Grinding System is very difficult to examine closely wear phenomenon or dynamic characterastic, because it is very complex and different from a general cutting system. Considering automatization and precision, it is very important to examine closely grinding system. In this study, grinding wheel surface is acquired by using computer vision system in order to explain wear and loading phenomenon. We investigate the relationship between wear and Fourier spectrum of acquired image, and observe the entropy variation in the process of manufacturing.

The grinding process plays a key role which decides the quality of a product finally. But the grinding process is very irregular, so it is very difficult to analyse the process accurately. Therefore it is very important in the aspect of precision and automation to reduce the idle time and to decide the proper dressing time by matching. In this study, we choose the method which can be observed directly by using of computer vision and then apply pattern classification technique to the method of measuring the wheel surface. Pattern classification technique is proper to analyse complicated surface image. We observe the change of the wheel surface by using of the gray level run length which are representative in this technique.

In computer vision system of modern industry, precise measuring has of dfficulties because of measurement error due to distortion phenomenon. Among the difficulties, the distortion of edge is regraded as a dominent problem, which is caused by the blurred image. The blurred image appears when camera can not discriminate its precise focus. So, it is very important to decide focus of lens and to develop algorithm in order to correct distortion phenomenon. Thus, discrimination criteria obtained by image information of precise focus must be fixed in advance. The gray level histogram of image acquired from blurred edge tends to show a uniform distribution. Bimodal intensity histogram is related with condition of focus, and it is possible to find good condition of focus by using bimodal histogram of entropy.

In this study, experiments were carried out to investigate the characteristics of grinding and wear process of diamond wheel during grinding ceramic materials. Normal component of grinding resistance was decreasing while increased of spindle speed. The resistance of vitrified bond wheel was less than that of resinoid bond wheel because of imbedded large holes on the surface of cutting edge. Surface roughness was decreasing while of spindle speed. The surface roughness using vitrified bond wheel was less than that of resinoid bond wheel because of small elastic deformation. After continuous grinding of ceramics, cutting edge ratio of resinoid bond wheel decreased. For the case of vitrified bond wheel, cutting edge ration did not change.
