The anatomical diagnoses derived from the adventitious buds, the dimples, and their surroundings, which break out often in the Populus alba × P. glandulosa, were investigated by the light microscope. In the anatomical structure derived from the adventitious buds, the vessel seldom occured, the diameters of the cell were smaller and the wall thicknesses were thicker than those of the normal woods. The wood fibers around the adventitious buds were crooked, frequently had the septa, and the adjacent rays showed the multiple rows. The wood fibers of the dimples were extremely crooked from pith to the hark direction and the rays showed the multiple rows. The vessels in the line-like discoloration zone around the adventitious buds and the dimples formed the traumatic tyloses.

To study the wood quality factors of Populus nigra × maxanowirzii known a ralaidly growing species, the variations of green moisture contents. hulk density, wood fibre dimensions, microfibril angles, and number of leaf knot in stem wood were investigated. The heartwood contained a higher moisture content than the corresponding sapwood. Bulk density in radial patterns variations decrease outward from the pith, then increase toward the bark. The wood-fiber length and diameters had somewhat smaller values than on Populus alba × glandulosa or Populus euramericana. The microfibril angles decreased rapidly toward the outside, and their mean values were about 16 degree. The grain angles run nearly parallel to the cell axies. Dumber of leaf knot showed a fluctural change above ground level to a point near the base of the crown and then increased rapidly to the top of tree and average number of leaf knot varied exclusively from tree to tree.

In order of obtain the information on wood quality of the Populus nigra x maximowiczii the distributions of crystalliferous substancess, tyloses and tension wands were examined through light microsropy or scanning electron microscapy. 1. The erystalliferous subtance, presumably calcium oxalate, partially occurred in vessel elements of heartwood, and sporadically in ray parenchyma, but not in the wand fibers. The types of crystalliferous subtances were mainly crystal sand. 2-3 ㎛ in diameter. 2. The tyloaes arranged in a ladder-like seriea were sporadically formed in the vessel elements of heartwood. 3. Although the woods were cut tram the straightly grown stem without any evident disorientation with respect to gravitational axis, single or group of gelatinous fibers were irregularly distributed among normal wood fibers.

This study was carried cut to investigate the variation of the bulk density in horizontal sequences or, the stems of four species (B. costata, B. Schmidtii, B. daviarica, & B. errnanii) among genus Betula and the relationship between the bulk density and same anatomical factors. The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1. The variation of bulk density in horizontal sequence showed three typical changing patterns. B. costata pattern, B. schmidtii pattern, & B. ermanii pattern: e.g. the first is bulk density increased rapidly front pith towards the bark and attain a maximum value, and thereafter decreased towards bark, the second bulk density attained a maximum value with the rapid increment and then decreased immediately, and the third bulk density increased slowly in early stage and then settled on the whole. 2. B. schmidrii pattern had riot correlation between the characteristics of wood structure and the bulk density, but B. ermanii pattern was correlative between ahem. 3. The representative bulk density have found in the mature wood of D.A.H. among sample trees.
