In this study, under large scale yielding conditions crack propagation is found to governed by parameters based on the J-integral or on the crack opening displacement. but initiation of crack propagation of ductile material seems to be controlled by just on parameter that is the strain. The relationship between the critical value of J-integral and the local fracture strain in uniaxial tensile test in the region of maximum reduction in area. Therefore, the fundamental theorectical equation by the proposed elastic-plastic fracture toughness and the local fracture strain has a merit, in comparison with the ASTM method, which can measure by using the load-displacement curve and the specimens in tenslie test.

The fracture resistance curve is one of most important and design techniques employed in nuclear pressure vessel structures. This study is to evaluate the J-R curve characterisitcs for the SA508C-3 by the unloading compliance method and load ratio analysis. The effect of strain aging for the exponential correlation of the J-R curve in this metal are investigated at room temperature, 200℃ and 300℃. The load ratio analysis method can evaluate the J-R curve by using the simple tension load-displacement curve only without the repeat of the unloading and loading. Therefore, the analysis by the proposed load ratio method has a merit, in comparison with the unloading compliance method, which can measure the crack length without the precision measurement equipment.

This study verified the relationship between fracture mechanics parameters(ΔK, K_max) and X-ray parameters (σ_r, B) for SG365 steel at elevated temperature up to 300℃. The fatigue crack propagation test were carried out and X-ray diffraction technique according to crack length direction was applied to fatigue fractured surface. The residual stress on the fracture surface was found to increase in low ΔK region, reach to a maximum value at a certain value of K_max or ΔK and then decrease. Residual stress was independent on stress ratio by arrangement of ΔK and half value breadth was independent by the arrangement of K_max. The equation of σ_r - ΔK was established by the experimental data. Therefore, fracture mechanics parameters could be estimated by the measurement of X-ray parameters.

In this investigation, the elastic plastic fracture toughness of this material is evaluated by the unloading compliance method according to the ASTM E8l3-97 and E1152-97 method on the smooth and side groove In specimens. The effect of smooth and side groove is studied on the elastic plastic fracture toughness. The side grooved specimen is very useful in estimation of the $J_{IC}$. Because it is much easier than the smooth specimen to the onset of the ductile tearing by the R curve method. Besides. it improves the accuracy of toughness values, decreases the scattering of them and crack tunneling effect and shear lip by the side groove.
