Vol.41 No.2
The purpose of the present paper is to examine the Korean ethnological collections and exhibition at the National Museum of Natural History to illustrate the current issues of cultural representation that surround museum collections and exhibitions. The reason for selecting the Smithsonian`s natural history museum is that the museum not only has a large number of Korean ethnological collections but also it just opened a new permanent exhibition of Korean culture. Two Korean collections, the Bernadou and Knez collections, were examined, followed by the analysis of the exhibition at the museum of natural history. In close analysis, the Korea collections and the exhibition reflected American perceptions on Korea at respectively different times. In the late 19th century, as a distant `other`, Korea was perceived as a fertile ground for securing many exotic artefacts. Unlike China and Japan which were considered to be much more contaminated by the western influence, Korea was viewed as a virgin country which still possessed the exotic, authentic and traditional culture intact. Bernadou collected artifacts believing that they would reveal a far different culture from that of the west. In 1950, Korea became well known to Americans because of the Korean War. America took a part in the war with a noble cause of protecting the free world of capitalism by stopping the spread of communism. Coming through such experiences, `Korea` was reinvented as a Cold War bastion of belligerent polarities between two powerful world views. This is the reason why many Americans still remember Korea in relation to the Cold War context. However, entering into the 1960s, Korea launched an ambitious economic development plan, transforming her economy and society. Knez` collection was made within this framework of history. During the 1960s and 70s, modernization theory was prevailing in the American intellectual circles, and Knez collected artifacts to show this changing aspects of Korean culture. Although Korea has transformed from a hermit nation to a modernizing country, the fact that Korea is the only one country left that is still divided is the reason why the image of Korea as the Cold War bastion resists all attempts to change it. It is evident that this persisting image of Korea still lingers in the minds of Americans when they view the exhibition at the Smithsonian Museum.

In this paper, a brief history of applied anrhtopology is outlined The framework for the discussion was adopted from John van Willigen's classificatory scheme concerning the developmental stages of applied anthropology. Those stage are as follows : ①The Predisciplinary Stage, ②The Applied Ethnology Stage, ③The Fedral Service Stage, ④The Roll-expension, Value-explicit Stage, ⑤The Policy Research Stage. Discussions in this paper also include the relationship between theoretical and applied aspects of anthropology and ethical problems involving applied anthropology. In addition, debates regarding some problems in intervention are also included.
