Low-Delay Broadband Satellite Communications with High-Altitude Unmanned Aerial Vehicles
2018 Journal of communications and networks Vol.20 No.1
The large number of users and the long propagation delayof communication satellites make it difficult to deploy a randomaccess scheme that performs well in terrestrial networks. The aimof this paper is to demonstrate that a relay architecture with unmannedaerial vehicles (UAV) between the ground and satellitescan facilitate satellite access with a low overhead. We considera TDMA-based two-level relay structure, in which users transmitdata to UAVs through a random access scheme, and the UAVs forwardit to the satellite with either a coordinated or uncoordinatedaccess scheme. We show that the coordinated access for the UAVto-satellite links can substantially improve the throughput and delayperformance. We conclude that a proper scheme for resourceallocation between ground-to-UAVs and UAVs-to-satellite is criticalto optimize the relay network, which includes the UAV altitude, and should be based on traffic demand and the number of UAVsdeployed.

As the mobile traffic explodes, direct device-to-devicecommunications attract much attention as one of next-generationtechnologies to increase the spatial spectrum efficiency in multichannelwireless networks. On the other hand, as battery-poweredmobile devices interrupt user experience due to limited battery capacity, wireless power transfer has emerged as a convenient andperpetual power supply. However, current circuit technologies cannotsupport both energy harvesting and information decoding atthe same time, and thus the time-division-multiple-access approachis often used for either data transmission or power transfer at atime, which requires joint scheduling of data transmissions andwireless power transfer. In this paper, we investigate the jointscheduling problem of multi-channel data transmissions and wirelesspower transfer, formulate the joint problem using a unifiedframework, and identify new difficulties in efficient resource allocation. We also develop a preliminary solution that achieves goodempirical performance in single-hop D2D network scenarios.
