Palmer의 『가르칠 수 있는 용기』에 나타난 성인교육자 역할 고찰

본 연구의 목적은 Palmer의『가르칠 수 있는 용기』를 중심으로 성인교육자는 어떤 존재이며, 어떤 역할을 해야 하는지를 평생교육적 관점에서 탐색하는 데 있다. 이를 위하여 본 연구는 Palmer의 교육론의 특징을 정리하고, 그의 교육론에 나타난 성인교육자의 역할을 분석하였다. 연구결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. Palmer의 교육론에 나타난 성인교육자의 역할은 성인학습자의 전인적 모델로서의 역할, 학습자와 파트너십을 가진 공동학습자로서의 역할, 소명의식을 발견한 권위자로서의 역할, 주제 중심 학습공동체 지도자로서의 역할, 역설을 통한 연결자로서의 역할, 상황적 지식의 생산자 및 실천자로서의 역할, 전문적 학습공동체에 참여하는 사회변혁자로서의 역할로 나타났다. 이러한 연구 결과는 기존의 연구에서 성인 학습자의 특징, 학습 유형, 학습지도의 목적에 따라 성인교육자의 역할이 달라지는 것은 유사하게 나타났지만, 성인교육자의 역할이 성인학습자의 전인적 모델로서 분열되지 않는 자아를 기초로 하여 학습자와 함께 주제 중심 모델의 학습공동체를 형성하고, 사회 변혁자로서 일치의 전문적 학습공동체에 참여하여 계속 성장, 실천한다는 점에서 차별성을 보였다. The purpose of this article was to review critically the current literature for the role of adult educators from a lifelong learning perspective. This study provided an overview of the characteristics of Parker J. Palmer’s educational theory, with a focus on what he discussed as being the role of adult educators. The findings of this study indicated that the adult educators were responsible for providing a holistic model for the learners, taking the role as a co-participant with the learners, an authority that reveals his or her calling, a leader of a subject-oriented learning community, a connector by use of paradoxes, a practitioner based on the acquisition of situated knowledge, and a transformer that participated within the community. Such results were similar to the previous studies in that the adult educators’ roles vary according to the adult learners’ characteristics, learning styles, and learning objectives. This study established the following findings. The adult educators’ role based on the learners’ holistic learning model and undivided ego serves to form a subject-oriented learning community, as well as to participate, develop, and practice the formation of learning communities as a social transformer.
