5% significance level by another test method(ISO 17617). Also it would increase work efficiency by reducing the testing time required to test by using ISO 17617. Conclusion: Based on the results, we can suggest the reliable test method of the drying rate.

It is important to compare and analyze digital camouflage from different countries to promote the continuous development of a camouflage combat uniform. This effort should lead to developing a camouflage pattern suitable for the domestic environment and expand its performance of night camouflage. This study investigates digital camouflage by comparing camouflage fabrics sampled from Korea and eight other countries (USA, UK, Singapore, Croatia, Colombia, and Mongolia) in terms of textile, near-infrared reflectivity of colors, and color distribution. First, the fabric construction of camouflage from Korea, UK, US, Singapore, Span, and Croatia were all characterized by derivative plain weaves, while derivative twill weaves were generally used in Croatia and Mongolia. It is assumed that derivative plain weaves are adopted to improve the tearing strength of fine yarns. However, twill weaves enhance the flexibility of coarse yarn fabrics. Next, reflectivity change was analyzed based on camouflage color. The reflectivity of a combat uniform in Korea, Colombia, Croatia, and UK increased before 780nm in the visible light range, but remained consistent from 800nm which falls under the near-infrared range. In contrast, camouflage samples in Mongolia, Span, Singapore and USA showed a gradual increase of reflectivity in the near-infrared range. Finally, the color distribution analysis of digital camouflage found that camouflage of countries with desert or woodland combat settings dominantly contained brown colors. It indicates the color pattern consideration of different geographic regions is important to determine camouflage performance. This research involves basic study that will have implications for developing patterns and colors suitable for the South Korean environment and expand its use as night camouflage that helps achieve continuous improved camouflage performance.
