The recent rise of medical tourists coming to Korea has brought a concomitant demand for, and interest in, healthcare interpreter services in the country. The sudden boom in medical tourism has been driven partly by the government, which recently removed regulatory barriers to healthcare providers attracting international patients and provided administrative support for healthcare providers, medical tourists and medical travel agents. In addition, the government recently supported the development of a medical interpreter training program called the ATPHI, thereby changing the training landscape of this field. The 200-hour training program differs widely from the traditional programs, most of which target those seeking to become 'medical tour coordinators' and focus largely on textbook knowledge. Despite the recent signs of progress, however, a number of issues on healthcare interpreting remain unaddressed. This study suggests that one of the most effective ways to deal with those issues is to introduce a special bill on healthcare interpreting, which may cover a range of topics including the recruitment of medical interpreters and the rights of international patients. In relation to healthcare interpreter training programs, this study suggests that curriculum should be organized in a way that better reflects related factors, that rigorous entry and/or completion requirements should be adopted, and that training opportunities should be increased in number and scope.
Audio description in the digital age: Amateur describers, web technology and beyond

Audio description is an aural translation of a filmed performance or a live event for the benefit of blind and partially sighted (BPS) people. It entails multiple actors including describers (those writing and editing a script), voice actors (those reading the script at silence spots), and technicians (those responsible for sound recording). It is thus a laborious and complex translational process, and still remains nearly off-limits to sighted laypeople. Recently, however, there have been new attempts to popularise the production of audio description. Among them is YouDescribe, a free web-based platform for adding descriptions to YouTube videos. Creating descriptions in YouDescribe or ‘YouDescribing’ is similar in varying degrees to emerging fields of translation studies, such as ‘collaborative translation’, ‘volunteer translation’, ‘non-professional translation’, ‘community translation’, and ‘translation crowdsourcing’. More recently, a smartphone-based application for audio description has been developed in South Korea to allow describers to cooperate on a common project and improve the daily life of BPS people. These features have not been offered by traditional platforms, and constitute Audio Description 3.0, a new stage of development in audio description practice.

This paper discusses theoretical and practical aspects of feminist translation in South Korea by analyzing how an internationally acclaimed feminist book was translated into Korean. The texts under study are The Vagina Monologues (2007/10th Anniversary Edition), an episodic play written by Eve Ensler, and Pŏjainŏ Monollogŭ, a Korean translation by a feminist writer-cum-translator with an educational background in women’s studies. A comparative analysis of the two texts shows that the translator effectively conveys feminist messages, using traditional translation strategies (e.g. substitution, addition, borrowing, compensation), but in some instances she does not adequately communicate women’s experiences to the target readers. The findings suggest that translating a feminist book is and should be an act of activism, and that in a conservative culture like Korea, there should be a more intervenient role for feminist translators.

In recent decades the Korean pronoun geunyeo (commonly known cases. Against this background, the present study aims to compare two age groups with respect to their perceptions of geunyeo in different textual conditions. For this purpose, small-scale questionnaire surveys were conducted among 100 undergraduate students majoring in translation and 200 fifth-grade students at an elementary school. The respondents were asked to read four short texts and state their thoughts on whether instances of geunyeo appear natural.
판소리 번역에 관하여 : 마샬 필의 <심청가> 英譯에 나타난 唱을 기반으로

판소리는 17–18세기에 등장한 한국의 전통 ‘음악’으로, 소리꾼이 고수의 장단에 맞춰 소리, 아니리, 너름새/발림(몸짓) 등을 섞어 진행하는 솔로 오페라이다. 판소리는 1964년 대한민국 국가무형문화재 5호로 지정되었고, 2003년 11월에는 유네스코(UNESCO) 인류구전 및 무형유산으로 선정되었다. 하지만 국내외 번역학 분야에서 제대로 연구된 바가 없고, 한국학 분야에서조차도 번역과 관련해서는 연구가 매우 미흡한 주제이다. 이에 필자는 몇 안 되는 판소리 영역본 가운데 하나인 마샬 필(Marshall R. Pihl)의 “The Song of Shim Ch’ong”(원문: 판소리 다섯마당 가운데 하나인 심청가)를 분석하여, 번역자가 창(唱)이라는 노래 구절을 어떻게 재구성했는지를 살펴보고 그 함의를 논할 것이다. 주요 분석 영역으로는 (1) 불완전행 분절하기, (2) 모호한 표현 처리하기, (3) 형태적 등가 구성하기, (4) 명창 따라하기, (5) 재번역 등이 있다. P’ansori is a Korean music genre of epic storytelling that dates from the eighteenth century. It was designated as the National Intangible Cultural Property in 1964 and inscribed in UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2008. However, despite its standing as a national cultural symbol, p’ansori has not been a major research topic in translation studies. Against this backdrop, the present study analyzes the late Marshall R. Pihl’s “The Song of Shim Ch’ŏng” (the original: Shim Ch’ŏng ka), one of the few English translations of full p’ansori libretti, in order to show how he translated the sung passages called ch’ang. The analysis reveals several prosodic and stylistic features of translated ch’ang passages under the following headings: “Segmenting Hemistichs for Balanced Rhythm,” “Making Vague Phrases More Singable,” “Adjusting Idiomatic Expressions,” “Pursuing Formal Correspondence,” “Trimming Previous Translations,” “Incorporating a Master Singer’s Version,” and “Providing Visual Clues.” This article concludes with a summary of results and brief discussion of Pihl’s translation.
