This study indicated that although hexylene glycol decreased the dispersion of active metal because of its steric hindrance effect, it considerably enhanced the thermal stability of single alumina gel catalyst. This resulted in the remarkably larger pore volume and mesoporosity that was kept even after aging at about 1,000℃. In the case of binary alumina gel catalysts, Zrpromoted catalyst showed the best activity in the NO removal after both calcination and aging. While Ce and Zrpromoted catalyst were poorly resistant to SO_2 poisoning at the temperature range below their lightoff temperature, vanadium of Vpromoted catalyst was acted as a promoter rather than an inhibitor. In particular, Pd catalysts prepared by solgel method was remarkably resistant to SO_2 poisoning, in contrast to impregnated Pd catalysts. The optimal Pd catalyst, which was a multicomponent alumina gel catalyst promoted by V and Zr, was much more resistant to SO_2 than model Pt/Rh TWC and its thermal sintering never happened to 800℃. Moreover, it was equivalent to ceriasupported Pd catalyst in oxygen storage capacity. After all, this study suggested a possibility of the sol-gel method as a novel preparation method for which could substitute the conventional impregnation method that was very poor resistant to SO_2 poisoning in the preparation of Pdonly catalysts.
