This essay uses the conception of materialism as a framework and examines three principle categories such as ‘colony,’ ‘geography’ and ‘history.’ One of the primary objectives of this essay is to offer explanations to the cultural forms, practices and organizations that are observed in postcolonial societies today. In effort to overcome the limitations of postcolonial criticisms, I suggest a conceptual tool, ‘Asia as a Strategy.’ It is an attempt to relocate the field of study within Asia to engage with the issue of post-coloniality. My call for turning our scholarly interests to Asia is to overcome our deep-seated jealousy and hatred toward the West by formulating an analytical model that differs from colonialism. Only after we come to terms with our jealousy and hatred can we finally free ourselves from the limitations and make meaningful alliances. If the problem in postcolonial studies has to do with its obsessive criticism on the West, the central concern in the discourse of globalization can be identified as its lack of, or forgetting of the connection between globalization and colonialism. Unless we fully understand the trajectories of colonialism and imperialism we cannot possibly begin to discuss the criteria from which globalization emerges, let alone the contradictions it accompanies. What I propose here is a progressive imagination that combats globalization, a method which I believe is conducive to post-coloniality. An attempt to examine globalization without considering post-colonial movements is nothing more than a cover-up of the workings of neo-imperialism. If the coming of the global era signals a new world in which peaceful coexistence is plausible we should not tolerate any form of imperialist tyranny. Furthermore, we should remind ourselves of the sufferings and violations that imperialism has caused humanity. Such a self-reflective criticism will serve as a moment of departure, a moment toward post-colonial movements.

This paper aims at tracing intellectual discourse and social practices stretching over 20 years marked by the editorial association of a Taiwanese journal, Taiwan: A Radical Quarterly in Social Studies, the progressive and critical intellectual organization that has been calling for critical engagement of intellectuals in Taiwanese society. This is a task of viewing reflectively upon the development of Taiwanese society, politics, economy and culture in a critical standpoint. Through this task we look upon the cases of failures of the past governments, historic errors such as excluding non?Taiwanese origins under the banner of Taiwanization, denying democratic accountability while calling for democratization, oppressing diversity while proclaiming pluralization, pursuing liberalization and globalization with no respect for justice and equality. Through this critical reflection and participation, this association has been seeking to form a positive circle between theories and practices by recognizing the complexity of reality.
