A new signal processing technique is applied to four-cylinder compression ignition engine for the diagnosis of power faults inside the cylinders. This technique utilizes two-sided directional power spectra (dPS) of complex vibration signals measured from engine blocks as the patterns for engine cylinder power faults. The dPSs feature that they give not only the frequency contents but also the directivity of the engine block motion. For the automatic detection / diagnosis of cylinder power faults, pattern recognition method using multi-layer neural networks is employed. Experimental results show that the success rate for diagnosis of cylinder power faults using dPSs is higher than that using the conventional one-sided power spectra. The proposed technique is also tested to check the robustness In the sensor position and the engine rotational speed.<br/>

This paper presents the probabilistic analysis for fatigue life of Glass/Epoxy laminates with impact-induced damage. For this, a series of impact tests were performed using instrumented impact testing machine. Then, tensile and fatigue tests carried out so as to generate post-impact residual strength and fatigue life. Two Parameter Weibull distribution was used to fit the residual strength and fatigue life data of composite laminates. The variance of residual strength decreased with increasing of impact energy. The fatigue life of impacted laminates was greatly reduced by impact energy and this trend depended on applied stress amplitude. Also, the variation of fatigue life was gradually decreased with the applied stress amplitude.

To improve the shock resistance of the microdrive under non-operating conditions, an isolator was attached to the contacting part of the microdrive. Through FE analysis, design parameters for satisfying the allowable acceleration level of the spendle motor bearing part were presented, which is a most possible critical part of the microdrive.
