Vol.32 No.2

The purpose of this study was to comprehensively analyze the multi-faceted attributes related to the self-esteem which street dancers displayed over twelve weeks of controlled observation. The data collected included in-depth interviewing of participants and noted observations of nonparticipating observers, working at private dancing academies. The collected materials were analyzed using qualitative research methods and produced using polygonal analyses. Continual examinations and observations of members and ample consultations with colleagues added and verified credibility for the study. The study found that visual media; this included but was not limited to television, mass media, immersion and observed interest from acquaintances gave the participants the opportunity to develop similar interest in dancing. The observed individuals who subsequently took up dancing were noted as developing relationships with other street dancers and related groups. Conversations driven by mutual interests ranged on topics, including job satisfactions, self regulatory behavior, implementation of nicknames and both expectations and concerns for the future. These results had shown both dancing and emergence into dancing culture to have an effect on the participant``s consciousness and self-observed purpose in life. The implementation of nicknames, thus creating alter egos reinforced the involved individual``s sense of self. A clear distinction was observed related to individuals who chose to go without nicknames. The former individuals tended to show more self-worth and stronger self esteems. Popularization of street dance had a strong potential to create possibilities for the cultural development.

Vol.28 No.3

The purpose of this study was to examine subcultural characteristics and functions of teachers’ recreational volleyball club. For the purpose, this study selected 7 participants from a recreational volleyball club(so called Choi-Kang volley) in the Kyungnam area, using a combination of purposive and snowball sampling. Participatory observation and in-depth interview methods were employed to collect data, and text analyses were conducted. The results are followed. First, subcultural characteristics of teachers’ volleyball club show traditionalism, symbolism, and interconversion. The traditionalism means that research participants have upheld the tradition to keep the recreational club for a long time, and the symbolism means that the recreational club members consider new comers’ personalities is more important than their skill levels, make the recreational club more social capitalized through social networks, and regard their club as a representing volley ball club for Kyungnam area. Furthermore, emotional exchanges with family members represent the symbolism of the volleyball club. Second, using the frame of Merton, the subcultural functions of the volleyball club were divided and analyzed into descriptive and latent positive functions and latent negative functions in terms of behavioral intentions and behavioral results. Descriptive positive functions are related to external rewards(skill improvement) and internal rewards(stress relief, a sense of achievement), and latent positive functions are associated with information exchange and the extension of social networks. Conflicts due to differences of skill levels are considered latent negative functions.

Vol.28 No.4

The purpose of this study is to identify the causal model of Korean dance participants" perception of Heung, leisure engagement and serious leisure. The subjects of this study were 600 females in their 40-70’s who have participated in Korean dance classes of culture centers. Multiple regression analysis was performed for the analysis of the model to examine the effect of the Korean dance participants’ perception of Heung on the leisure engagement and the serious leisure, and the structural equation model analysis was performed by Amos 19.0 statistical program. The results are as follows. In the causal relation between the perception of Heung in Korean dance and the serious leisure, the perception of Heung in Korean dance has a significant effect on the serious leisure. Specifically, it can be seen that there is a significant direct/indirect influence on the effect resolution of the path coefficient of the research hypothesis on the basis of the final model analysis results. This result confirms that the feelings such as stress relieving, emotional/physical health, and healing through Korean dance activities lead to the sustainability of leisure activities and satisfaction. In the causal relation between the leisure engagement of Korean dance and the serious leisure, it can be seen that the leisure engagement of Korean dance has a significant effect on the serious leisure. This confirms that self-confidence, health, immersion into activities and the development of challenge that Korean dance participants experience through Korean dance activities increase individual satisfaction, perseverance, endeavor, and passion for dance and sustain leisure activities.
