Vol.76 No.-
When we study about St. Thomas’ teaching on the practical reason as a primary source of natural law(lex naturalis), it is very important that we examine the relations St. Thomas’ teaching with Aristotle’s the practical reason that influences absolutely on his teaching. Then, there are several interpreters’ estimations on Aristotle’s influence in the St. Thomas teaching about this. Then, this reveals generally two different forms. One is that St. Thomas’ teaching on the practical reason as a primary source of natural law attribute to Aristotle’s teaching and St. Thomas teaching is based on Aristotle’s the practical reason. Therefore, this interpretation reveals that the philosophical harmony or synthesis is successfully evolved in St. Thomas’ teaching on the practical reason as a primary source of natural law. The other is that although St. Thomas’ teaching on the the practical reason as a primary source of natural law apparently looks similar, Virtually those are very different teaching and distort deeply Aristotle’s teaching about the practical reason. then, these interpreters insist that it failed actually that the philosophical harmony or synthesis between Aristotle’s teaching and the teaching of Christianity through St. Thomas’ teaching on the practical reason as a primary source of natural law. On this, first, I will examine into the natural law as a ‘naturalis,’ Here, above all, I will consider Anthony Kenny’s and Alasdair MacIntyre’s assertions, And then, I will refuge against their assertions by centering about Harry V. Jaffa, Werner W. Jaeger’s allegations. Second, I examine into the natural law as a ‘lex. ’ Here, first, I will inquire into Thomas J. Higgins’ and Germain G. Grisez’s assertions. And then I will refuge against these by centering about Harry V. Jaffa, Denis J. M. Bradley, J. Owens, Mark F. Johnson’s allegations. Therefore, I will maintain that although St. Thomas teaching on the the practical reason as a primary source of natural law is apparently based on Aristotle’s the practical reason, It actually differs with Aristotle’s teaching and it distorts or transforts deeply Aristotle’s original intention. Thus, I conclude that St. Thomas’ transformation or distortion derive from his theological attitude that interprets Aristotle’s teaching in the light of the Christian belief.
