Because alcohol or ether contains oxygen and has ability improve octane number compared with gasoline, it is used as a clean fuel for low emissions and performance improvement. But it is necessary to adjust fuel supply system and operating conditions due to low heating value, high latent heat of vaporization of fuel. Therefore, this experiment is conducted to investigate for studying the effects of equivalence ratio and spark timing on intake mixture temperature, MBT, torque, brake specific fuel consumption, brake thermal efficiency as a basic performance, and conbustion pressure and combustion duration for combustion analysis. And with measurement of emissions like NOX, CO and HC, low emission characteristics and operating conditions for performance improvement with gasoline-alcohol blends are also considered.<br/>

As a part of further investigations of possibilities to use a spark-plug as a sensor indicating processes taking place in the cylinder of an internal combustion engine we carried out the experimental study of a misfire detection. A new phenomenon -'effect of modulation of breakdown voltage' - was observed. This phenomenon lets us to have a new view on the inner-cylinder processes.<br/>

The object of this research is to detect abnormal combustion like misfire and to keep the engine performance in the optimal operating state. Development of a new system therefore could be applied to a real car. To realize this, the spark-plug in a conventional ignition system is used as a misfire detection sensor and breakdown voltage is analyzed. In this research, bias voltage(about 3kV) was applied to the electrodes of spark-plug and breakdown voltage signal is obtained. This breakdown voltage signal is analyzed and found that a combustion phenomena in engine cylinder has close relationship with harmonic coefficient K which was introduced in this research. Newly developed combustion diagnostic method(breakdown voltage signal analysis) from this research can be used for the combustion diagnostic and combustion control system in a real car.
