The advantages of lead-acid battery are relatively low expense, long life span, durability, and the commercial availability of the technology. The battery component for real time simulator has not been provided yet. This paper develops a RTDS (Real Time Digital Simulator) component for lead-acid battery and analyses in real time. The component of lead-acid battery is modeled with characteristics of charging and discharging, SOC (State Of Charge), and temperature. The real time simulation results of the model component are very close to the real lead-acid battery property. This component will be applied to the battery energy storage system for analysis of operational characteristics.

Recently, the small scale photovoltaic (PV) electronic devices are drawing attention as the upcoming PV generation system. The PV system is commonly used in small scale PV applications such as LED lighting and cell phone. This paper proposes photovoltaic output sensorless (POS) maximum power point tracking (MPPT) control for a small scale charging system of PV-nickel metal hydride battery using field-programmable gate array (FPGA) controller. A converter is connected to a small scale PV cell and battery, and performs the POS MPPT at the battery terminal current instead of being at the PV cell output voltage and current. The FPGA controller and converter operate based on POS MPPT method. The experimental results show that the nickel metal hydride battery is charged by the maximum PV output power.

The output power from renewable energy sources fluctuates because of weather variations. This paper proposes an effective power quality control strategy of renewable energy source-based dispersed power generation system using photovoltaic (PV) system and supercapacitor. A supercapacitor is connected to the DC bus of PV power generation system for power quality control of the grid-connected renewable energy source-based dispersed power generation system. The results of simulation using PSCAD/EMTDC demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. The proposed system reduces the fluctuations of grid-connected renewable power system and improves the utilization of PV system.

A new high voltage direct current (HVDC) system from Jindo-to-Seojeju and 80 ㎿ wind farms will be installed in Jeju-island in the near future. The real time simulation for Jeju power system is needed for analysing newly installed systems in advance. This paper provides real time simulation techniques for Jeju power system using a real time digital simulator (RTDS). Simulation results show the frequency and power output variations under variable wind speed patterns of each wind farm.

This paper describes a design of grid-simulator for experiment of transient stability of grid-connected renewable energy system. A transient analysis of renewable energy system has been researched by a simulation, because direct connection of renewable energy system and real utility is dangerous and it is hard to produce the transient grid condition. If a grid-simulator is used in the transient stability experiment, the transient grid condition might be generated easily with reference data and there is no impact on the grid. The grid-simulator composed of a back-to-back converter was designed and simulated with PSCAD/EMTDC to verify its operational characteristics.

Due to enhanced demands on quality, security and reliability of the electric power energy system, a microgrid has become a subject of special interest. In this paper, output characteristics of energy storage system (ESS) with an electric double layer capacitor (EDLC) and battery energy storage system (BESS) of a renewable energy based microgrid were analyzed under grid-connected and islanded operation modes. The microgrid which consists of photovoltaic and wind power turbine generators, diesel generator, ESS with an EDLC, BESS and loads was modeled using real time digital simulator. The results present the effective control patterns of the microgrid system.

Converter per photovoltaic module (CPM) system has been researched to increase the efficiency of photovoltaic (PV) power generation system. The stability and efficiency of PV system might be different according to the connection structure of CPMs. Differences between series and parallel connection of CPMs for PV power generation system were analyzed in this paper. Boost type CPM was used to control maximum power of each PV module. CPMs were connected in series, and parallel to compare the PV output power according to the converter connection. More effective connection of CPMs is proposed by the simulation considering abnormal operation of converter of the PV system.

The operation of permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) type wind power generation system (WPGS) can be affected by the utility condition. Consequently, transient condition of utility should be analyzed for the safe and reliable operation of WPGS. This paper presents transient analysis results of a PMSG type WPGS using real time digital simulator (RTDS). A fault condition was applied to the transient analysis of PMSG type WPGS as the transient grid condition. The simulation results were analyzed to show the operational characteristic of PMSG type WPGS under the transient phenomenon of utility.
