A goal-oriented task is one of complex tasks in which the user wants as a result a sequence of steps to accomplish the goal. Planning has been the area that deals with this kind of problem in traditional AI. However, there have not been many studies on embedding a planning modulo into the multi-agent framework, and consequently a plan rule was generally not able to exploit the capabilities of application agents. This paper proposes a hybrid multi-agent system that integrates the planning with the agent execution. The plan rule not only contains the traditional declarative knowledge, but also utilizes the functions of other application agents. This mechanism enhances the flexibility of plan rule generation, and also prevents the planner from managing duplicate knowledge about the capabilities of application agents.

An intelligent agent system is a software element that accomplishes a task on behalf of the user autonomously and effectively. An agent can be built from the scratch, or by using and modifying existing application programs. Building an agent by exploiting from existing programs provides the advantage of saving time and resources needed to build a new agent, but there are some difficulties of doing this due to the heterogeneity residing in many applications. In this paper, we present five ways of building an agent from various kinds of existing application programs. Each method depends on the availability of the source codes, APIs, or the binary codes of application programs. Advantages and disadvantages of each method are compared, and a prototype agent system that is built from these methods is presented in the domain of a desktop system playing the role of a computer secretary. The main contribution of this paper lies in the provision of consistent and uniform ways of building an agent from existing applications.
