Symeon Metaphrastes: A Romanticization of the Redacted Hagiographical Discourses

Vol.0 No.53

Symeon Metaphrastes represents the middle Byzantine period's cultural identity. The Macedonian dynasty of Byzantium marks the zenith and time of transition between internal and external crisis that engulfed the empire's outer frontiers, political stability, and cultural identity. To examine the elite's cultural taste for both remedying the stress from enduring this historical circumstance and reshaping their medieval identity, this study has examined two interesting choices that Symeon Metaphrastes made for engaging the audience. These texts are not intended to be entirely educational or doctrinal discussions on ideal Christian values. On the contrary, they appear to be deliberately constructed to be entertaining. The focus of this paper moves from analyzing Symeon Metaphastes's historical background, use of novelistic tropes, and to lastly utilization of homosexual relationship between different characters. This roadmap is set out to examine especially Symeon's use of romantic novelistic tropes (thus a theme of 'loveless romance') in medieval Byzantine redacted hagiography to bolster the sanctity of his protagonist and more strongly engage with his audience and readers. The ultimate goal here is to point out that the genre of Byzantine hagiography took a leap from limiting itself merely as providing lessons on idealized spiritual processes. And that this process was accelerated with the emergence of Symeon's redacted novelistic Christian novels.

The Myth of Autarkeia: Economic Concerns in Middle Byzantine Hagiography

Vol.- No.46

This paper examines the authorial agency in protecting and furthering the economic success of their monastic community in middle Byzantine period. The Lives of Theodore of Sykeon, Euthymios the Younger, Athanasios of Athos, the Miracula of the Zoodochos Pege, and the autobiographical account from the Monastic Rule of John Christodoulos of Patmos are selected to revisit our understanding of hagiographical narratives. These were evidently authored to interact with material economy of its mother society. Despite authoring the literary genre that should represent the Byzantine imagination of ideal spiritual virtues, hagiographers carefully structured the narrative to boldly protect their community and its future brethren. This paper illustrates the need for furthering our investigation of the authorial role in making individual sanctity, flourishing the protagonist's cult, and the locus sanctus.

Historical Origin and Presence of Magicians in Mid-Late Byzantium (Eleventh to Fifteenth Century)

Vol.- No.75

This study illustrates the historical background of magicians during the mid-late Byzantine period and how their tradition continued from the classical Greco-Roman world with very few modifications to the empire’s end. Despite the lack of related research, the deep-rooted historical presence of magicians in Byzantium implies that the use of magic should be examined as a genuine and serious profession rather than as a category of religious social otherness. The users of magic in Byzantium clearly understood the meaning of associating themselves with demons and potential consequences of their choice. An investigation of occult as a historical subject is ought to be centred on examining historical issues around the self-conception of magicians, rather than what their society branded them with to ostracize and ultimately persecute them. In this study, I examine available historical evidence to illustrate historical origin of magicians as a profession in the pre-Byzantine Mediterranean world and its unchanging continuation till the empire’s demise, scarce but vivid presence of magicians in Byzantine texts, and lastly, magical incantations and their historical continuity. Through this process, I highlight how the users of magic in Byzantium achieved their credentials as magicians, justified their actions as being within the borders of acceptable Orthodox Christian tradition, and met with notable successes or utter failures.

본 연구는 중국 e스포츠 산업의 발전 과정을 체계적으로 고찰하고, 그 배경의 이론적 토대를 제공하는 데 의의를 둔다. eSports is a rapidly growing global digital sports industry. In particular, China has become the largest eSports industry in the world. In order to understand the process and background of this rapid growth of eSports in China, this study examines first, the history of gaming in China, second, the development process of eSports in China, and third, the background of eSports development in China based on the Diffusion of Innovations Theory. This study found two major factors of the growth of Chinese eSports: communication channels (various gaming platforms and streaming services led by technology giant Tencent) and a state-led social system. This study contributes to examine the overall process of China's eSports growth and provides a theoretical framework of the development of Chinese eSprots.

New record of two marine synchaetid rotifers (Monogononta: Synchaeta) from Korea

2022 Journal of species research Vol.11 No.3

In this study, we identified two marine synchaetid rotifers, Synchaeta grimpei Remane, 1929 and S. vorax Rousselet, 1902, in Korea, which are the first synchaetid rotifers collected from a marine environment in the country. Prior to this study, all six synchaetids recorded in Korea were collected from freshwater environments. The morphological characteristics of both species are consistent with those recorded in previous studies of each species. Synchaeta grimpei is distinguished from other synchaetid rotifers by its cone-shaped body, wide and flat apical field, indistinct auricles, and long foot with two separated small toes. The morphological characteristics of Korean S. vorax specimens were most similar to the original description of Rousselet (1902), with its slender and cylindrical trunk shape, strongly convex apical field, and short foot with two small, separated toes. The rami of the Korean S. vorax specimen contained one frontal hook and several distinct and large teeth. Here, we provide the morphological diagnoses of the two synchaetid rotifers and the sequences of the partial mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) of the two species.

New record of three monogononts (Rotifera: Monogononta) from islands of Korea

2023 Journal of species research Vol.12 No.2

Three newly recorded rotifers were collected through surveys of several islands in Korea: Lecane perplexa (Ahlstrom, 1938); Lindia torulosa Dujardin, 1841; and Monommata maculata Harring & Myers, 1930. These species represent 24th, second, and third records of each genus discovered in Korea, respectively. Lecane perplexa and Monommata maculata, were collected from reservoirs using plankton nets, whereas Lindia torulosa was collected from a soil sample. The morphological characteristics of the discovered species are as follows: Lecane perplexa is characterized by a straight or slightly concave anterior margin of the lorica, an incomplete transverse fold on the ventral lorica, and a single toe with pseudoclaws and accessory claws; Lindia torulosa has an illoricated and vermiform body, a head with rostrum, a pair of auricles, cardate type trophi, and distinctively shaped epipharynx components; and Monommata maculata is characterized by long toes, an inner margin of rami with 10-12 serrated teeth, 3-4 large teeth, and interlocking teeth. Here, the morphological characteristics of the three Korean monogonont rotifers, which include trophi photographs, are presented. In addition, partial sequences of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) of each species are presented.

Penning Entertainment in Holy Stories: Humour and Horror in Middle Byzantine Hagiography

Vol.- No.78

At a glance, having scenes in the genre of hagiography that elude humour and suspense seem unnecessary. For those who imagine this genre to be only of strict medieval Orthodox values would even worry that having such literary motifs could hinder the story’s seriousness and gravitas. Having said that, it is very true that the expected readership for this genre would not specifically look for these motifs. Yet, having this naïve assumption can overlook the fact that authorial use of humour and suspense is vividly present in this genre and thus, when employed adequately, it can effectively catch the audience off-guard. In order to investigate these issues further, a number of key texts from the middle Byzantine period (from the ninth to eleventh century) are chosen. As this period is referred to as the cultural golden age of the empire, a great number of excellent examples were produced. Their authors tried to embroider educational, religious, and means of entertainment to embellish their creation. This study’s thorough examination of authorial techniques within the selected texts will provide a more precise survey of the cultural landscape and consumption culture of hagiographical discourse during this distant and unfamiliar time period.

One Author and Two Stories: Writing and Using the Life of Theodore of Sykeon

Vol.- No.50

This study examines the seventh century Life of Theodore of Sykeon, who was mostly active in the rural areas, such as Galatia, of the Byzantine Anatolia. George Eleusios, wrote the Life of his teacher and saint twice: the first version when he was a young man and the much lengthier second version after he had become the new hegoumenos of the Sykeon monastery. Unlike our contemporary publishing industry, this was an unusual activity in the traditional convention of authoring Byzantine hagiography. This study of mine attempts to explain what motivated George to embark on his projects by examining the two versions of Theodore’s Life, historical background surrounding the cult of Theodore, and the authorial goal of George: to save the dying cult by using his text as an advertisement method to the pilgrimage market. However, unfortunately, there is no pre-existing earlier studies that had been conducted on this subject. Thus, the research had to be undertaken by analyzing the original manuscript tradition and scarcely remaining relevant yet detached secondary studies. To circumvent this problem and support the polemical claim this study makes, I first illustrated the historical background of Theodore’s life, manuscript tradition of his surviving two versions of the Life, and the difference between these texts that further explains the authorial intention, which was not entirely spiritual.
